Who is it?
I have to give it to Selena. I always hear "omg she was uhmaaaaasing, and her inglesh cd wuda been crak" but, how do we know it wasn't destined to flop. Plus, at least we didn't lose the real national treasure Shakira. THAT would've been sad.
What do you think?

And please don't ever mention Shakira in the same sentence as the word "lose" ever again. :'(

I don't even care about Selena. Michael Jackson however, an artist I like, only released 2 worthy albums. Yet strangely he has been crowned God of music.
Fucken, just don't vote for Kurt and Aaliyah.

Care to explain? The man never co-wrote or co-produced a single track yet he's put on the highest of pedestals.

What about Biggie? He was bigger dead than when he was alive. Or Janis Joplin who only had one top 40 hit (which went #1)

Care to explain? The man never co-wrote or co-produced a single track yet he's put on the highest of pedestals. He was responsible for bringing "sexuality" to music. And he was one of the very first performers.

Selena? Seriously?
She had 6 #1 hits on the latin equivalent to the Hot 100 in the year before her death, none of your favorites could pull that off, on that chart, nor the Hot 100. If it wasn't for her death People En Espanol wouldn't have even been created (at least for a few years). People magazine featured her on the cover, it sold out so many publications that they saw the obvious interest in a People En Espanol, and it was started.
She had been attempting to start the crossover album since 1991/2, but due to her massive success in the hispanic market, she kept having to put it off repeatedly. Then shortly before her death, she had a break and her label begin pairing her with top producers/songwriters in preparation for her album. She had a recording session scheduled the morning of March 31st, but after receiving calls from her former boutique manager Yolanda, who claimed she was raped and beat up Selena put off the recording, so she could take her to the hospital and receive the tax documents, the pig kept trying to hold over her head. As fate would have it, Selena never ended up in the recording studio that morning.
Selena was the first artist even signed to EMI Latin/Capitol EMI. They had everything invested in her crossover success. She only fully recorded four songs for the English album: Dreaming of You, I Could Fall In Love, I'm Getting Used To You, and Captive Heart...the other tracks were previous cuts. Who knows if those four tracks would have even made the final cut.
I find it hard to understand how she was overrated after her death, when she was dominating the market with Amor Prohibido, the latin music industries brightest, rising star was murdered. She wasn't a washed up has been, she was at her peak when she was killed. Please do some research on her impact and all the records she broke even before her death before generalizing Selena with this group.

She still had a huge fanbase in the Spanish speaking market. How can you compare Selena and Shakira? I mean really? Are you implying it's not sad that Selena died, because we didn't lose Shakira? Remember that Shakira is the one still paying tribute to Selena in her interviews, and covering her songs. The last two sentences make me want to vomit. Selena not only had the credibility, talent, and vocals but she had an incredible personality. She was destined for huge things, there's no point in arguing it because we can't argue it either way, some dumb fat bitch decided to intentionally kill Selena because she fired her, she was so in love with Selena and couldn't stand the rejection.

On this board, it's Aaliyah & Selena (shocking - the 2 female artists). Overall, I say Kurt Cobain.

Or Janis Joplin who only had one top 40 hit (which went #1) OH MY GOD. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? Did you say that Janis Joplin is the most undeservedly overrated artist after her death because she only had one #1 on Billboard? I am embarrassed and ashamed for you and anyone who taught you music history during your schooling.

"Bad" and "Dangerous" contained essential songs, definitely, but both of those albums along with the rest of his output were spotty. He was a massive star of proportions we probably won't see again, but was he the musical genius the media would have us believe? No not quite I think. In fact a lot of his idiosyncrasies as a performer AND singer fail under inspection. Luv him though.

I don't really see where the filler is on HIStory either. Maybe in Money and D.S.? Yet even though they may not be up to par with an Earth Song, HIStory, You Are Not Alone, Scream doesn't mean they're complete crap. Additionally, his first recordings with Motwon, Got To Be There, Ben, Music & Me, Forever Michael are all strong. Don't be one of those fans that think his career began in 1979. The only weak link is perhaps Invincible despite the fact that it contains keepers as well.

Probably Kurt Cobain. I appreciate Nirvana's work but they were not one of my absolute favorites during the '90's alt-rock era. I would say that the others are all only marginally more popular post-death.

She can have all the success in the world, doesn't mean she was good at what she did. THAT'S what I mean by overrated. People seem to forget her limited talent because she was successful.

How was her talent limited? Just cause she didn't have a huge range like MiMi and Celine and Carrie? I'm not trying to undermine her vocals though, some of her ballads are chlling, especially Tu Solo Tu. She was versatile enough, going from Si Una Vez to Techno Cumbia, and her ability to create her own choreography and pull it off effortlessly. She didn't even speak a line of Spanish when she had her first #1 with a 100% Spanish song. So, who in the hell knows how far she would have gone in her native language (English), also the language she was far more comfortable writing in.
