Receipts?...are you telling me that no one was able to count record sales until 1991???..common now??..lol..ill end this here by stating the fact......and the fact still remain's. In certain international markets, they do not have accurate tracking systems the way other countries do. In the U.S. you also have the pre-Soundscan era and music buying club sales (which were not factored into Soundscan). There was this Greek singer Nana Mouskouri, and her label claims she has sold between 300 and 400 million albums. Some of her fans claim it is as high as 900 million! The 450 million figure for Nana originates from a Maxim magazine article, they literally just took how many different albums she's released and gave 1 million sales to each. She hasn't even sold 1/3 of that as she never made a notable impact in the US, UK or Japan, the world's 3 largest markets.

Nevertheless, Madonna is the BEST selling artist of all time.... Does that include singles? Albums + singles+ videos = records, right??? She is the best selling worldwide female artist but Michael Jackson is the best selling artist (solo) of all time right???

slw- 300m would include albums and singles. Not sure if videos would be included- but that would be the smallest component in there, anyhow. The albums figure probably is 200m+, while the singles figure (including physical and digital) is 100m+.
I went to listen to "Masterpiece" again on YouTube and it's gone. Wish they'd put it on iTunes.

Out with the new and in with the, er, mature? Billboard turned the usual year-end list mania over to its readers via polls that asked them to have their say in such categories as Best Awards Show Performance (the winners: Rihanna and Britney Spears at the Billboard Music Awards), Best Festival Performance (Coldplay at Glastonbury), Hottest Couple (Jay-Z and Beyonce) and Biggest Controversy (Amy Winehouse’s death). But the real eyebrow-raiser is the Most Overrated label being slapped on Lady Gaga.
You really couldn’t miss Mother Monster, who grabbed 30% of the vote and beat runner-up Britney Spears and Justin Bieber for Most Overrated, in the past month. In addition to her A Very Gaga Thanksgiving special, the singer snagged Grammy nominations for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance, premiered her “Marry The Night” video, appeared on the covers of both Vanity Fair and Elle and performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that Gaga was just named the top-earning female musician of the year, after banking a cool $90 million, by Forbes.
Meanwhile, MADONNA edged out Nicki Minaj and the reunited No Doubt for Most Anticipated 2012 Album. The Material Girl’s brand new label deal with Interscope, home of Gaga, Eminem and U2, to name a few, was announced this week. And as for that anticipated album, it’s due out in March, and will be preceded by the arrival of both lead single “Gimme All Your Luvin” in late January and Madge’s Super Bowl halftime performance on February 5.
Madonna’s upcoming directorial effort W.E. (in theaters February 3) also earned two Golden Globe nominations yesterday, including one for the multi-talented performer’s ballad “Masterpiece”.
Other Billboard readers poll results included R.E.M. topping the Saddest Breakup list and Jennifer Lopez being awarded Best Comeback.

Wouldn't 2/7 be the most to-the-moment? That would be a couple days after the SB performance. I suspect, though, it will drop sometime in March, unless they really want to capitalize and push it up. I'm Ok with the March release of the album, as long as the single was/is available during the Superbowl Performance, which it should be.

Oh no. They have gone and photoshopped Madonna's head on Lourdes' body and used Mercy's bedroom as the set. I hope this new album isn't a 'concept album' like Gloria Estefan's Miss Little Havana which was referencing past work both musically and in the promotional images and covers. I'm getting really worried about this album. I keep having this recurring nightmare that the album ends up debuting at number 3 behind Lady Gaga's new EP released the same week, and Adele's 21 that still hung on.

That's fanmade, and not real. The background is taken from a Hayden shoot, and her face is from the Hollywood single cover.

Too funny. :)
Madonna probably wants to challenge conventions about age, but images like that would be a tad ridiculous. :) (Though she did dress as a young girl in a photoshoot for the Sex book and in a shot from the book itself).

I feel like M has a chance of hitting 400k albums sold during the release week. No way she'll miss the #1 spot.

She's only topped 400K once in the SoundScan era, with Music (420K in its first week). Ray of Light did 371K (back when mass merchants' sales week was Saturday-Friday, vs. Monday-Sunday for other sales reporters). The last three albums opened with 241K, 350K and 280K. If she topped 300K in the first week, that would be pretty darn impressive.

Can Madonna make a comeback at 53?
With a new multimillion-dollar record contract, the Queen of Pop hopes it's not too late to re-conquer the music charts No surprise: Madonna is staging another music comeback. The singer signed a new three-album deal yesterday with Interscope Records, for which she'll earn a base of $1 million per album. (She split with her longtime label, Warner Brothers Records, in 2007.) She also announced that the first of those three albums will be released in March 2012, soon after her high-profile Super Bowl halftime performance. Madonna's last album, 2008's Hard Candy, was one of her least successful yet, and her latest directorial effort, the film W.E., has been ravaged by critics. Are the odds of a comeback stacked against her?
It's not looking good: Madonna simply isn't as popular as she used to be, says Josh Grossberg at E! Online. Her previous album Hard Candy was a commercial disappointment. Along with 2003's American Life, it's one of only two Madonna albums that failed to achieve platinum status, even though it boasted Justin Timberlake and Kanye West as collaborators and a modern "urban flavor." And since Hard Candy, the music scene has been dominated by new, improved Madonnas like Lady Gaga. Even so, the original is "still a music force to be reckoned with."
"Can Madonna make comeback in Lady Gaga-dominated world?" Of course she can make a comeback: This makes way more sense than those ridiculous deals being made in baseball, says Kyle Anderson at Entertainment Weekly. Albert Pujols' lucrative 10-year contract will pay him into his 40s, even though his stats prove that he's on the decline. At an album-every-three-years rate, Madonna will be 60 when she releases her final record under the Interscope contract, which seems comparatively acceptable considering that she "has been an innovator and a shape-shifter for the entirety of her career." If "stylistic shakeups" like the recently-leaked "Masterpiece" are any indication, she shows no signs of stopping.
"Madonna sings three-album contract with Interscope, continues comeback run" Either way, this is a wise business decision: This is a surprisingly "rational deal," says Peter Kafka at All Things D. The kind of money Madonna's being offered, may seem like chump change "she would have laughed at in the past" — especially considering that Bruce Springsteen signed a $100 million deal with Sony not that long ago. Yet Madonna is "long past her music-selling peak, and the music industry is a decade past its peak, too." If she still wants to make a splash on the radio, she needs a record label behind her to "deliver the Big Reach." All things considered, this is "a very reasonable contract."

Did anyone hear the "Music" demos where she sings: "Do you like to Tango?" "Do you like to B-Bop?" "Do you like to Mambo?"
So thankful they scratched those lyrics.

Anything is possible, especially if the album is 99 cents on Amazon and available for preorder during the Superbowl! :)~

chartfreak- for mass merchants like Walmart, the sales week was Saturday-Friday- so first-week sales did not include two days from those outlets./ The first chart in which ALL sales were from a Monday-Sunday period was the week in which garth Brooks' Double Live scanned 1m+- it was speculated that without that change, the album would not have done 1m+. On the flip side, while some first-week sales numbers may not have reached their full potential, we saw lesser second-week declines, because there was two days from the prior week in the mix for the mass merchants. Hope that makes sense. :) And, you should know that if the album is 99 cents at Amazon in its first four weeks of release, those sales would not count for the Billboard 200.
