VMAs Gone Wild: An Adorable Cat Reenacts Madonna's Legendary 'Like A Virgin' 1984 VMA Performance



Who could forget Madonna's legendary 1984 VMA performance of "Like A Virgin"? You remember: the one where she dressed up like a randy bride in a Boy Toy belt and a wedding dress that felt more like the underpinnings of a regular wedding dress and then proceeded to lay down and consummate her marital relationship with the stage.

What does Madonna's VMA performance have to with a cat? Not much, but everything has to do with cats when you blatantly get a cat involved. Which is why we -- the same people who brought you dogs dressed like Cher and Lady Gaga in her VMA meat dress -- called upon a gifted cat name Mona to dress up like a cat version of Madonna and recreate Her Madgesty's iconic "Like A Virgin" VMA performance -- cat-sized wedding cake and all -- in today's VMA animal reenactment.




Mona the cat's version of "Like A Version" is far tamer (get it? tame?) than Madonna's but no less inspired. Upon descending the cat-sized wedding cat, Mona pauses (or PAWS-ES? GET IT?), gives the camera a silent Blue Steel stare (WERQUE!) and then calmly descends the cake staircase, arriving at the kitty VMA stage, then finishing her performance with the decision to nap. (That's vintage cat right there.) Because being Madonna is exhausting (all that yoga and clean eating!). And because sometimes you're just plain tuckered out.

And seriously, a round of applause for Mona. She was the sweetest cat maybe possibly of all time (um, I kinda know what I'm talking about when it comes to cats), and I was a little afraid I'd get kicked off the set for cooing over her like a wackadoo. If cats could roll their eyes she probably would've rolled them at me for fawning so unabashedly in her little kitty face. But really, could you blame me? SHE'S ADORABLE AND DRESSED LIKE MADONNA!! For real though, I'd give this cat a Moonman if I could.

Madonna’s New Album – More Info on the Recording Sessions

After having revealed the Madonna/Martin Solveig collaboration, Madonnarama just got some new exclusive info on Madonna’s current recording sessions for the upcoming album.

Like we confirmed a few weeks ago, William Orbit is one of the producers of the album. Joining the William Orbit-team is songwriter and record producer Jean Baptiste Kouame who co-produces WØ tracks. Jean-Baptiste worked with plenty of big names including Kelis, Kid Cudi, Rihanna and Macy Gray.

During the “Ray of Light” and “Music” sessions, the wait between different recordings did take quite a while, because Madonna recorded all the demos before they could be reworked. To be more efficient this time and avoid long waiting times between takes, William Orbit is using Charlene Ava as a demo vocalist. This way the creative process isn’t interrupted and multiple demos with Ava’s vocals are sent to Madonna, so she can make a selection without having to sing every single demo herself. The background vocals might also include Charlene Ava’s voice, alongside Nicki Richards, Donna DeLory and Orbit, but nothing has been decided yet.

Photographer Kevin Westenberg, who has shot plenty of celebrities and even Madonna backstage at Live8, has recently been working with William Orbit. He did take some studio pictures of the recording sessions that might be used in the future.

Finally there seems to be a lot of confusion about the W.E. soundtrack, and we would like to remind you that William Orbit’s music is not used at all in Madonna’s second directorial effort. The whole soundtrack has been composed by the amazing Abel Korzeniowski.

It's interesting that they mentioned Donna DeLory doing that as there had been rumors of some animosity after she and Nicki Richards were only a part of a few numbers during the Confessions Tour. She said something about how she didn't like being behind a curtain for 2 hours. Nicki Richards has been involved in the last two tours.

^The backup singers' involvement in her shows has been on the decline since Drowned World Tour. The Confessions performance that was most like the glory days of Madge-Donna-Niki Harris was "Lucky Star"- though the DVD cut out Richard's talking bit about how M was heavy to lift up. :)

It was an amazing tour. It was very different this time because we were not out there as much with the audience. It’s a job at the end of the day and if she didn’t want me out front then that’s fine. I’m there for her and employed at the end of the day. We fit into the show in the best way possible. It didn’t work with us on the stage out front so we were in a separate part and then came out now and again. Jump was incredible and Music was amazing. It was so uplifting. I thought it was incredible to hear the old school version of Lucky Star in a live show. That was amazing for me.

Funny thing is that there wasn't any actual sex in the book. In retrospect, it was rather tame compared to stuff you saw at newsstands. But for a mainstream pop act to do something like that. :o Just one of many risky ventures Her Madgesty took on.

Clooney, Madonna Get Behind Camera, Premiere at Venice: Preview

George Clooney, Madonna and Al Pacino will present movies of their own making at this year’s Venice Film Festival, starting tomorrow. (today)

Sharing the spotlight is Roman Polanski, whose “Carnage” -- with Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet -- is about two sets of parents squabbling over a fight involving their kids.

More than 20 movies will jostle for Venice’s top honor, the Golden Lion, during the 11-day festival on Venice’s Lido island. The seven-person jury, led by “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky, includes musician David Byrne.

One contender for the Golden Lion is the opening movie: Clooney’s “The Ides of March,” starring Ryan Gosling, Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti. In it, Clooney runs for president: He’s a suave, silver-haired candidate with a fresh-faced press aide (played by Gosling) who he calls “my brain trust.”

Clooney “knew exactly what he wanted, and he was very specific,” Gosling told New York magazine in an Aug. 21 interview. “A lot of directors aren’t so clear.”

Gosling likened Clooney to Michael Jackson in the movie “This Is It,” where Jackson is “trying to explain to a keyboard player how to play a certain part -- even in the sea of parts being played, he can pick that out. That’s kind of what George is like.”

Madonna’s “W.E.” is an exploration of desire inspired by the story of King Edward VIII and the American divorcee Wallis Simpson, for whom he gave up the throne. In the movie, a Manhattan-based woman, trapped in an unhappy marriage, develops a fixation for Mrs. Simpson, and finds herself another man.

Polanski Arrest

While Madonna’s movie is not in the race for the top prize, Polanski’s is. “Carnage” marks the Polish-born director’s return to the big screen. He was freed from house arrest in July 2010 after Swiss authorities refused to extradite him to California, where he is wanted for sentencing in a case involving unlawful sexual conduct with a 13-year-old girl.

Also premiering at Venice is Pacino’s “Wilde Salome,” inspired by Oscar Wilde and his play “Salome.” Pacino co-stars with Jessica Chastain (recently in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life.”)

The U.K. artist-director Steve McQueen will be in contention with “Shame” -- the story of a promiscuous young man whose errant little sister (Carey Mulligan) moves in. The lead is played by Michael Fassbender, who was Bobby Sands in McQueen’s previous work, “Hunger,” about Northern Ireland.

Out of the official competition is director Steven Soderbergh with “Contagion,” an action movie about a deadly global pandemic. Matt Damon, Winslet and Jude Law star.

Madonna’s “W.E.” Gets Slammed at its Venice Film Festival Debut


When Madonna arrived in Venice today for the premiere of “W.E.,” her second feature as director, to a media frenzy, she was surely hoping the film would have a better reception than “Filth and Wisdom,” her critically challenged debut. Unfortunately, that isn’t going to be the case, and some critics have argued that the high-profile project might be even worse.

The film, which was snapped up by The Weinstein Company and has been receiving good buzz for months for its ambitious storyline - a dual narrative about Wallis Simpson and a contemporary counterpart - and its bold casting of Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough. But Madonna is the master of buzz, even when it turns out to wholly unwarranted.

Nobody was expecting Madonna to come up with a masterpiece, but it seems the Weinsteins have a real dud on their hands.


Movieline - MIXED
A weirdly sympathetic portrait of Wallis Simpson, the woman for whom a king gave up his throne, W.E. is the story of a life told through stuff: Evening gloves, cocktail shakers, baubles from Cartier, little hats trimmed with netting. It’s as if Madonna went back in time and forgot to talk to actual people, to find out how they lived and what they thought — but she sure did a lot of shopping.

The Telegraph - MIXED
It all looks good, or at least glossy, in the manner of high-end cosmetics commercials. Exotic locations (Portofino, Cap d’Antibes) are visited and luxury brand names (Moet, Cartier, Schiaparelli) tossed around. Wally pays repeatedly visits an auction of the Windsors’ possessions; W.E. often feels like an extended infomercial for Sotheby’s New York. Occasional flashes of wit intrude. “Your Majesty, you know your way to a woman’s heart,” Wallis says. “I wasn’t aiming that high,” he replies. But such moments are rare.

The Playlist - VERY NEGATIVE
All in all, we can only imagine that the Weinsteins bought the film sight unseen, or that they’re hoping to make a fast buck off the back of “The King’s Speech,” because despite a couple of solid performances, the film can’t be redeemed. We’ve never looked forward to Madonna going back on tour more, if only because it means that we’ll know, for certain, that she won’t be using that time to direct another movie.

The Hollywood Reporter - MIXED
This feeling of inevitability, backed up by snippets of Wallis’ own letters registering feelings of being trapped, and her and Edward’s eventual sorry fate as “the world’s most celebrated parasites,” is the one aspect of the story that rings true on a human level and is appealing and almost touching for that. The rest, unfortunately, feels artificial, programmed, rote.

The Guardian - NEGATIVE
For her big directoral flourish, Madonna has Wallis bound on stage to dance with a Masai tribesman while Pretty Vacant blares on the soundtrack. But why? What point is she making? That social-climbing Wallis-Simpson was the world’s first punk-rocker? That – see! – a genuine Nazi-sympathiser would never dream of dancing with an African? Who can say? My guess is that she could have had Wallis dressed as a clown, bungee jumping off the Eiffel Tower to the strains of The Birdy Song and it would have served her story just as well.

Can't imagine that, even with the "buzz" from before, that some thought this movie would be some critical smasharoo. My primary interest in M is for the music and what she does with it- no matter how this movie fares critically or commercially, I'll doubt I'll see it in a theater. Even on home video, I've never watched Shanghai Surprise or Swept Away- and could not make it through Dangerous Game. :)

Madonna heads back behind the camera for W.E., an elegantly woven story linking a modern New Yorker’s desire for true love with the passionate relationship between American Wallis Simpson and King George VII. It is a beautifully staged film punctuated with nuggets of charm and style and dominated by a majestic performance by rising star Andrea Riseborough as Wallis.

It is a beautiful film and often a real visual treat.
Riseborough – a bewitching English actress who has been threatening to grasp stardom for a few years now – is quite brilliant as the chic American Mrs Wallis Simpson who entranced the British King in the 1930s. In a film that is perhaps to busy and overly multi-layered for its own good, she is the charismatic core and helps give it an energy lacking from the other parts of the story. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

W.E. may be a tough sell to those unaware of that famous love affair, and though the relationship was naturally touched upon in The King’s Speech, this film does not have that film’s easy appeal for older audiences looking for more Royal romance. Instead Madonna aims high as she seeks to tackle love, celebrity, fame, abuse and disappointment, often hitting her targets – and sometimes not – but always offering up images that are beautifully shot and staged.

By all accounts, Madonna has been intrigued with the story of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (as they became known after he abdicated and married Wallis), and by viewing that relationship with the fictional story of Wally Winthorp (Abbie Cornish), a young woman obsessed with the story and seeking to find a love as apparently strong as theirs, she attempts to offer up a more rounded (and certainly unconventional, given that at one stage Wallis dances along to the Sex Pistol’s song ‘Pretty Vacant’) presentation of the story of Mrs Wallis Simpson.

It is 1988, and stylish and elegant Wally Winthorp (Australian actress Cornish sporting dark black hair to heighten her association to Wallis) is caught in an empty marriage with doctor William (Richard Coyle, dressed to look very 1950s) and seeks escape in constant visits to Sothebys auction house in New York – where she used to work – which is displaying items from the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor prior to an auction.

She finds herself increasingly transfixed by these artifacts from the Windsors’ lives – whether it be clothes, furniture, jewelry or images – and clings to their appearance of the perfect love affair as way of hoping that her relationship will work. When her husband turns abusive she turns to hunky Russian security guard – who happens to work at Sothebys and takes a shine to her – who offers her compassion and affection.

Her story is set alongside that of Wallis and King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy in an impressive performance) – or David as he lets his close friends call him – briefly dwelling on Wallis’s first marriage (to an abusive man) before detailing the moment she first met the soon-to-be King while still married to her second husband.

Wallis is a strong and charismatic woman – also great at dancing, a beautiful dresser and mixer of top-notch cocktails – who wins over David with her wit, charm and forthright nature. In this peach of a role Andrea Riseborough is sheer perfection – not only does she look a lot like the real Wallis, but she elegantly combines ambition, compassion, humour and fear as Wallis finds herself on a rollercoaster ride as parts of English society take against her when he abdicates and they are forced to live overseas.

Naturally much will be read into Madonna’s fascination with a woman harassed by the press and forced to make many sacrifices, though at its heart W.E. is about the search for true love.

The device of having the two stories works pretty well in the first half of the film, but as the Wally story heads off into melodrama territory things do get clumsy at times and the final section that sees Wally head off to Paris to try and get to read Wallis’s private correspondence only bogs down the story rather than aid it to its natural conclusion. It is a device for Wally to learn that Wallis was never as happy and content as she had imagined, but it would have perhaps been better integrated in a different fashion.

The Paris side trip sees Wally head to a meeting with former Harrods chief Mohammed Al Fayed, who owned the letters. For one terrifying moment I thought we might get a cameo from Al Fayed himself, but instead he is played by Haluk Bilginer.

Abbie Cornish has perhaps the hardest role. Her Wally (unfortunate name) is elegant and beautiful (and spends a good deal of time in her best slinky underwear trying to entrance her hubby) but is given little to say and flies close to being bland when she should be intriguing. Cornish can do sad and soulful extremely well, but much of the film features scenes of her wandering around wistfully prior to another flashback dwelling on Wallis and Edward.

Where Madonna does get it spot-on is in terms of costume, style and production design. It is a beautiful film and often a real visual treat. She also can’t resist a few unusual musical moments that help give the film a needed sense of quirkiness and drive. W.E. is a film will have its detractors – but Madonna is used to criticism – and while certainly not perfect (and could easily be trimmed) it does have delightful and memorable moments…and best of all in Andrea Riseborough it has a remarkable and mesmerising central performance

Theres no focus on the film...even with her music, there is no focus sometimes. Erotica was a great album, but everyone focused on her Shocking moments and ignored the great music.
