Next album, I want Carrie to stick with the Country writers. Something tells me will get a more light-hearted Carrie next go-around. I'm looking forward to that. Something tells me Carrie's next album won't be out until she's about 30. :'(

At :40 into this video of Quitter it almost looks like she starts to do the Carlton dance and stops herself. Made me smile.

After a long day at work, I'm back home and just wanted to write a succinct review from last night's show in Bridgeport, CT. I'm not sure where to start because I am still on a bit of a high after seeing such an unbelievably talented and gifted vocalist at her personal peak as an entertainer.
My how our little country girl from Idol has grown. I was a only mild fan of Carrie's from Idol but in the past 3 years or so have become more than just a fan. Seeing her last night at my third Carrie show really opened my eyes to her personal growth. When I first saw her, she was stiff on stage, almost as if she was shy with her own crowd that paid to see her. Last night, she took to the stage like a polished veteran entertainer. Yes, the big production (stunning visual backdrops, flying truck concept, swings, 'Casanova' couch) is MUCH bigger in person than in those youtube videos, but what also pales in those videos compared to real life is her voice, especially as close as I was in the third row.
Only a few vocalists have been able to truly "touch" me live (as cheesy as that probably reads) because they have something in their voice that captures my interest and subconsciously makes me concentrate on every lyric with 100% attention. I can honestly say that after last night's experience, Carrie is now one of them.
While I have said this so many times, I truly believe Carrie will become one of country's legendary ladies alongside gals like Patsy, Dolly, Reba, Faith, Shania. Carrie's ability to control such a large stage with a fabulous backing band and backing vocalists with such ease (something I never consistently saw in her at my last two concert experiences) tells me that she must be at extreme comfort with herself on stage and with her audience. She knows that she is not bigger than her name but doesn't downplay herself either. She appears to truly be comfortable with her craft and seems to be at her happiest and now her best.
Vocally, I loved every song, including the duets, except that '9-to-5' cover (the arrangement and vocals were just meh for me) and 'Mama's Song'. Her standouts were 'Wasted' (one of my favourite songs by any artists last decade from any any genre), 'Cheats', 'Temporary Home' (the recorded version is a tad cheesy but the live version is just SO powerful in person), 'Undo It' (another song, which I don't care too much for on the record but is so BIG live), 'Songs Like These' (brilliant closer), 'Just A Dream' (my second favourite Carrie song ever), and 'Change'.
I'm sorry, this review was supposed to be "succinct", lol, so I'll end it now. I really hope Carrie has a second leg this fall that stops closer to me in NYC, but regardless I will definitely find a way to see her again later this year.

Thanx for your review Neally! I felt the same way after her show-- on a high!
I still think Carrie will book a venue in NYC this fall, hopefully, because she hasn't really done many big cities yet except Vegas and maybe Indianapolis. Ie- She hasn't done NYC, Boston, Toronto, Washington DC, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, LA (hollywood bowl likely counts for the Fall?), Denver, Cleveland, Buffalo, Houston, etc.
I keep thinking that maybe they booked smaller cities for the first leg of the tour to get the buzz of her show going....With all the good reviews and buzz for this tour, maybe the Fall leg will book bigger cities?

Wow I am even more convinced now that Jim malec of the 9513 is Scott borchetta in disguise. According to the byline, this 9513 review was written by Juli Thanki, not Jim Malec. That the writer considers "Temporary Home" evidence that Carrie is a "pretty good songwriter" should have been a tipoff that it isn't Malec. Interesting discussion on "Mama's Song." The lyrics don't bug me nearly as much as they should, so I guess leilamaurizia's comments from today apply for me, as well. beneficial is absolutely right that the lyrics suffer from a lack of specificity (something that is characteristic of most Kara DioGuardi co-writes). But in this case, Carrie's voice fills in the necessary emotional blanks (at least as far as I'm concerned). For all of its inelegance, the song feels to me like something a young woman would say to her mom, just a pure, so-bursting-with-emotion-that-she-doesn't-have-the-words statement of faith in the man she has chosen (or that she really is putting her life in the hands of God, I suppose -- lyrichord, I think that interpretation still kind of works with that last verse, because I guess the young woman would be hoping that her kid will discover God in his/her own way? I concede that the more obvious interpretation fits better, as you say). "Undo It" as the next single? My choice would be "Songs Like This," and there really isn't another uptempo song on Play On for which I could muster much enthusiasm as a single. "Undo It" is, for me, an example of a frustrating Carrie co-write (well, frustrating is overstating it, but it feels like song potential squandered) -- it is in the same category as "All-American Girl" in that regard. Both songs have very catchy, engaging melodies but don't quite deliver on a good kernel of an idea. The chorus-bridge and bridge-to-tag-chorus transitions in the song are quite jagged, and I've already voiced my objections (as have several others) to the production in the chorus. The verses sound terrific, but the lyrics in the verses aren't quite sharp enough. I don't mind the lyrics in the chorus at all, though, I think there's a sort of colloquial bluesy punch to "You took my happy." In the end, I don't dislike it, but the song does leave me with a few "What if?"s. I also think "Undo It" is a good singalong song on a subject that will resonate with many women. And I wouldn't be surprised to see it released. After all, Jason Aldean is the hottest act on country radio with a similar country-meets-Southern-rock-meets-blues sound, and, as Typo pointed out in the Country forum a while back, "Undo It" is in a similar sonic space to Blake Shelton's current #1, "Hillbilly Bone." Where "Undo It" differs from Jason and Blake's songs is, of course, in not relying on the typical redneck tropes (thank goodness), and the production in "Undo It"'s chorus does go farther than Jason and Blake's have ( so unnecessary to take the raw out of Carrie's voice on this one!). But I want to go back to beneficial's excellent point about Carrie's writing collaborations. In the absence of the kind of inspiration that drove "Temporary Home," I agree that Carrie needs co-writers with the wherewithal to push her. I find myself listening to a song like "Undo It," "All-American Girl" or "Play On" and wishing that someone had said to Carrie, "OK, this is a very good draft. Now, let's tighten the lyrics up a bit and really give them some narrative and emotional punch." With these songs, it feels to me like Carrie is just a step away from getting it right -- so close! It would just take a few well-placed details to serve as hooks. "Unapologize" has pretty much the opposite issue -- some compelling lyrical moments sandbagged by a mediocre melody. "Temporary Home" and "What Can I Say" (and, for that matter, "Last Name," "Crazy Dreams" and "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore") established pretty well for me that Carrie brings enough to the table as a writer for that to be something worth further exploration. I like her topical breadth, and even when Carrie is writing about relationships, she seems pretty good at honing in on an emotional angle that hasn't been overdone. But going forward, I do hope that she challenges herself with writers who can help her craft better narratives and to find more vivid language in which to express her ideas. I think Carrie is more likely to find those writers in country music. That's not to say that she can't bring writers from other genres into the mix, but I think she needs better lyricists than Kara DioGuardi if she does. I did get around to watching Carrie's "9 to 5" from her concert in...Portland, I think? I enjoyed it -- her voice sounds terrific. It isn't a song that I expected Carrie to take to easily, but she seemed to do so pretty naturally. ETA: robrt30, thanks so much for your comments on venue acoustics and the sound mix. I would love to hear more from you on the subject after your next show.Regarding the ambiguity or lack of specificity in Mama's song. It was intentional. I believe in the YouTube video that was posted where Carrie spoke about the song, she said that the song was left vague on purpose in order to have the song apply not only to a future husband. She said that the idea of the marriage might be the overwhelming concept that people might take from the song, but the lyrics could apply to a mom driving her daughter to university where the daughter is on her first steps of independence and the mom is basically giving her daughter away to God.

I'm SO happy "Undo It" is the next single. It's my favorite off the album. The choice however seems kinda predictable considering "Before He Cheats" was the 3rd single off of "Some Hearts" & "Last Name" was the 3rd single off of "Carnival Ride," but I'm still uber excited. I don't much like "Temporary Home," so I'm glad they've finally chosen the next single.
Quick Question - I haven't visited this thread in a while, & I'm going to her concert on May 21st, can anyone please post the setlist?

Should cross 1.5 mil scanned within the coming months. With Idol, ACMs, CMAs, Brooks and Dunn special, etc. coming up, she should be probably to about 1.7 by the end of summer. Maybe higher.

So cute on the Insider. They asked if she would change her name to Carrie Fisher when she gets married. She laughed and said that she would legally change it to Fisher, but probably keep her stage name as Carrie Underwood. Wasn't Carrie Fisher Princess Lea in Star Wars?

I'm sorry, but I just don't get why there's no love for "Undo It"!!! Personally, It was my top favorite song instantly when I first heard PO. It is catchy, actually very catchy, fun to sing, and overall well-written! It is perfect for a summer-single, and has huge potential to be a crossover-hit like BHC. The clip on iTunes sounds Amazing (for it is in the climax of the song), and I actually can't wait for it to sky rocket off the charts.
Why is everyone not liking it? When the album was first released, I knew right away UI would be a single. The one song I'm not to fond about is TH being a single. Sorry, but I just don't think it was the right choice-- I haven't heard it once on the radio.
CC was cut short from Carrie's record label, and TH is moving very slowly up the charts. (And I know part of that is to blame the people in front of her. Actually, the charts are almost a joke now... everyone gets to number one now- they just wait in line for their turn=[)
Anyhow, I think Carrie's label is making the best choice for a summer-single. It will be great, just watch. =)
I'm sure I going to get some feedback from this post =). Just my thoughts!

I'll put in a little love for Undo It. I enjoy it, but I disagree with you about TH. The more I hear it the more I love it. But I'll have to say I crank up Undo It everytime.

Don't get me wrong, I like "Undo It" a lot too, just can't listen to it without wanting to strangle Mark Bright for messing with Carrie's voice in the chorus.

It doesn't bother me, but I could see why some people aren't crazy about it. I love the song, but I do think it would be better if the chorus wasn't so over-produced. It's too bad, because the album overall is much less produced than CR and SH were, but this one song, they shouldn't have messed with Carrie's voice on the chorus. Carrie's voice should never be messed with. Like I said, though, it doesn't bother me, and I can definitely see Undo It being a huge hit for Carrie.

On top of that I actually still think the transition from the chorus into the 2nd verse is really awkward.
My favorite part is when it's just Carrie's voice and the drumbeat.

Just wanted to tell you all that Jessica Harp's new album came out this week. (Remember her? She was in The Wreckers with Michelle Branch)
Anyways, the last song on the album, track 11 'Good Enough For Me' was written by Luke Laird, Carrie Underwood and Hilary Lindsey. Cool to see Carrie's co-writes getting around!
I just thought I'd let y'all know in case you want to check it out. The rest of the album is really good too, I'd highly recommend it!
