Anyone think that Taylor will have an off year and Kanye will be back with a bang? It seems to me that people are more annoyed that she hasn't let it go after a year and feel bad for Kanye... almost. I dunno.Putting stanning aside,I genuinely felt that though the performance was off-key at times, the genius of the song shone through regardless. Whether people felt she was milking it for publicity and despite off-key moments, the song was genuinely great and the type of song that will convince neutrals to want to check out the album and maybe even buy it. Before this performance,I was a little concerned about Speak Now's potential sales. Now,after hearing the new song AND if the entire album is as consistently good as Innocent, not so much. This article sums up my thoughts well : Taylor Swift's New Song Stuns At VMAsTaylor Swift is used to getting massive ovations from stadiums full of fans, and indeed when she was introduced at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, that's exactly the sort of treatment she got from the live crowd. But by the time she got through her new song (which may or may not be called "Innocent" or "Forgiveness"), the audience was mostly overcome with stunned silence. But she shouldn't consider that a bad thing — rather, it was the best response she could have hoped for considering how intense and passionate the song was. Swift began the number seated in an arm chair and strumming an acoustic guitar while footage from her acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs played on a small television next to her. The tune started out spare and desolate, perhaps darker than anything she has ever recorded. It had a real gritty, dirty, unsettling country feel to it — not a sound that she is accustomed to creating, but certainly one that she grew up listening to. The song built slowly, like a quiet storm, and by the time she got up from the chair and took command of the stage herself, it was a full-blown monsoon. Swift has rarely looked this committed to a performance at an awards show, and she wore it with a staggering amount of maturity and grace. Indeed, it didn't seem like Swift could become any bigger, but if this is what we can expect from Speak Now, then her star will continue to rise in ways she never thought possible.Whether it's specifically about Kanye West or not, the song remains an important step in Swift's evolution and could point to bigger, more complex themes for her future work. She may enjoy the screams of adoration, but tonight she learned that silence can be golden too. newsroom.mtv.com/2010/09/13/taylor-swift-vma-2010/

2. Hey Pink! Lorena at 925-405-2300 is a fan. A big fan. The kind of fan to have an airplane with a banner circle over downtown Los Angeles for hours before the VMAs started. The banner read: "Pink U R It Tour USA Again" and then gave her name and phone number.

Deadmau5 told Billboard on the red carpet that he doesn't own a TV, so this really is his first VMAs.

I really think so. Public opinion is shifting towards Kanye and I think Taylor's team thought the song would be a great pr move but it backfired. The fact that her performances aren't living up to the hype she's getting isn't helping either.

LA TIMES REVIEW of last night: QUOTE: Taylor Swift, "Stealing Innocence" (New song, and that's the believed title.)Sparkly guitar? Gone. This is T-Swift all grown up. Her new ballad, which may or may not be about Kanye West, doesn't leave much to the imagination. The performance begins with a clip of West interrupting Swift at last year's VMAs. Look, West's move was a boneheaded one, but it was also tragically overblown. Swift is no damsel -- she’s an international recording star who's selling out arenas -- and if MTV can't take its own awards seriously (see Chelsea Handler), why be shocked when the artists don't? Regardless, Swift would have been better to ignore the moment at the 2010 edition. She also would have been better off not writing this song. "Lost your balance on a tightrope," she thinly sings (bet it sounds perfect on record), her somber eyes letting you know she understands, she really does. "Life is a tough road / 32 and still growing up," the suddenly mature Swift sings. For celeb watchers, West just turned 33. "You're still an innocent," the 20-year-old Swift concludes in the chorus of this embarrassingly self-important ballad. So Swift can dispense advice and bestow forgiveness, but she still has a ways to go as an artist. Grade: D nail - head - perfect

Didn't watch the show this year. I'm sure I didn't miss anything. This show isn't geared much anymore for anyone over 25.

People were silent because they didn't know what to make of the song and/or performance.

MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday averaged 11.4 million viewers, that’s the most since 2002′s 11.9 million, and the most ever for a Sunday night telecast of the show. It was also the third most watched telecast in MTV history.

hard to believe 2000 didn't get over 10 million viewers... that one still hasn't been topped (in my opinion) in my years of watching the vmas since '99! :o

It;s funny how known of the diva's performed(Bey, GaGa, Kelly, Brit, ect--minus RiRi's small not promoted bit)and yet they did HUGE in the ratings. Hmmm....
I think alot of it had to do with how great and controversial last years VMA's were. With Kanye and Taylor's feud and such, people missed out on something great so I'm sure people were tuning in to see if anything great would happen.

I think more merit should be awarded to the host each year for bringing in the viewers. Chelsea is red-hot career-wise right now and was an unusually inspiring choice of host.
If Russell Brand hosted again I think I would stab my ears with an ice pick. Poor Katy... :(

Why were the ratings in 2002 so high? What was going on that year? I don't think Chelsea Handler was responsibile for the ratings. Everyone turned in because Taylor and Kanye were both on. Next year, if Chelsea hosts again the ratings won't touch this year (unless something else wild is going on). The ratings are a tribute to how awesome the 2009 VMAs were.

www.eonline.com/uberblog/the_awful_truth/b200048_taylor_swift-kanye_west_duet_never_was.htmlThe Taylor Swift-Kanye West Duet That Never WasToday 8:54 AM PDT If you thought Taylor Swift's performance at last night's MTV Video Music Awards—in which she replayed Kanye West stage-jacking from last year then crooned about how he's still growing but remains innocent…uh, we think—was a tad uncomfy, you're not the only one. Certain MTV execs were not pleased with Ms. Swift's performance—or lack-there-of, as it might be. Not only did her appearance leave some viewers scratching their heads, but Tay also shied away from a proposed duet between the two superstars—according to impeccable MTV sources. Keep in mind this was never an official duet planned by the hip network, but, merely one several key MTV players were very much pushing for. For the record, MTV was gaga on everything Taylor. Certainly its president, Van Toffler, who said, "There was never a plan for Taylor Swift and Kayne to perform together and we were absolutely thrilled with her performance." Also, Swift's reps claim likewise—that there was never any kind of a request or a push for such a joint performance. Which is unlike what other uber-inside MTV sources are telling us. But, alas, that's what a goss column's for, right? Before we get to rest of the good dirt, trust us, folks in the Nokia Theatre, where the VMAs were held, were just as confused listening to T.Swift—wandering around her bizarre broken down home set sans shoes and singing a little ditty that everyone knew was addressed to the Kanye—as we're sure you viewers at home were. "The house is dead! The house is dead!" An überpowerful source that helped plan the night cried as Tay slowly walked back across stage after her performance to silence from the stunned crowd. And not stunned in a good way, that's for sure. The whole performance was over-the-top melodramic—Taylor's signature style, natch—for an incident that, in retrospect, really wasn't a big deal. And from a gal who is supposedly totally over the whole ordeal, no less. Guess not, huh, Taylor? 'Cause if Tay put the incident in her past, then she'd be up to show there are no hard feelings by taking the stage with Mr. West himself, which everyone at MTV and Team Kanye thought would happen. Yep, despite what's been reported, a performance was proposed for Taylor to take the stage and help Kanye close the show, finally putting to rest the ordeal that everyone else is so dunzo with. The only person left to sign up for the onstage show of forgiveness (and, let's be honest, a huge press moment for both of the two, no doubt) was Taylor. And she reportedly took her sweet time deciding…Like the entire friggin' show. Apparently, Tay refused to go on with Kanye, and she had people from MTV, Camp Kanye and her own folks working on overdrive throughout the duration of the show to see if she'd change her mind. Guess she never did. "Well, she's a major-ass rising talent, girl's got her right, right?"

I would argue that when a show is so good one year that people are buzzed to watch the next year. It might be indicative of the 2001 VMAs and the great performances...people were more inclined to watch the next year. That and, however performs can add their fanbase too. I know I didn't watch because...while I like gaga I knew that it was going to be her winning and that would be the highlight. No performers...minus Usher were worth my time. Next year when Bey, Brit, Gaga, Nicki, Kelly, and others slay then it will be worth watching...a lot of people consider that when deciding to tune in.

i remember 2002's event was hyped to celebrate michael jackson's birthday, which he unforunately thought that a stage prop was a lifetime achievement award when britney called him "the greatest artist of all time".
