If Taylor Swift had released 20 weeks ago and it was Eminem that was selling the million this week would you be saying the same thing? I would be saying Taylor Swift has it locked. Hey albums release when they are released. Nothings changed. Albums are released the first week of January and the last week of December. It's really not a big deal. Maybe a little in perception that "so and so was the #1 selling album of the year" but in the long run it's not that important. Artists are not going to rush albums out just so they have a chance at the #1 selling album of the year. Taylor Swift and Susan Boyle are going to sell really well. I think Taylor could get to 3,000,000 by the end of the year. I think maybe 3,050,000. I think Boyle will be in the high 2,000,000 like 2,800,000. The industry really needs it. That is the reason i think Recovery is a lock. In your mind maybe me picking Recovery by 150K is too close to what i have Swift doing for me to say Recovery is a lock. If i had to make a final prediction. It would be. Recovery - 3,200,000 Taylor Swift - 3,050,000 Boyle - 2,800,000 So maybe as i said you think that's too close of a margin for me to think Em has it in the bag.

i think her market and promotion department will step it up to help her get her the additional boost to compete with eminem. i think her 2nd single is critical to whether she does eclipse "recovery."
whatever the result, it'll be great for the music industry...even when it comes down to the wire...to get that additional boost in sales for both artists

I don't think Susan Boyle will reach 3 million.
Why? - no hit single again - this is her second cover album without her own material - novelty has worn off
She might have a decent first week (500k+) but The Gift won't be number one for several weeks.
And part of me is hoping that Annie Lennox could have the best selling Christmas album but that's not very likely.

IDAD didn't have a 'hit single' off of it either and it still managed to sell. I think it will sell a lot, especially because its a Christmas album. Hot AC/AC will eat her up. Josh Groban's holiday album sold extremely well and he's the same kind of artist she is.

SuBo's album isn't a full-blown holiday album, though it probably will be classified as such since at least half of the album is holiday-related. The Crowded House cover is a bit odd, but I guess it's "inspirational."
SuBo and Josh Groban probably do appeal to the same consumer base- wonder if they'll help each other out in terms of sales this season.
RE multiple copies- I think that was more prevalent in the mid-90s to early 2000s- especially when CD singles were being sold for so little in some cases, and there wasn't much competition from other tracks (as they weren't available commercially). Not that it made a huge difference, but more likely were willing to do that at that time than in the iTunes age. And if there was some crazy number of same-item purchases from one iTunes account, iTunes probably would filter them out.

Unless I'm mistaken, it's not even possible to purchase the same track twice on iTunes. Whenever I buy a song, its font changes from black to gray, and the "Buy" button is replaced with the word "Purchased." I'm not sure about albums though.

It counts as 2.58 out of your pocket and into the pocket of itunes and two separate files showing up on your hard drive

No, albums can sell the full 3 million released now (and have before) Josh Groban released in October 2007 and was the #1 album of the year. He believes Taylor Swift will sell 3+ million this year and Eminem will hit 100,000 more than that. Why not the other way around? Why not Taylor Swift selling 100,000 more than Eminem? This is a biased Eminem fan talking rather than someone looking at realistic possibilities.

If people strongly believe either Taylor or Eminem will have the year end #1 album, let them be. This is a tired discussion and we still have two months. Let's wait a couple more weeks before we say this and that.

Since we're on the subject of best-selling albums of the year does anyone have a list of the top-10 selling albums of this year so far? Thanks! and Susie for the win!!!

Taylor will no doubt sell a ****load for the rest of the year but you're forgetting that Eminem's album is also still pulling in great numbers. It's not as if his album is falling of the chart, he's also likely push a ****load of sales this holiday season which is why I think she won't surpass him by the end of the year. It doesn't have to be a biased possibility. I'm a bigger Eminem fan than Swift but I'm pretty sure she will outsell him in the long run.

I saw "Hot Topic" in my local mall selling her album for $25, but it came with a T-shirt of the buyer's choice. That's BS! How the hell do you get "Hot Topic" selling your album, especially a supposed "Country" album. I'm no hater or anything, but I found that to piss me off slightly. No wonder this album is projected to sell 1 million in the first week, next for all we know, furniture stores will be selling the freakin' album! lol.....oh well, if you really want the numbers this day and age, I guess you have to go all out.

It makes little difference in the end. If someone wants to purchase the album, they will, regardless of where its available. The same applies if someone doesn't want to purchase it. It's not as if people are going to flock to their local Hot Topic because the album's available there (especially considering it's available at much more prominent stores across the country). In the end, I think all of this commotion about her label using tactics that apparently some feel is "unfair", is pretty silly. A discounted price on Amazon (which is fairly common among new releases) and broader availability at smaller chains across America might push this just over the million mark (or pad its total slightly) in the end, but the album was set to do huge things regardless. I think some people at this point are just searching for anything to discredit the album's colossal opening week (no matter how desperate/ridiculous the statements sound).

Honestly, I'm glad Taylor is pushing the 1+ million. Do I wish it was Carrie or Brad or some other fave instead? Sure. But, in the end, Taylor doing so well is only helping us get more CDs from our faves instead of having them resort to digital downloads only. That can never be a bad thing.

It is biased if we say that we think Eminem will squeak by Taylor Swift by 100,000 or so but the reverse is not possible, that it is not possible that Taylor Swift will squeak by Eminem. I understand that there are a couple die-hard Eminem fans here and I respect that but saying one is possible but not the other is not an objective comment, it is a biased one.

No one knows what's going to happen. Opinions are all we have and everybody's a bit biased.
Objective comments are boring.

I think some people at this point are just searching for anything to discredit the album's colossal opening week (no matter how desperate/ridiculous the statements sound). What does that have to do with what I said? I was just pointing out how it makes no sense that "Hot Topic" is selling the album because, they have never been involved with music retail, and they are typically a store that appeals to "darker" styled people, which seems far off from those who may like Taylor. It'd be one thing if they were selling Eminem or Greenday, but Taylor Swift? That just got me upset because it doesn't make sense, and the whole $25.00 with the "free" T-shirt is ridiculous too. As I said, if they want the numbers, they would have to do this regardless. Big Machine isn't afraid to spend a lot, because they will almost certainly make a chunky profit. I just think the marketing is a little over the top, Hot Topic??? Come on now! It's Taylor Swift, they can't expect to sell that much at "Hot Topic" when in the same mall, there is an "FYE" selling the album for $14.00..... Just doesn't make sense to me. But, hey, they're the ones racking in millions from this album so I can't really say they have done anything wrong... lol

What does that have to do with what I said? Uh, everything. You just said "no wonder the album is projected to sell 1 million in the first week" insinuating the album will open so huge because it's available at a broader range of locations. I was simply pointing out that its availability at smaller chains, such as Hot Topic, wasn't going to be a major contributor to the album's opening figure. Speak Now is not the first album that has been available for purchase at or through Hot Topic; they've carried cds from several major artists in the past and even have cds available for purchase at their online store (including Sugarland's latest).
