Aaliyah, easily.
She's no more talented than the Ciara, Cassie, Rihanna's of today. People hype her up to be this exquisite "artist"...how? She didn't contribute ANYTHING to her music....no writing, production, vocal arranging, etc. She sang what was handed to her. If you loved her music, thank her producers and writers. #2 People say she was on the verge of blowing up....ummm what indicated that? The album was flopping and "We Need a Resolution" didn't even hit the Top 50. The hype posthumously couldn't even send "Rock the Boat" in the Top 10 & "More Than A Woman" did even worse by not entering the Top 20. At the end of the day, it only scanned 2 million. She was NOT that popular, she was NOT the it-girl, and all you fools who continue to say that Beyonce would not be popular if it were not for Aaliyah's death are just that....fools.

But Aaliyah may have taken some of Beyonce's acting roles. But other than that, you're right.

^Yes he is.
But around here, I would have to say Aaliyah. She actually has one of the weakest voices I've ever heard. Cassie could talk through her songs just as well.

seriously? ^ have you listened to any of Aaliyah's albums? Cassie would NEVER be able to pull off "I Care 4 U" , "Never No More", "One In A Million" i don't even need to go on yes she's overrated but people need to stop with the shade and demoting her to likes of Cassie & Rihanna, the former can't sing at all, and the latter can barely sing & stay in pitch half the time, and again Elvis is the most overrated artist of all time.

I agree. I think Aaliyah was overrated after her death because it was so untimely, but to say she was on the level as Rihanna and Cassie is laughable. "I Care 4 U" had to be Aaliyah's flawless vocal. Cassie, Ciara and Rihanna could have never pulled it off. That's for damn sure.

Seeing that people can claim Elvis to be more overrated than Michael Jackson baffles me. ??? MJ actually wrote and produced music, Elvis was a puppet that had no hand in writing or producing anything he recorded. MJ was a better dancer. The only thing Elvis had above MJ was vocals.

Just because MJ wrote and produced his music doesn't make it any better than Elvis', but of course that's just personal preference. Sure, MJ could dance, but he could never effortlessly move from genre to genre and sing the way Elvis did. Elvis was a hell of a lot more likable and charismatic too, and reached out to a slew of audiences. That's why he has so many fans, because his music struck a chord with so many people.

I don't even think Michael should qualify here. Michael had just as much acclaim and hype before his death as after. Sure, a lot of bandwagoners came forth despite all the negative publicity, but he was still viewed as the 'King of Pop' BEFORE he died. His acclaim was already there. These other artists didn't really have that much support before they died. They garnered most of it after they died.

Michael did Pop, R&B, Gospel, Rock and a few other genres. "R&B" and "Gospel" are interchangeable enough to be categorized together, and he didn't make "rock" records, he incorporated rock music into his records. There's a huge difference, and to compare Michael's "genre-switching" to Elvis Presley's is laughable being Elvis could sing anything and sound great, and he did just that.

Elvis was only huge in two markets, the US and UK. Elsewhere his success was middle of the road to middling. Beyond individual talent Elvis *did* merely take black music and water it down for white people. He lifted everything from everyone from Chuck Berry to Little Richard. He may have done many genres but his career took off on the backs of artists that had no chance at huge mainstream success.

Beyond individual talent Elvis *did* merely take black music and water it down for white people. He lifted everything from everyone from Chuck Berry to Little Richard. He may have done many genres but his career took off on the backs of artists that had no chance at huge mainstream success. I never said that he had more fans than Michael Jackson. (Even though I do feel that is arguable being there's no way to measure the amount of fans he had at his peak to the amount of fans Michael had at his being they were artists of two completely separate eras, but I digress.) Also, it's not like Elvis jacked this music looking to cash in. He always loved R&B/Soul/Gospel music and had been heavily influenced by the Memphis gospel scene and "race records" and such since he was a teenager. It's not like he was malicious and stole the music from black people, because he didn't. Black and white people loved him. In fact, black people liked him a little more than white people did at one point. It wasn't Elvis that took the "black music" and watered it down, either. It was his label. Saying that, this is a fantastic Wikipedia (I know Wikipedia is a sloppy mess, but the Elvis page is actually quite excellent) excerpt talking about the watering down of R&B music.

Same with Selena, she was the biggest female in the latin music industry before her death, she'd set countless records in the year before her death, most of her records were set with her last release while alive Amor Prohibido. But, she did achieve her crossover success posthumously, but obviously her CD wasn't finished to crossover yet, so she never had a pop at the market anyway. Plus, it's not like she was an unknown in America, as she'd already had spanish albums charting on the Billboard 200, going platinum in the United States.

Shaking my head at people saying Elvis Presley. Ya'll need to educate yourselves on what he did for music. Elvis is the Hulk Hogan of music. We can discuss what Hulk did for the wrestling business, or we can discuss how good a wrestler he actually was. The 2 are not the same thing.
