Hopefully the next album will have less filler and she'll take a few more risks -- particularly in what she releases to radio. I think she actually took a lot of risks concerning the singles choices this era, i.e., by releasing Temporary Home and, mainly, Mama's Song. If she wanted to play it safe, she would've released SWISLY or WCIS, which has been fan favorites since the release. I agree that MS was a big risk. I have actually come to like Mama's Song, I think it shows people that personal side of Carrie that we don't get to see much. At least not through her music. I do however, think that WCIS and SWISLY should have been and still should be singles. I wouldn't be mad at Carrie if she decided to 7 singles with this era, and released SWISLY next, then Quitter, then WCIS. But I know a lot of people are ready for a new album, and I am as well. I also can't get over the fact that CC and UI were never promoted at other formats. If she doesn't want to remix, then fine. But at least TRY to promote them at CHR/Hot AC/AC. The album would probably be 3x Platinum by now if they had done that.

If they don't want to promote at other formats, then I'm not sure why she is making songs like UI, to be honest.

That's true, but UI in particular just seemed to be a song that was made to "please" the pop fans, and if she doesn't want to cater to that audience (which is fine), I'm not sure why it was included.
That being said, it made it to #1 on country, so what do I know? lol

Close the era with WCIS and bring on Album #4 with "Oklahoma Wind" as the lead single please. Get those country critics on your side Carrie!

Carrie's A&R team seems stuck on trying to recreate songs in the vein of either JTTW or BHC with TH falls into the former bin while CC/UI fall into the latter. IMO it's hurting her credibility as an artist, and she's in danger of falling into the Rascal Flatts/Martina McBride artistic rut of every album having a checklist of songs in similar styles/messages just with different lyrics. TBH, this is what I fear as well. If they don't want to promote at other formats, then I'm not sure why she is making songs like UI, to be honest. Because they can still be #1 country hits.... I'm with realityBITES, I don't understand it either. Making it is one thing, but to release it as a single to Country radio with no intention of sending to Pop? It's not like UI was the best bet to get to No.1, why choose it when it was polarizing and hardly loved by country critics? Unless the reason is simply because it was a Carrie co-write. Or some kind of deal for Kara/AI. Or both. Also, I think at this point of Carrie's career (#1 streak), having UI reaching no.1 doesn't necessarily mean it was the best choice of single. TBH, if MS could make the Top 5, I'm pretty sure SLT, WCIS, SWISLY etc could make it to no.1 in place of UI too...

Close the era with WCIS and bring on Album #4 with "Oklahoma Wind" as the lead single please. Get those country critics on your side Carrie! That would be 3 ballads in a row, which is probably not a good idea. If "Oklahoma Wind" is the lead single from the next album (which I don't think it should be), the final single from Play On should probably be up or mid-tempo. I would like to see the era end with "What Can I Say" and the lead single from the next album be uptempo (like a Cowboy Casanova-type song), and then Oklahoma Wind should be the 2nd single.

Is Oklahoma Wind going to be on the new album? Was it said anywhere? Just curious, even though I just think it's people hoping for that haha. Would be cool. I say end with WCIS or Songs Like This, but I have a feeling Mama's Song is the final single.
On the topic of Mama's Song, Tim McGraw just passed it, leaving it at #4 for a second week. Kenny is right on her tail and the song looks like it's peaking. I guessing this will be the peak for Mama's Song. Way better than I thought it would do. And it's another top 5 so that's still awesome!

'Undo It' comes in at #15 on Country Universe's Best Singles of 2010 countdown. Judging from what I’ve heard people say about this song, I don’t think there’s any middle ground on this one. Either turn the radio off in disgust, or turn it up and sing along.

Carrie Underwood is smoking hottttt. + her voice is impeccable. I actually really dig her new album. Sounds like she's transitioning as an artist.

Wow, Christgau singled out Carrie's Loretta cover as a favorite? In his time (i.e., before the Internet flooded the world with a democracy of reviews), he was probably the most influential rock critic around. Of course, that came with many considering him an insufferable boor. ;) But in any case, he's kind of an institution. He's the fellow who started the annual Pazz & Jop poll, for those of you who have heard of that.
I'm at risk of sounding too impressed by the guy -- I'm not really a fan (and disagreed with him often), but he's a guy whom I as a music fan usually didn't feel like I could avoid reading. So it's notable for me that he singled out Carrie's cover. The more I listen to it, the cannier a choice I think it was to slow down the tempo a bit; it allows Carrie to bring a bit of archness and swagger to the song.

Best Country Concert: George and RebaThursday, December 23, 2010 Tom Hood Country star George Strait shared the bill with Reba McEntire and Lee Ann Womack at Consol Energy Center in October. 1. George Strait/Reba McEntire/Lee Ann Womack (Consol Energy Center, Oct. 14): Consol's first country show was a meeting of music royalty. King George and Queen Reba showed why they have been the driving forces in country music over the past 30 years in a marathon, four-hour show that included a surprise visit by Kelly Clarkson. 2. Brooks & Dunn (First Niagara Pavilion, July 30): One of the most celebrated combos in country music history brought its Last Rodeo Tour to town with a 20-plus song set that hit the highlights of the duo's mix of good time honky-tonk and heartfelt cowboy ballads. 3. Carrie Underwood/Craig Morgan (Petersen Events Center, April 1): With her Play On Tour she upped the ante on her live production, flying above the crowd on a neon blue pickup truck, singing "Country Roads." What separates her from so many other touring acts with high-tech production is that she didn't need it. She's as strong a singer as we have in the pop, country or pop-country market. Craig Morgan proved to be a likable and energetic opener. 4. Sugarland (First Niagara Pavilion, May 14): The stage set was a huge menagerie of gears and mechanisms that made you feel as if you were watching the band perform inside a clocktower. The dynamic country duo and its talented band made good use of time, diving into crowd favorites such as "It Happens," "Settlin' " "All I Want to Do" and "Stay," plus a little Beyonce and Michael Jackson. 5. Brad Paisley (First Niagara Pavilion, June 12): The country superstar, born and raised near Wheeling, played blazing guitar solos and ran through a catalog of country's hottest hits that bear his name, including "American Saturday Night," "Celebrity," "You Do the Math" and "I'm Still a Guy." Before that party began, Darius Rucker opened with an OK set of mostly new songs from his freshman country effort and added Hootie and the Blowfish's "Hold My Hand." 'Undo It' came in at #1 on the CMT Top 20 Countdown of the Year, 'Temporary Home' at #12. --- I still can't get enough of 'You're Lookin' At Country'. I'd love to see that get a single release. I think it'd be a bold choice. And, in other news, has anyone heard anything about the Randy Travis Duets album?

I have a feeling Carrie Underwood will be at the #1 position (at least in Billboard) for the 01-15-11 chart with Mama's Song.
