GRAMMY NOMINEES, WISIN Y YANDEL TOP DEBUTS It's Going to be Another Tough Sales Week
January 26, 2011
After a nice debut by The Decemberists this week, the chart will return to its historical lows again, with Jive/JLG's 2011 Grammy Nominations album in competition to be next week's top debut with a total between 40-45k. After one day of sales, and subsequent reports from retailers not still fretting about the discovery of Oprah's half-sister or Keith Olbermann's exit from MSNBC, the CD actually has a shot at #1 overall on next week's chart.
Still, the compilation will get a run for its top spot from Machete Music Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Wisin Y Yandel, with a first-week total expected between 35-40k for Los Vaqueros: El Regreso, which loosely translated means, "Hey, we beat all the gringos in sales this week." Actually, it means, The Cowboys: The Return, and how's that for high school Spanish? Based on sales from the island, it could surprise and land at #1.
Indie fave Iron & Wine, the nom de artist for South Carolina-born, Austin-based singer/songwriter Samuel Beam, make their major label debut on Warner Bros. (4AD overseas) with Kiss Each Other Clean, on track for between 28-32k, and could well go higher. Blue Note/EMI Philly tunesmith Amos Lee has been moving up with every release and Mission Bell, his fourth for the label, seems on target to be his best debut yet, with 27-30k after spending some time at #1 on iTunes and Amazon. Downtown Records emo pioneers Cold War Kids' latest, Mine Is Yours, should do between 15-18k
The market was up 8% vs. last week, down 10% vs. same week last year and still down 11% year to date. Will somebody out there please release an album that might sell?

LOL poor Grammy can't even outsell Kidz Bop or Now. And THAT is sad. *shakes head at record labels and the lack of record buyers*

Really hope Wisin Y Yandel don't go near #1, they're terrible. Although if they do, it'll be the first fully Spanish language album at #1. Selena's "Dreaming Of You" had a number of English tracks when it debuted at #1 following her tragic passing.

This means that this week's #1 will sell less than 10% of what the #1 sold a year ago. Eugh.

yeah go Wisin y Yandel! They are amazing guys! My brother is buying their album in this moment! :) I like reggaeton music. if they made music in English they were more popular than Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias i think. Just listen to their flow, their sound, you don't have to know Spanish to understand that their music is awesome. I hope they debut at#1. They are Really talented singers. Listen up.

Meanwhile, over in the UK, the number 1 album next week will probably debut with around 250,000 in sales.

The top of next week's chart may once again set a new low for sales of the #1 album. Two titles are battling it out right now, with a third in contention as a possible spoiler. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*2011 Grammy Nominees (Jive/JLG) 35-40k Nicki Minaj (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 35-40k *Wisin Y Yandel (Machete Music) 32-37k *Iron & Wine (Warner Bros.) 28-32k *Amos Lee (Blue Note/EMI) 28-32k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 28-32k Mumford & Suns (Glassnote) 28-32k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 28-32k The Decemberists (Capitol/EMI) 28-32k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 25-28k P!nk (LaFace/JLG) 24-27k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 22-25k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 22-25k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 20-22k Gregg Allman (Rounder) 20-22k
*Debuts

Here's Billboard's verdict:
Grammy Collection, Iron & Wine, Amos Lee Headed For Top of Billboard 200 January 27, 2011 – Record Labels | Retail
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Well, that was fast.
After a bright week where the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart defied expectations and sold more than 90,000 -- the Decemberists' "The King Is Dead" -- it looks like we're diving back to lackluster numbers next week.
Presently, industry prognosticators are thinking the No. 1 could possibly be the new "Grammy Nominees 2011" compilation, with maybe 35,000 to 40,000 copies sold by week's end on Jan. 30. Also in the running for a high entrance -- Iron & Wine's "Kiss Each Other Clean" (perhaps 35,000) and Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" (around 30,000).
An album that debuted on this past week's chart, "Kidz Bop 19," may see a soft second-week decline and threaten to hold at its debut slot -- No. 2. It started with 70,000.
A wild card in the mix is Wisin & Yandel's "Los Vaqueros: El Regreso," which could sell anywhere in the very wide range of 15,000 to 40,000. It's too early in the week to accurately project how the set will finish the week -- as it could register strong sales from Puerto Rico over the weekend.

Wonder if Pink will be able to crack the top 10 at some point- that would be icing on the cake for this GH era.

wow, those are crazy low sales for the top spots. There is only 15k separating the top 15. It's anyone's game.

Hope Nicki get's that #1. Me too...let's see what SNL will do. Usually Monday sales and somewhat Sunday sales are impacted after SNL.

Anything important coming out next week? Nicki could potentially manage 2 weeks at #1 from the SNL effect. I can't wait for post-Grammy sales. Then Adele, then Jay-Z/Kanye, then Avril/Lupe, then Britney. Not too much longer in this rut.

It would be awesome if Nicki could get the top spot this week and even more awesome if Bruno could make his way there at some point! It seems nowadays if you don't debut at #1 you'll never get there, so would be great to see these two hit the top months after their release.
