Maybe I'm a little ignorant to Elvis' contribution to multiple genres, but which genres did he have an equal impact in?

Maybe I'm a little ignorant to Elvis' contribution to multiple genres, but which genres did he have an equal impact in? He is the undisputed King of Rock n Roll as we all know, but he was also a "major player" in pop music, country music, and gospel music. As stated, Presley was one of the first white artists to bring R&B music to the mainstreams in terms of white people accepting it. Adults and parents hated it and deemed it "satanic" while the youth loved it and couldn't get enough, which is when that whole 50s rock era begun. He was a man that both white and black people could love, and they did. A slew of his holiday songs are also considered Christmas classics. He catered to almost everything and everyone. I can't think of a genre he didn't fit into back then other than jazz/broadway/classical, but what mainstream artist really did? His television special 'Aloha from Hawaii' is estimated to have reached 1 billion people worldwide, which for sake of argument, was approximately the same amount of viewers who watched Michael Jackson's funeral service.

If he did all of this, then he deserves all the credit he gets dead or alive. But then again, I kinda understand why some people would think he was overrated, considering there is talk about him stealing credits from black artists or something of that nature. The Beatles was accused of the same thing (I think).

Seriously I don't see how these artist are overrated when they were racking up critical acclaim before their death: Elvis Presley Michael Jackson Johny Cash Definitely overrated: Aaliyah Selena Kurt Cobain to an extent I really do not understand how Selena was overrated, she was murdered in the process of her long awaited crossover album. She was the Madonna to the latin music industry at the time of her death, her career was reaching heights never before seen in that industry. People tend to forget, Selena spoke English way before she spoke Spanish, she covered popular English songs in her concerts frequently. She may seem overrated because her album was such a success posthumously, but it would have been irregardless, she had top notch producers/writers set in place, her label was investing everything into her. She was poised to become bigger than Shakira or any other crossover artist you want to compare her to. Her record label signed her because he thought he'd discovered the next Gloria Estefan, except with more mainstream appeal. Selena's success isn't her being overrated, it was what was going to inevitably happen with her English CD, whether it was completed or not, it was going to be a huge.

Actually read that if you really thing Selena is overrated, it's Billboard magazine from September 1995. "By dint of Selena's unparalleled commercial prosperity, this Lake Jackson, Tex. native has set the standard that recording artists in the Latino market can aspire to. Further, Selena's success opened the eyes of U.S. retail chains to the potential of Latino music, as well as piqued the interested of Anglo music fans to Latino sounds." "Still for all her achievements and celebrity, what kind of lasting impact will Selena have on the Anglo masses who could barely pronounce the word "Tejano" earlier this year? The answer may lie in the upcoming film...if Holywood can make a tasteful blockbuster documenting the life of Selena, then the crossover stardom she do dearly coveted will be realized by many talented Latinos who will forever be in her debt. "Dreaming of You" was among the 10 best-selling debuts ever, along with being the best-selling debut by a female artist. Though its success was astonishing, the numbers rung up by "Dreaming of You" were hardly a fluke. Prior to that album's release, Selena had notched a platinum album, and two gold records. Then it just goes on to mention the other pile of records she's broken, before and after her death. That's all from Billboard magazine by the way.

Pleading your case for Selena over and over again won't change people's minds. All of this is a futile argument. But then again, that's pretty much what the polling booth is.

Definitely overrated: Kurt Cobain to an extent Can you try to explain how? Yes, my curiosity has been piqued as well. He's been misrepresented, if anything, but that is removed from the matter at hand.

I always refer to Presley as basically a pawn of the time. He admired the music he did and gave credit where credit was due yet he was the individual who received the most attention and acclaim because music was so oppressed in the 50s and 60s. Chuck Berry couldn't get the same type of deals Elvis could. Little Richard wouldn't be welcomed on the same tv programs as Elvis. Black artists so to speak had to go through the back door. Wasn't Presley's fault. This was the era. He just happened to be the white guy who was in the right place at the right time. It's sad because he often doesn't get the accolades he deserves in the black community for being so tremendously gifted (and he was). There have been a lot of slaps in his face over the years about him being racist, how he did nothing but steal, how he was this and that. But like I said, this was something that he couldn't help. He was a pawn. But the notion that he created, he discovered, he invented is pure baloney.
He was the marketable white guy performing negro music that the white kids loved and the white parents hated. Other than that and having a pretty voice his contributions are slim. That's the reality of the situation.

All except MJ really. He was an icon of epic proportions way before his death. All his death did was restore his reputation and solidify his legacy.
As for the others, they were all amazingly talented actually and each represented their own genres to the fullest extent. However, death lead to them being raised to another level which they had not really fully been on before death. (unlike MJ who had been this massive influence decades prior to his death) Kurt Cobain could also be argued as an exception and I'd probably be swayed to agree.

So many people in here have their facts wrong about Aaliyah it's not even funny. *rolls eyes*
anywho, I dont see anyone posthumous being overrated. I think the term overrated has been made so loosely. Last time I checked, overrated means someone that has alot of sucess, with very minimal talent. And this list, everyone was talented in their own right, especially MJ.

WTH is Selena...? Seriously!?! Do you mean, "Why is Selena included?" or you don't know who she is? ???
On another note, this topic's choices are too narrow, there are numerous other musical icons that could have been noted in this poll as being overrated themselves, instead of the 'other' choice.
