You're right. no one prevents the others from selling for 99c but obviously Rihanna'a team are the desperate ones. I am sure the other contestants would like to be #1 too but they choose to not cheat. :) Dropping the song price 4 days before the end of the week and begging young fans on Facebook to buy the song AGAIN is ridiculous! I am a fan of Rihanna's song but what her team is doing is so wrong! :) The good news, I think we all know what's gonna be #1 next week! :) It's not cheating if everyone is capable of reducing prices. Pink's camp could've done the same. The music charts are a game, Rihanna's camp came to play. If they reduced the price to 10 cents would you say it's cheating?

Is the percentage currently 50/50? If so, that is as fair as it gets. Not at all. The digital sales/airplay ratio is actually 1000 to 1.

But if one is interested in buying a $1,29 song and another one that's just, say, 50 cents, one is most likely to buy the latter, not because they like it better, just because it's cheaper. But thsese charts should be about the songs that are more popular/people like better, not the ones people just bought because of the low price.

BDS tracks airplay based on number of plays, time of day, size of station reach, and formulates scientific estimates of the number of times a song is heard.
Soundscan tracks the exact number of times a song is sold.
Billboard works out a ratio where sales and airplay have roughly equal input into the formulation of the Hot 100.
Your argument that 1 sale should only be equal to 1 time a song is heard is ridiculous. You can buy a song and listen to it hundreds of times. Conversely you could hear a song on the radio 100s of times that you hate. Purchase shows a clear interest that is much more involved than hearing something in the dentist waiting room.
Some people never buy music.
Some people never listen to the radio (I don't, ever, for example).
They are juggling a ton of potential inputs and mindsets and using raw hard numbers to come up with a list.

Yes, just becuase it is discounted doesn't mean I am buying it Example, I pass on a majority of the free stuff that itunes has and don't mindlessly download just because of the price

superbat, Billboard does note that it's just for the 18-year run of Top 40/mainstream (now known as Pop Songs). That's why I posted the No. 1s list for the CHR/Pop chart on the prior page. (now updated with Alanis Morrissette, BTW).

songs hit #1 because people want to buy them. Hell even legal free downloads have trouble getting as many downloads as paid ones.

Rihanna can't perform. Stiff. Mediocre vocal. Boring. That's usually the case. Pink, on the other hand, is usually good live. I'm not understanding this comparison, though. I love Riri but you are right...her stans are referencing videos from this era as if she has done an amazing job. By Riri's standards it is okay but still not noteworthy. It's like me saying Britney slayed her performances during the Circus era (with her excessing arm flailing ) in comparison to her VMAs 2007 flop...she could only go up from there...

I don't care if RCA didn't work a single from Burlesque- the fact that "Express" has NO audience is telling. I'm sure RCA demanded that radio not play any of the songs, as exposure may hurt the movie.

Not sure what you think science means here, or what answer you're looking for? Obviously it's impossible to know an exact measurement of something as intangible as "popularity" but BB has spent decades honing this ratio even as the market has changed numerous times.
