I smell a "website-only" within five years....

Source?
I'm seriously considering canceling my subscription. So many cutbacks at Billboard...
Fred Bronson was let go. Chart Alert has been changed.
My main interest is album sales and RIAA certs. Since both are down, I think I'll survive.

Source: The latest indicia from my magazine, changed as of 1/22/11.
"Published weekly except the 1st & 3rd week s in Jan, 1st week in March, 2nd week in May, 3rd week in July & last week in Dec". Naturally, subscription rates hold steady!

It's Cashbox all over again.... I'm assuming they will publish charts online during those weeks. I haven't picked up a paper issue in years and it was my bible. Too much news happens daily that published issue just doesn't make sense.

There are a lot of people who collect the charts, either as photocopies or PDFs through Joel Whitburn's services. This will mess that up totally.
I have noticed - having bought the mag for almost thirty years - that it has gotten progressively thinner with less 'meat' over the last 5 years - far more stories about celebrity and less info for retail / radio / industry folks.

Print editions of anything do not do well anymore. If this is true, I am surprised it didn't happen sooner

No, wolf74, they have only published 51 weeks a year for decades.
Thus this year they are getting rid of 5 extra weeks.

far more stories about celebrity and less info for retail / radio / industry folks. Yeah, I hate that. The website is similar. It seems like they post more gossip than industry news. If I wanted to read about Christina Aguilera's divorce, I'll go to perezhilton.com, not billboard lol

I think they let Fred go because of a combination of two things: they were cutting staff at teh time, and the direction they wanted to go with Chartbeat (ie: every day, more integrated with the other chart based articled) was not Fred's style.

I used to read Fred every week but since he was let go, I barely go to the website at all. Is there an equivalent section that has fun chart facts?

Well, Chartbeat is still there, run by Gary Trust, and updates almost 5 times a week. It got off to a shaky start, but is pretty fun now. They regularly do weird features such as counting down the top 11 songs that have have peaked at #11 over the course of the rock era (because its 2011). Its OK, but it is definitely missing the Fred Bronson / Paul Grein touch.

The print edition is a waste of money. Sure, the color, layout, graphics, etc. are more visually appealing than the very basic website. But, most charts are not even published and those that are published are usually abbreviated. The only reason they likely keep the print edition alive is for the ad revenue.

Another weird thing is that if you analyze the comments on their message boards = the posters are illiterate morons. They make Pulse posters seem cultured and refined. It is very telling, considering that for decades BB was a magazine for professional grown-ups!

They've pretty much dropped every reporter who worked there during the boom years for cheap labor/interns, hence why things are more tabloidy than they used to be. Chuck Taylor (Airwaves, Singles Reviews) has a blog now but he hasnt found anything besides occasional freelance assignments and door to door census taking as a job since he was dropped. The labels don't even seem to buy the full page ads to promote their new albums like they used to. Been a weekly reader since 1991 but its slowly devolved from me being anxious for the new issue to arrive and spending 90 minutes studying it to spending a cursory 15 mins a week and feeling like I know it all before it arrives thanks to their website and the delay in getting issues out to me.

:'( I love the magazine. Unfortunately I can't subscribe to Australia, but I do have two from 2008 and two from 2010 (including the EOY), I love reading them. I wish they keep it up, I hate website-only publications. Seriously, their magazine has been popular for what.. 120 years?

Nielsen/SoundScan no longer owns Billboard magazine. They sold it last year.

But, most charts are not even published and those that are published are usually abbreviated. The only reason they likely keep the print edition alive is for the ad revenue. Although I hadn't picked up a physical issue in a while (none of the local stores sell it anymore), I did whenever I could. The new format does look nice sometimes, but that's about it. There was little substance in terms of charts, etc. Another weird thing is that if you analyze the comments on their message boards = the posters are illiterate morons. They make Pulse posters seem cultured and refined. It is very telling, considering that for decades BB was a magazine for professional grown-ups! When nearly everyone can register on those boards and post whatever they want, they will with such disastrous results. You should see the type of postings and comments people post on various news sites. It's a shame that it has gotten the way it has, but there isn't much we can do about it. It was great while it lasted. :'( I love the magazine. Unfortunately I can't subscribe to Australia, but I do have two from 2008 and two from 2010 (including the EOY), I love reading them. I wish they keep it up, I hate website-only publications. Seriously, their magazine has been popular for what.. 120 years? You can view some scanned archives of the magazine on books.google.com. Another weird thing is that if you analyze the comments on their message boards = the posters are illiterate morons. They make Pulse posters seem cultured and refined. It is very telling, considering that for decades BB was a magazine for professional grown-ups! Yeah, that's very strange. I guess with the Internet comes a whole new generation of chart freaks. Some of the stuff is almost entirely incoherent. It's very much like those ATRL boards. It makes some of the obsessed fans/stans posting here at PMB seem almost normal.
