I think rather than "Oriental" the term used now would be "East Asian."

I think it would be fair to say this is the biggest hit by an East Asian artist in a very long time. But... it's also worth noting they are apparently all American. And the guest performers aren't Asian.

It's pretty hard to make a lot of ethnic comparisons though considering how many people are of mixed descent, as we've seen in this thread.

There are all sorts of artists out there of Asian descent. In the states, you would naturally get more Asian-American artists than Asian born and raised based on geography

And what's sad, I think the biggest album "hit" by an Asian artist in the last 10 years was by William Hung. How freaking sad is that... It's like the only way an Asian can find mainstream music success in the US is as a gimmick. I really wanted success here for the Australian group The Temper Trap as the lead singer is asian, Sweet Disposition had all the fixings to be a huge hit here and yet US radio decided to pass it over. Now it's found a second life in the Coke ad but without radio support, it's not going to climb the charts anytime soon.

I stand corrected. I guess I'm recalling my facts incorrectly - maybe it was only song with no English or Spanish (since Spanish speakers make up a large portion of the country) but I don't necessarily recall.

Yes the other day I was part of an argument about how racist "Oriental" is.

It is interesting how rare it is for an East Asian to get success in music, though I know more about this matter in other entertainment avenues. I believe Lucy Liu was the first to get an acting Emmy nom, while Sandra Oh got 5 noms and losses in a row vs. her horrible co-star who won for her one nom. & currently 1 actor & 1 actress alive have been Oscar-nommed, while none have gotten a lead nom.

That's not true.. Japanese actress Miyoshi Umeki won an Oscar for Sayonara in 1957. In 2007 Rinko Kikuchi was nominated for Babel.

As for asian actors, Haing S Ngor won an Oscar for The Killing Fields, Japanese actor Ken Watanabe was nominated for an Oscar. as was Pat Morita for The Karate Kid...
