That seems sort of low for her but I guess she hadn't really benefited from a crossover hit so if that's all from pop then that's kind of incredible. It was also a different era where pop/dance was not nearly as popular as it is now. Toxic, if released today, would probably easily be a #1 hit and with higher airplay too.

Only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" began at a higher rank, having rocketed in at No. 12 the week of Aug. 14, 1993. :'( :'( Legend!

The "what is a single?" discussion becomes kind of pointless. Billboard will show everything that charts on the Hot 100 as a "single." So from the official perspective, this argument is moot. If you have your own personal consideration for what counts as a single, you can make your own list, but it's going to be your list and your list only... I think everyone understands that there is a difference between a song that is "actively" pushed as a single vs. one that just happens to chart. But what 2m is rightly pointing out is that the line between the two is by no means easy to delineate and thus kind of pointless from a "records" perspective. I've noticed that Billboard, over the past year or so, has started referring to certain songs as "focus tracks." So Katy Perry had 3 consecutive "focus tracks" reach number one, although several other 'countdown singles' charted in the interim. For chart records in the 21st century I think this is a good way of looking at it.

The stations count definitely does help in terms of achieving new records. Back in 1992-1995, the number of stations that comprised the Top 40 Mainstream panel was between 70-80 (with a number of other stations that still were part of the panel that submitted ranked radio playlists). The number has fluctuated from year to year, but I believe the stations count is at its highest right now (130, which it's been for some months; recent Mediabase panel changes are another story).

I think the common term in all these phrases is "single"
"radio single" "digital single" "countdown single"
they are all still singles, which was my original point.
The generic term "single" is being applied to a very specific setting by the original poster
A song released to radio, with a video is a "single" - I agree, but it is also a "radio single"
A song released to itunes and abailable for purchase but not played on radio is also a "single" however it is not a "radio single"
So if we want to say that Nicki Minaj has the most ever "radio singles" charting as a lead or featured artist by a female with videos also available on youtube during the time of initial release and whose singles or albums were not on special discount at itunes and whose singles were not "repressed" then I agree ;)

You say this practically every day. You do understand that airplay is not some hegemonic thing, right, it's composed of a bunch of different formats. Songs that get super high AI are songs that cross over to lots of formats. Stereo Love is pretty much a strictly CHR song. Its airplay is quite good for that. You seem shocked that a song by a new, foreign artist with little crossover appeal isn't automatically #1. It's doing way better than I would have ever guessed. Hardly every day. So what if I am following the "chart success" of Edward Maya? Are you going to try and put everyone else in their place who has to talk about Taylor, Britney, Eminem, Mariah, etc every day? This is a thread about Hot 100 songs and their chart growth. I would suggest that if my observations of a song that I enjoy "put you off", then just skip over them. I am shocked that a song by a foreign artist with little crossover appeal is stalling at radio here, he can't seem to crack the 50 million mark in audience impressions. But you know who else faced that battle and won last year? La Roux. If they can do it, why can't Edward Maya do it? It's not just "my personal thoughts and opinion" as to why this song should be more successful, it's not sitting at #17 on the Hot 100 because of MY preference. Get over yourself. La Roux did it because their song appealed to more listeners than 'Stereo Love' did. 'Stereo Love' is a club song and 'Bulletproof' is a pop song. Two totally different animals and, if anything, you should be happy with the success SL has gotten because it's great for a song of its nature.

Why is the year 2011 so void of airplay updates? We haven't had a continuous string of them since last year. Now it's like once a week at best. Are those people just mia?
