Diane Birch De-Clubs "What Is Love"March 08, 2010 9:23 EST You may know her as the singer-songwriter that opened for Nick Jonas and who is doing good things on the Independent Albums chart, but who knew that Diane Birch could take Haddaway's synthy, vintage '90s club music classic "What Is Love?" and turn it into a spare, heartbreaking soul ballad? Check out Birch's version, performed on a white Rhodes piano, is in this week's Mashup Monday. VIDEO"I think ['What Is Love'] is a beautiful song, and I don't think people would generally think of it in that way," Birch says of why she chose Haddaway's hit to perform. "That's a way that I appreciate covers is when I see [the song] in a completely different way. 'What is love / Baby don't hurt me.' It's the classic torment of love and of course I can relate to that emotion." For her part, Birch's 2009 debut album, "Bible Belt," recently climbed to No. 22 on the Alternative Albums chart. Meanwhile, Haddaway's "What Is Love" -- which was used to great comic effect in the 1998 Saturday Night Live movie, "A Night At The Roxbury" -- reached its chart zenith with a No. 9 performance on the Dance/Club Play chart back in 1993, when Birch was only ten years old.

I agree that it would as Bible Belt was easily one of my fave albums of the year. Such an unnoticed talent.

I hope she can get a nod or two this time around. She was submitted last year for most of the major categories (like Best New Artist and Best Pop Album) but was overlooked.

I'm surprised Valentino got the attention. I quite liked Nothing But A Miracle also.

Any word on any new music from her? Yes. Diane has a new EP entitled The Velveteen Age, featuring covers of some of her favorite songs. It came out on iTunes yesterday. REVISIT ‘THE VELVETEEN AGE’ WITH DIANE BIRCH & THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND Posted on 11-24-10 “Downright thrilling” (HuffPo) breakout singer/songwriter Diane Birch has teamed with fellow New Yorkers and “astronauts of progressive soul” (Guardian UK) the Phenomenal Handclap Band to record 'The Velveteen Age,’ a seven-track covers collection set for December 7 release on S-Curve Records. Revisiting the soundtrack to her musical efflorescence, Birch puts her own seductive spin on songs by The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees and others. ‘The Velveteen Age’ was produced by S-Curve’s Steve Greenberg and Phenomenal Handclap Band's Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, and mixed by Steve Greenwell. Birch contributed arrangements with Collas and Marquand, and played all keyboards. “During my teenage years as a Goth these songs were amongst my nearest and dearest,” says Birch, who appears in one of her vintage Victorian wedding dresses at age 16 in the photo on the EP cover. “Sitting in my bedroom with my headphones pressed into my ears till they hurt, each song gave me a weird kind of hope for my future. I would have never imagined I would get a chance to record them one day, let alone with some of my closest friends.” The daughter of a conservative pastor, Birch was only allowed to listen to church hymns growing up. She rebelled as a young teen by embracing Goth culture, attending her father's services in a floor-length black cape and vintage wedding dress, and listening to bands like Sisters of Mercy, Peter Murphy, and Echo & The Bunnymen. On ‘The Velveteen Age,’ Birch covers these and other artists with affection, exultation and a wicked backbeat courtesy of the members of the Phenomenal Handclap Band. 'The Velveteen Age' was recorded in Brooklyn, between songwriting sessions for Diane’s next album of original material. It follows her extraordinary debut album 'Bible Belt’ (S-Curve/2009), which opened in the Billboard Top 100 and earned glowing reviews from The New York Times, NPR, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and more. Birch toured extensively and made numerous television appearances supporting ‘Bible Belt,’ including The Today Show, Letterman, and Ellen. 'THE VELVETEEN' AGE TRACKLIST: This Corrosion (Sisters of Mercy) Kiss Them For Me (Siouxsie & The Banshees) Bring On The Dancing Horses (Echo & The Bunnymen) Atmosphere (Joy Division) Primary (The Cure) Tarantula (This Mortal Coil) A Strange Kind of Love (Peter Murphy) Diane Birch with The Phenomenal Handclap Band Produced by Steve Greenberg, Daniel Collás & Sean Marquand Arranged by Diane Birch, Daniel Collás & Sean Marquand Diane Birch - Vocals and Keyboards Luke Riverside - Guitar Pier Pappalardo - Bass Patrick Wood - Drums Quinn Luke & Patrick Wood - Backing vocals

She just performed on Holland' most famous TV show 'The Voice Of Holland'. Was really surprised at how amazing her voice is.
