Poll: Most Iconic VMA Performance Posted 8/12/11 10:20 am ET by John Mitchell in Newsroom Poll, VMAs Every year the MTV Video Music Awards feature some of the biggest and most memorable performances from all of your favorite artists. Less formal than the Grammy Awards, the VMAs give artists the opportunity to let their hair down and really go out on a limb to put on some of the most daring and exciting performances of their careers. Simply put, you’re not going to see a blood-soaked Lady Gaga dangling above the stage or a wedding dress-clad Madonna climbing down a cake and rolling on the floor anywhere else. But Madonna’s star-making turn at the inaugural VMAs and Gaga’s electrifying take on “Paparazzi” are just two of the most iconic moments in VMA performance history. Who can forget when Sting joined Diddy, Faith Evans and 112 to pay tribute to Notorious B.I.G. with “I’ll Be Missing You” in 1997, or when Eminem surrounded himself with lookalikes to perform “The Real Slim Shady” in 2000? And, of course, many are still jealous of a certain python that got to spend a few glorious seconds draped around Britney Spears’ shoulders in 2001. Narrowing down all of the classic VMA performances to a short list of the most iconic was a major task, but we think we’ve singled out the ten most unforgettable performances in VMA history. Now it’s your turn to tell us which performance is the Most Iconic VMA Performance Ever. Vote after the jump. Most Iconic VMA Performance: Madonna, “Like a Virgin” (1984)Guns N’ Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle” (1988) The Rolling Stones, “Mixed Emotions” (1989) Bon Jovi, “Livin’ on a Prayer”/”Wanted Dead or Alive” (1989) Michael Jackson, “The Way You Make Me Feel”/”Scream”/”Beat It”/”Smooth Criminal” Medley (1995) Diddy, Faith Evans, 112, Sting, “I’ll Be Missing You” (1997) Aerosmith, Run DMC, Kid Rock, “Walk This Way” (1999) Eminem, “The Real Slim Shady”/”The Way I Am” (2000) Britney Spears, “I’m a Slave 4 U” (2001) Lady Gaga, “Paparazzi” (2009) vote here: newsroom.mtv.com/2011/08/12/most-iconic-vma-moments/

Poll: Best Video Of The 1990s Posted 8/12/11 10:45 am ET by John Mitchell in Newsroom Poll, VMAs Bolstered by the efforts of pioneering video artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Janet Jackson, the idea that a music video could be a piece of art really started to take shape in the 1990s. Videos were once considered something of an afterthought or a piece of promo material, but these vanguard artists made them part of the conversation. Did you know that Pepsi severed its $5 million deal with Madonna because it didn’t want to get caught up in the controversy surrounding her (awesome) “Like a Prayer” video? Or that Martin Scorsese (!) directed MJ’s video for “Bad”? To say that the ante had been upped by 1990 is an understatement, so it’s no surprise that videos just kept getting better and better, as reflected by the winners of the Video of the Year MTV Video Music Award. Music clips suddenly became a new way for artists to really hit home the message of a song. Who was most successful? Best Video of the Year Winner of the 1990s Sinead O’Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U” R.E.M., “Losing My Religion” Van Halen, “Right Now” Pearl Jam, “Jeremy” Aerosmith, “Cryin” TLC, “Waterfalls” Smashing Pumpkins, “Tonight Tonight” Jamiroquai, “Virtual Insanity” Madonna, “Ray of Light”Lauryn Hill, “Doo Wop (That Thing)” vote here: newsroom.mtv.com/2011/08/12/best-video-vma-1990s/

Poll: Most Outrageous VMA Moments Posted 8/12/11 10:25 am ET by John Mitchell in Newsroom Poll, VMAs Outrageous moments are nothing new to the MTV Video Music Awards, the two go together like bread and butter. We suppose things are bound to get a little wild when you throw the biggest stars in the world into a room for the express purpose of having a good time. The VMAs are unlike any other awards show around because the point isn’t to have a quiet, dignified gathering to honor the best album by a 100-piece orchestra; it’s to rock out and give props to the hottest things in music in a particular year. Instead of sleepy applause and thanking the academy, you get the Queen of Pop locking lips with her heir apparent or living legend Diana Ross getting a little grabby with an overexposed Lil Kim. That’s just how we roll here at MTV. While just about every VMA moment is pretty outrageous, a few definitely stand out and have withstood the test of time to burn themselves into the collective consciousness of we connoisseurs of pop culture. Help us decide which of these eight incidents is the most outrageous moment in VMA history. Most Outrageous VMA Moment Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic tosses bass/smacks self in face during “Lithium” performance (1992) Howard Stern’s Fartman appearance (1992 Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley kiss (1994) Courtney Love crashes Madonna interview (1995)Diana Ross grabs Lil Kim’s pasty-covered boob (1999) Rage Against the Machine bassist climbs the set (2000) Madonna kisses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera (2003)Kid Rock vs. Tommy Lee fight (2007) vote here: newsroom.mtv.com/2011/08/12/most-outrageous-vma-moments/

Some of those choices are a little iffy. And that Best Video poll just takes into account the winners- there probably were years that nominees in one year (i.e. "Vogue") were better than some winners in other years. :) And frankly, RE Ms. Spears, I'd rate her 2000 VMAs performance as more memorable that snake bit.

COADF certainly didn't rival ROL's level of critical success. it's a strong album, no doubt- but ROL just had a magic about it (as with LAP). if the new album comes somewhere in between ROL and COADF, it will be a very nice piece of work. Totally agree. COADF was great but Ray of Light was in another league entirely. I don't think anything on COADF could really touch the high points of ROL.

I've just seen the video for "Paradise (Not For Me)". It's beautiful. youtu.be/64FqRlvPbAgShe was all mature, artistic and edgy back then. I wonder if she can go down that road again. It would certainly fit her age better now, but it is a hard decision to make.

Oh cool. I like the fun fact they posted: "#1 Madonna, “Like a Prayer” Year: 1989 Fun Fact: Madonna intended the song’s famous chorus line “I’m down on my knees / I wanna take you there” to have a dual meaning, implying fellatio as well as prayer. When co-writer/producer Patrick Leonard first heard the line, he insisted Madonna get rid of it, threatening to walk from the song. But the pop star stood firm, insisting “If you don’t wanna work, then go. I’m not changing anything.”Best Moment: Madonna’s exhortation to “Let the choir sing!” at 2:21—which she then does—officially kicking the song into its highest gear." You have to love her!

Madonna - Madonna Works 'Tirelessly' In The Studio15 August 2011 06:45:35 AM Madonna is ''easy'' to collaborate with and ''works tirelessly in the studio,'' according to Paul Oakenfold, who produced her 'Celebration' track. The DJ produced Madonna's 2009 single 'Celebration', and said she was anything but a diva to record with. He told altsounds.com: "Madonna was without doubt one of the best artists I have ever worked with. She had so many fantastic ideas and really took her music seriously. "You can tell that with Madonna, everything is about the music. She's a global name but still works tirelessly in the studio, puts on her best possible live gigs and puts 100 per cent into everything she does. "She's really grounded too and easy to work with." www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/madonna-works-tirelessly-in-the-studio_1239719

Elvis Presley & Madonna: The Day the Music Died, and Was Born August 16, 2011 11:45 EDTby Keith Caulfield & Gary Trust Today marks the date that we welcomed the Queen of Pop and lost the King of Rock & Roll. Madonna was born Aug. 16, 1958. As we celebrate the Material Girl's 53rd birthday, we likewise note the 34th anniversary of the passing of Elvis Presley, who died on the same date in 1977 at age 42. In honor of two of the most prolific hitmakers in Billboard history, here is a look at some of the chart records that the icons claim. MADONNA - 37 top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles. The Beatles, with 34, rank second. Madonna's first top 10 was 1984's "Borderline," which started a streak of 17 consecutive top 10s through 1989's "Cherish" (No. 2). Her most recent top 10 was "4 Minutes," featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland (No. 3, 2008). - 55 titles on the Hot 100 since her debut the week of Oct. 29, 1983, with "Holiday," which peaked at No. 16 in January 1984. (She last visited the chart with "Celebration" (No. 71) in 2009. Since her Hot 100 arrival, Madonna leads all women for most chart appearances. Mariah Carey ranks second with 43 visits in that span, followed by Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Taylor Swift, each with 39. - Seven Hot 100 No. 1s in the '80s, tying her with Whitney Houston for most among women during the decade. Madonna's total haul of No. 1 Hot 100 hits is 12, the fourth-most leaders all-time. (The Supremes also boast 12 toppers). Only the Beatles (with 20), Carey (18) and Michael Jackson (13) have earned more No. 1s. Coincidentally, Madonna claimed her fourth No. 1, "Papa Don't Preach," on this date in 1986, her 28th birthday. (Aug. 16 also doubles as the launch date of Billboard's Dance Airplay chart in 2003, a list that Madonna has led seven times). - 40 No. 1s on Billboard's Dance/Club Play Songs chart. Essentially, if Madonna releases a single and it charts on Dance/Club Play Songs, it's a safe bet to assume it'll go to No. 1. Since 2000, she's placed 23 hits on the survey. Of those, all but five went all the way to No. 1. Madonna is clearly the Queen of the Club. (Janet Jackson is next with 19 No. 1s). - 19 top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, the most such sets among all artists dating to her first week in the top tier (Oct. 6, 1984) with her self-titled debut. She most recently hit the top 10 with the live set "Sticky & Sweet Tour," which debuted and peaked at No. 10 April 24, 2010. Of those 19 top 10 efforts, seven reached No. 1. In that 27-year span, Carey and George Strait place second with 16 top 10s each. As Madonna is preparing her next album, more Billboard chart history could await the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-enshrined Queen of Pop within the year. ELVIS PRESLEY - 108 Hot 100 hits, the most among solo artists in the chart's history (among all acts, only the "Glee" cast (156) has inked more charted hits; Presley's career predates the Hot 100's 1958 inception). The King's 104th charted title, "Way Down," originally peaked at No. 31 the weeks of Aug. 6 and 13, 1977. After dipping to No. 53, following Presley's death, the song roared 35-24-21-18, marking his last top 20 track. - 80 top 40 Hot 100 hits, the most such showings in the tally's archives. Elton John ranks second with 57. On the first Hot 100, dated Aug. 4, 1958, Presley ranked at No. 4 with "Hard Headed Woman" and at No. 34 with "Don't Ask Me Why," each featuring his longtime gospel backing band, the Jordanaires. - 122 Billboard 200 charted albums, the highest total in the chart's 55-year history. Ten of those sets reached No. 1, beginning with "Elvis Presley," which ruled for 10 weeks in 1956. His most recent reign came courtesy of "Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits" in 2002. Presley last appeared on the survey when "Elvis Is Back!" spent a week at No. 199 on the March 26, 2011, chart. - 67 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the most time spent at the top for a solo act. Garth Brooks and Michael Jackson follow, each with 51 frames in charge. Presley's longest reign? The "Blue Hawaii" soundtrack totaled 20 weeks at No. 1, beginning in December 1961. - Presley became the first rock artist to make two trips to the Hot 100 summit, as "Stuck on You" began a four-week command April 30, 1960. That song, recorded shortly after Presley's discharge from the Army, followed "A Big Hunk O' Love," which led the Aug. 15, 1959, chart. While Presley's last perched atop the Hot 100 No. 1 with "Suspicious Minds" (Nov. 1, 1969), a song he sent to No. 2 in 1962 at last reached the pinnacle 31 years later: UB40's take on "Can't Help Falling in Love" spent seven weeks at No. 1 in 1993. The reggae cover was amid its chart dominance on this date 18 years ago. www.billboard.com/#/column/chartbeat/elvis-presley-madonna-the-day-the-music-1005317502.story

^Thanks for posting., :)
The top 10 and Hot 100 stats do not include her unofficial 56th and 38th Hot 100 and Top 10 hit, "Into the Groove." As a commercially released single- albeit in 12-inch form- we have the evidence that shows it would have been a top 10 hit (top five at the least).

Madonna, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry in Britney MTV tribute?August 16 2011By Lewis Corner, Music Reporter Madonna, Lady GaGa and Katy Perry are among a host of stars who will reportedly pay tribute to Britney Spears at this month's MTV VMAs. The music video ceremony will include a tribute to the 29-year-old, but MTV executives have yet to comment on what it will involve. However, TV producer and casting director Jonathan Woodbeck has tweeted what he believes will happen at the show on August 28. He wrote: "If this lineup is legit (which I'm told it is) the tribute to Britney at the VMAs is gonna be insanely EPIC!!" He then listed several artists along with the Spears track they will perform on the night as part of a medley. The list is as follows: Selena Gomez: '…Baby One More Time' Katy Perry: 'Oops!…I Did It Again' Janet Jackson: 'I'm a Slave 4 U' Demi Lovato: 'Toxic' Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj: 'Gimme More' Lady GaGa: 'Circus' Britney Spears: 'Hold It Against Me'/'I Wanna Go' Madonna will then apparently take to the stage to present Spears with a 'Lifetime Achievement' award. MTV has yet to confirm or deny the reports. The MTV Video Music Awards will take place on August 28 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. www.digitalspy.com/music/news/a335329/madonna-lady-gaga-katy-perry-in-britney-mtv-tribute.htmlHuh? Why is MTV doing a tribute to Britney? How long has she been in the business? 12 years? A Lifetime Achievement Award? I don't get it!

Yeah I'm sorry but thats crap. Janet Jackson is not going to be "paying tribute" to Britney Spears. No shade on Britney but that's not going to happen. Jesus himself couldn't get a tribute performance with Madonna, Janet and Gaga. Plus this isn't the BET awards...they don't try to do a million surprise performances in a night.

I'm a huge Bon Jovi fan, but even I don't remember that performance as much as her "Like A Virgin" performance! I do think it's getting rigged, I mean, everyone voting Panic At The Disco and The Killers for best rock? SERIOUSLY NOW?
