Why is it that every week this thread somehow gets turned into Rihanna vs. Mariah Carey? They are two TOTALLY different artists who make two TOTALLY different types of music and are from two TOTALLY different time periods. Yes, they may have both had amazing chart success, but in my opinion there is no point comparing them as it is never-ending battle.

I can't understand where the rivalry comes from either.

Well, if you'll take note, the only thing anyone compared was their chart success, not their music itself. That's what we do in every chart thread. So-and-so sells so much or gets x position on the chart or does extraordinary chart feat, so we all wonder how that compares to other artists and what the future may hold. Why is that so strange? Rihanna's accomplishments are indeed impressive and it's a complement to her star power and her staying power that people are speculating about whether or not she could take down Mimi for the most #1's. And I think this is only the second thread I can recall that's turned into Mariah vs. Rihanna, at least recently.

Congrats RiRi 8 #1 in just 5 years I think the most impressive aspect of Rihanna's success is the small window of time she's had to do it. How she's able to solidify such great producers and writers year after year for bonafide hits this quickly is simply impressive. Not just 8 US #1s, but 17 US Top 20s in five years. Her album sales may be dragging, but she and her management sure know what they are doing about the hits.

The thing about #1s is that they dont define an artist's worth. If Beyonce/Eminem/Celine never get another #1 they still would be better and more sucessful/respected than Rihanna. As far as Im concerned she can beat Mariah's record but she still would have had the impact she did.

What bothers me is the fact Madonna has SO MANY #2 hits.
If her #2 singles were #1's-- she'd had 18 #1 hits, and passing the Beatles with Mariah.

Let's just be happy for RiRi for her 8th #1. If it makes you guys feel any better, she "only" has 6 solo #1's, so she still has quite a long way to go. People are up in arms about it. It' gonna take awhile for her to even get there. This maybe her only #1 this era or not.

Rihanna is a hugely successful singles artist, yes. At first I thought I might be upset about her no. 1 debut, but then I looked and saw that Take a Bow was already a radio hit (no. 20) the week it hit no. 1 so now I don't care either way.
I don't know much about Abdul, but Beyonce does have a truckload of Grammys. So she is pretty highly regarded.

Really? So first you rack up a certain amount of #1 hits and then you become a huge album seller? Is that how it is supposed to work?

I can see what pno means. It makes me feel old as hell, but I am teaching students right now who are 17-18 years old. That means most of them were babies or not even born when a lot of the artists I would consider big, huge, influential people were big. They just do not GET why Mariah, Madonna, Nirvana, and others are considered the biggest, most influential musicians. One of them also referred to Britney Spears as "she was a pop star a long time ago, right? **twitches** Anyway, I suppose my point is that musical influence is a strange thing and it is hard for me to imagine not being alive or just being a baby during some of these artists major runs. It definitely changes the perspective. They also named Lady Gaga as the voice of their generation lol-and NO I did not influence this at all. I asked out of curiosity

Yeah that is true-when we were discussing people they seemed to know her for the whole mental breakdown thing over having a connection to her being the biggest pop star ever or knowing her earlier material. Like, one acted like she barely knew she did music. Its just strange talking to them about music because it is so different from my own perspective or on here where everyone is at least somewhat musically knowledgeable and in love with pop stars.

Beyonce actually has garnered more reverence than Paula Abdul.
And some are still getting into the No. 1s discussion? After it's been established many times that it has nothing to do with an act's reverence or acclaim/importance. Yes, I said acclaim. :) Look at the list of acts with the most No. 1 hits and then compare to their performance at acclaimedmusic. A completely different picture in many instances. I don't think Aretha Franklin and The Boss are crying about not having 2 and ZERO No. 1 hits on the Hot 100.
