When considering she performed at the very beginning of the show, she only sang half the song, and that ratings on Thanksgiving are notoriously low, I'm not surprised.

X Factor hasn't seemed to push songs up very much on iTunes anyway. It certainly doesn't have anywhere near the same effect as Idol.

I hated Mr. Know It All, but I just head What Doesn't Kill You and I honestly believe it is one of the best songs of her. I am really appalled that this wasnt released as the first single. What were they thinking?
I just hope that the single's performance won't be affected as the hype as really died down after Mr Know It All failed to live to the hype. WDKY is just unbelievably good, everything about is just perfect

Tbqh, I would like to see it rising faster on iTunes to match its airplay success here - It's rising quite slow in comparison, currently #44. However, we all know New Zealand is the place of future hits, and it currently sits at #31, climbing over 50 spots today! :)

Yeah, frankly, I'm not that surprised either. This was a hype performance: if they really wanted a big showcase, they would schedule her for after Thanksgiving, with a 4-minute song and an interview, preferably on the finale. I would have loved to have seen her on the finale. Anyone think that is possible? Does her recent appearance rule out a performance at the end of the season, when ratings are highest? And I'm really looking forward to seeing how release-wise the singles play out. I'm looking for Dark Side, Let Me Down and The War is Over to be released, but who knows.

Yeah, no way would they have her back on the show to perform the same song.

I don't think she'll be able to perform again this season. I totally can see Rihanna coming back for the finale and perform her latest single thanks to LA tho.

I've been thinking about the vocal discussion of WDKY, and while no one can claim that it was her best vocal performance (though it bests all but maybe one or two MLWSWY televised promo performances), I think there are important things to keep in mind as we discuss why she's showing a few signs of trouble:
1)Okay queens, I belt to Kelly as much as the rest of you and feel thrilled when I get 98% of her runs down in my mp3 of her "Jesus What A Wonderful Child," but it's really not the same. Not only are we singing an octave lower, but men's voices are built differently. You can easily name a dozen men that have a chest voice range of two octaves--for women it's a much smaller list. The better way to test how well you sing a female song is to adjust the key. For me, and probably many of you, I can fairly comfortable hit a high Kelly G and an A fairly often, so let's say a A is my really high but fairly consistent note. For Kelly, that's an F--it's high for her, but she doesn't struggle with it much. That's four steps. Download Audacity (it's free and you can do lots of cool audio effects to songs, such as change the pitch without changing the tempo), and raise the key of WDKY four (or whatever your difference is) keys. Then sing it. Probably a pretty big difference. Also, for fun, it usually sounds better singing it in a more "correct" key than simply an octave lower, which almost always sounds a little too low and dull.
2) Kelly said in an earlier interview that the first thing to go when she's tired is her voice. I'm the same way--if I've been up long hours, I sound like I just came back from a Kelly concert. She's been doing round the clock promo, extra iTunes sessions, and shooting a music video all likely within the last week, so even if she hasn't been straining her voice, if she's tired, it's going to suffer.
Anyway, that's my two cents. I know we're past the dramatics of it all, but I was just thinking about it a bit the last few days.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Back to our regularly scheduled analyzing.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I know we're past the dramatics of it all, but I was just thinking about it a bit the last few days. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Back to our regularly scheduled analyzing. Very well stated. It appears from the tweets from Kelly's band members that they were in the studio recording (presumably for the upcoming iTunes EP) from November 16 - November 21, while also recording her music video on November 18, rehearsing for the AMAs on November 19, and performing on the AMAs on November 20 before performing 'Kill' on X Factor on November 23. There is a reason why only a handful of mainstream female vocalists (Jennifer Hudson, Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly, and perhaps a very few others) can consistently belt (sing purely in chest voice) in the upper end of the fifth octave (F5+). For example, Carrie Underwood, another top-notch vocalist, herself stated in an interview that the high note (E5) during the bridge of her song 'All-American Girl' was the highest note she had ever hit at the time. Further, Christina Aguilera, another top vocalist, at her peak struggled to hit an F5. For reference, here is a typical piano scale: Comparing a man's vocal range and woman's vocal range is entirely like apples and oranges. During puberty, testosterone changes the height of tightness of the vocal ligaments, and age has a similar effect: "Both boys and girls prior to puberty have an equivalent vocal range and timbre. The reason for this is that both groups have a similar laryngeal size and height and a similar vocal cord structure. With the onset of puberty, both men and women's voices alter as the vocal ligaments become more defined and the laryngeal cartilages harden. The laryngeal structure of both voices change but more so in men. The height of the male larynx becomes much longer than in women. The size and development of adult lungs also changes what the voice is physically capable of doing. From the onset of puberty to approximately age 22, the human voice is in an in-between phase where it is not quite a child's voice nor an adult one yet. This is not to suggest that the voice stops changing at that age. Different singers will reach adult development earlier or later than others, and as stated above there are continual changes throughout adulthood as well."www.vocalprocess.co.uk/resources/Developing_Voice_presentation.pdfWomen are typically divided into four groups: soprano, mezzo-soprano, Alto and contralto. Men are usually divided into four groups: countertenor, tenor, baritone, and bass. Soprano: C4 – C6 Mezzo-soprano: A3 – F5 Alto: G3 – E5 Contralto: F3 – F5 Tenor: C3 – C5 Baritone: F2 – F4 Bass: E2 – E4

Analysis of Kelly's vocal range, and whether or not a particular performance was one of her bests is fun, I suppose. But sometimes I wish we could all just sit back and enjoy the woman's amazing talent without nitpicking it to death. So much gets lost in all the over-analyzing and over-criticizing that it's like sacrificing the flowers for the weeds sometimes.
The performance on X-Factor was fine. The cartoon backgrounds were fine. Yes, she looked heavy again, but it is what it is. At least some female celebs are finally pushing back against the notion that a ridiculous anorexic look is somehow sexy and beautiful. It isn't.

The standard version of the album is on sale for $6.99 and is at #18 on iTunes while the deluxe version is at #27. Sales should be great this week!!

The discussion of her vocals in the performance really wasn't about the range itself though. It was more about the breathing, and that is (for the most part) independent highness or lowness. The breathing during the chorus was so wrong, which was apparent and amplified by her relatively poor vocal state* at the moment. All of that led to scratchiness and strain on the higher notes of the chorus, which aren't that high (for Kelly at least).
*this means relative to her normal.

I know you're a supporter of her vocals and not trolling, so that's not where I'm coming from, butthe notes aren't independent of breath control. The higher it is and bigger note jumps there are, the harder it is to maintain control and get adequate breath to perform them. It just takes practice, and that's all she needs. She said they had been struggling to find rehearsal time with all the promo, so she'll nail it shortly.

While she wasn't perfect, Kelly still sounded great on X Factor. I don't understand all the critical comments about her vocals during the performance.

It feels weird that the price was lowered this early after its release, but at least it can sell steadily until WDKY starts to smash and sell the album on its own.

It was not lowered because they felt they must, it is currently cheaper because shoppers are searching for discounts. Many albums have done that. Coldplay has, too.

'Stronger' is currently #10 on iTunes. #8 now. :) Interestingly, Coldplay who released 'Mylo Xyloto' the same day as Kelly released 'Stronger', has also lowered it's album price to $6.99, shooting the band's album to #1 at the moment on iTunes USA.

Being a fan kind of ruins the fun for some of you guys. Seriously, I'd be annoyed if Kelly gave a perfect performance every time, I like her raspy voice. The performance was great, the whole background scenery was awesome as well, it came across very well along with the performance. And oh my God, Kelly looked gorgeous. her hair, the dress, everything was on point for me. Let's stop complaining and have some fun, that's pretty much why Kelly loves performing!

Somehow I missed the EP announcement. SO EXCITED! I hope some real gems are on there. I assume it will be no repeats from Smoakstack Sessions, what would be the point of that anyway? I would die if she did a recorded version of UTTM. Just. Die.

For the EP, I really hope we get some older songs thrown in there like Just Missed the Train or Addicted. I'd even really enjoy a new version of Beautiful Disaster. From the new album, I'd love to see You Can't Win, Honestly and Breaking Your Own Heart.
