The chart is perfect the way it is. It's the most fair formula. No one prevents them other songs to be sold for 99 cents too. You're right. no one prevents the others from selling for 99c but obviously Rihanna'a team are the desperate ones. I am sure the other contestants would like to be #1 too but they choose to not cheat. :) Dropping the song price 4 days before the end of the week and begging young fans on Facebook to buy the song AGAIN is ridiculous! I am a fan of Rihanna's song but what her team is doing is so wrong! :) The good news, I think we all know what's gonna be #1 next week! :) It's not cheating, so NEXT!

SHAME on Rihanna for using tricks just for steal another No-1.... I think Bollboard must change the chart system . i think we have to go back to the 80% airplay-20% sales... without discount prices on itubes or Amazon... Someone has to prevent this chart...otherwise US official chart would become ...Belgium chart Rihanna would still be getting #1's with an airplay heavy system since she is played on multiple formats. Plus we'd never hear the end of people complaining about R&B/Hip Hop dominating the Hot 100 again. The system is perfect how it is.

Pink's camp could've done the same. The music charts are a game, Rihanna's camp came to play.

I mean, the $1.29 is the one that's getting majority of the sales and has been rising even despite the cheaper version...it's not as if the version selling for 99 cents is one fans are buying more. (And there still wouldn't be anything wrong with that)

(And there still wouldn't be anything wrong with that) both units are 99c ... the increase started since it went on sale. it was charting around #7-#9 for the last 3 weeks. :)

You can't "steal" No. 1's...she'll get another No. 1 because she earned it.

Rihanna could easily wind up with a 11-12 #1's by this time next year. IDJ may not always hit home runs with her singles, but overall they're on top of their game.

The song was discounted only 30 cents, it is not like they are giving it away
If enough people buy it to push it to #1 then so be it

I wonder if Bruno's Just The Way You Are will make a return trip to #1 since it's going to be featured on Glee this week. doubtful. it could happen, but i dont think so. and im starting to get mad at people for complaining about a price cut. seriosuly a price CUT. god. some of us look for bargins. some of us like sales. and some of us cant afford to always buy songs for 1.29. he team is very fair and being nice to the fans. who cares if they are doing this for the number one. the team couldve just bought the extra copies themselves. instead they are letting fans get a discount Is the percentage currently 50/50? If so, that is as fair as it gets. Don't throw 3 or What's my name into. They fairly hit #1 on the charts. You do realize that most people don't even look at chart positions to determine whether it is a hit. I'd rather OG hit #1 than WMN only because it seems like a better song but the rules are the rules. Riri can have all her #1 singles...and who cares about glee vs. beatles. In two-three years Glee will be a thing of the past and it will not matter if they have more chart entries...Beatles song made history on quality.

There are no fixed percentages. It depends on the song. For example, most Glee songs are probably 99.5% sales, 0.5% airplay. Songs with no purchaseable single available are nearly 100% airplay, with whatever streams accounting for some minimal chart points if monitored streams are available.
The points are unweighted.

I think that's right to a certain extent
There is no consistency. Not all songs are treated equally. However, if in extreme examples like say, Kid Rock songs where there is no single component. I don't think they just throw everything into airplay, otherwise, 'All Summer Long' would have charted higher(because it was a big airplay hit). They likely weight it down a bit because there are no sales on Kid Rock singles (at least until this album)

When you hear percentages you are only hearing an average distribution. They convert sales and airplay into points and add them up.
Sales are divided by 10 (so 100,000 downloads sold = 10,000 chart points)
Audience impressions are divided by 10,000 (so 100 million impressions = 10,000 chart points)
Streamings are divided by 500 (so 50,000 streams = 100 chart points)
They add all those points up for each song, and then you have the order of the Hot 100.
There is no "weighting" beyond the divisors they choose to determine points. For example, each individual sale weighed more when they first started using digital sales (they used to divide by 5) until sales grew to a point where it was, on average, giving more weight to sales than they wanted. So they switched it to divide by 10.
Every song is treated equally.
But if a song gets say, 150m audience impressions and 100k sales, it's getting about 60% of its points from airplay. If a song gets 50m audience impressions and 200k sales, it's getting about 80% of its points from sales. (I'm ignoring streaming because it's a smaller factor and also we rarely get those statistics.)

I really love that WRWWR, RYG, and Firework are at the top of itunes. Nice inspiration for being different. Wish Gaga would hurry up and release Born This Way so that all four would be at the top together :)

RYG isnt' different. It's a standard P!nk track and not even a very good one at that.

There are TONS of songs on iTunes being sold for $.99 like they used to be before they upped prices. Even some new singles start off at $.99 instead of the usual $1.29.

Rihanna Breaks Pop Songs No. 1 Record by Gary Trust | November 22, 2010 11:05 EST The song is Rihanna's seventh Pop Songs leader, pushing the singer - and 2010 American Music Award winner - past Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga, each with six.
"Only Girl (In the World)" introduces Rihanna's fifth studio album, "Loud," which is expected to debut in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 to be refreshed, along with all charts, Thursday (Nov. 25) on Billboard.com. The song has reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Follow-up "What's My Name?," featuring Drake, topped the Hot 100 two weeks ago.
Here is a look at the seven songs that have propelled Rihanna into the lead for most Pop Songs No. 1s since the Nielsen BDS-based list launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992:
"SOS" Date Reached No. 1: May 13, 2006 Weeks at No. 1: one
"Take a Bow" Date Reached No. 1: July 5, 2008 Weeks at No. 1: three
"Disturbia" Date Reached No. 1: Oct. 4, 2008 Weeks at No. 1: three
"Live Your Life" (T.I. featuring Rihanna) Date Reached No. 1: Dec. 27, 2008 Weeks at No. 1: two
"Rude Boy" Date Reached No. 1: May 8, 2010 Weeks at No. 1: two
"Love the Way You Lie" (Eminem featuring Rihanna) Date Reached No. 1: Aug. 21, 2010 Weeks at No. 1: two
"Only Girl (In the World)" Date Reached No. 1: Dec. 4, 2010 Weeks at No. 1: one (to-date)

It so funny that her biggest hit, Umbrella, did not make the list.

If so, I love how Mariah, Beyonce, Gaga, Brit Brit, Pink and Riri and making things interesting since they are so close. Almost like the three way tie at one point with Mariah, Whitney, and Madonna for #1's at one point.

Yes- Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart/Pop Songs only debuted circa September 1992. I just posted the R&R Pop info as an FYI, for those interested to see a larger scope.
