I would love it if Mumford & Sons got two top 40 tracks out of this... I wonder how high The Cave can peak with this week's sales. Little Lion Man also has to re-enter on sales alone - it has been in the top 20 nearly all week on itunes - surely that will get it a new peak in the top 50? Can someone clarify this with Billboard so it doesn't MISS out???

^^ Infact I'd argue that it is largely because of the promo that BTW is doing so well in the US. In other major markets like the UK and Germany she's been booted from #1 already despite the massive hype. That wouldn't have happened had the song been anywhere near as strong as Bad Romance, Poker Face, Just Dance, etc. Not all markets work the same way. In the UK and Germany, for instance, it's very hard for a song to debut high up right out of the gate without airplay and video. That's why Britney's HIAM was initially planned to be released in Feb in those 2 markets. 'Bad Romance' debuted at #14 in the UK -- it got to #1 later on with the video out and increased airplay. For BTW to debut at #3 after it had been on sale for just 34 hours is excellent and a significant improvement from BR (and BTW would've been a lock for #1 this week if not for the Brit Awards). BR debuted in the top 10 in only 3 markets and then went on to top the charts in a dozen markets later on. It followed a common trajectory for a lot of hit songs -- Rihanna'a OG, for example, debuted in the top 10 in only 2 markets before topping the charts in about 10 markets later on after its airplay had caught up. BTW debuted at #1 in 7 markets and in the top 3 in 5 other markets so far, so it's actually doing much better right out of the gate than BR was. Whether or not it's going to do better than BR in the long run is still up in the air, and you're of course entitled to your opinion about the song, but your using its performance so far to back up your opinion that it isn't anywhere near as strong as BR is invalid.

First up, you can't compare Born This Way with Bad Romance. Bad Romance and the whole Fame Monster project was pretty much what transformed Gaga from "hottest popstar of the moment" to "cultural phenomenon". The hype surrounding Born This Way has therefore been far bigger than the hype surrounding Bad Romance. She could have released just about anything and it would have done better out of the gate than Bad Romance. Hell, I bought it because I love Gaga, despite the fact that the tune is crap. Secondly, Born This Way initially had almost the same impact in the UK and Germany that it had in the US, so the general idea that the markets are different in this way is bollocks. Thirdly, the main difference between the performance in the US on the one hand and UK/Germany on the other is that Gaga has done MASSIVE promotion in the US and basically no promotion outside of the US. Hence BTW faded quickly in the UK/Germany and has kept up sales in the US. This is basically what I have been arguing all along. Fourth, there NO WAY that Born This Way is gonna have the longterm impact of Bad Romance, Just Dance, Poker Face or Paparazzi. It will soon fade into obscurity and hopefully her second single is gonna make us all forget this atrocity.

She could have released just about anything and it would have done better out of the gate than Bad Romance. Hell, I bought it because I love Gaga, despite the fact that the tune is crap. No, it's not a fact that BTW is crap. It's your opinion, which you're entitled to, but you're trying to cast its performance so far in a bad light to show that the entire world agrees with you. The thing is, the song has been doing very well so far. It may or may not continue to do so in the long run, but to use its performance so far to support your opinion that it's a crappy song is ridiculous. Yes, BR brought Gaga to another level, and her next single was bound to do better initially than BR, which is exactly what BTW has done so far and more. But there simply isn't enough evidence to say that the quality of the song has nothing to do with how well it's been doing. No, it didn't. Its pop bars there weren't anywhere near as far ahead of those of the #2 songs as the US one was (almost 7x bigger). Again, I don't see how it supports your argument that the public agrees with you that its a crappy song. A song could have promos up the wazoo, but it won't sell if the public doesn't like it. If BTW isn't selling despite the promos, then yes, you may argue that the public agrees with you, but that's not the case here -- BTW is selling, and it's selling very, very well. And who's to say that when she starts doing promos in other markets that it won't have the same effect that it currently does in the US? Again, that is your opinion. You seem unable to fathom that other people may think differently no matter how strongly you feel about it. I'm not saying that what you said^^ could not happen -- BTW could very well do so in the long run. But what I'm trying to say is that you simply can't use its performance so far as proof that the public agrees with you that's it's an atrocity .

Its going to be hard but if it goes the way of Crazy and peak at #2 then so be it. I don't see any challengers for #1 until mid to late March. TBH.

And don't forget Grenade is still in the competition for next week. It's #3 on iTunes right now, and #1 on airplay chart.

Again, I don't see how it supports your argument that the public agrees with you that its a crappy song. Well, I have never actually made this claim. What I have claimed is this: a) That the impressive start to the chart career of BTW was due to massive hype, not to the song being fantastic. Hell, even I bought it and I don't like the song. b) That the relatively strong performance in the US as opposed to other major markets like the UK and Germany, is primarily expained by differences in promotion. And yes promotion sells regardless of how good a tune is. If 90% thinks a tune is crap and only 10% likes it, massive promotion will still make those 10% aware of the song's existence of which they would not otherwise be. c) That the drops in the UK and Germany despite the massive hype is somewhat an indicator of the song's longevity. I don't believe you can compare this with previous hits which have peaked upon initial release, dropped quickly and then climbed up again with increased airplay and video play and the reason for this is that the hype and hence awareness of BTW has been bigger than for just about any other song in recent memory. Sure there's still a lot of people unaware of the song and airplay is always gonna help, but I just don't think it will help enough to give this song longevity. d) I personally find the song bad. That would largely be irrelevant when it comes to chart performance, since I find a lot of major hits bad. However, I am part of Gaga's core audience given that I'm a massive fan of her music. I've encountered loads and loads of other Gaga fans with the same perception of this song. That doesn't mean that we're "objectively" right, but it does constitute a potential problem for Gaga if she releases music that her own fans doesn't like.

The drops in the UK and Germany despite the massive hype is somewhat an indicator of the song's longevity. But perhaps the song is only behaving a bit differently in the UK and Germany? The competition is so strong in both countries atm: Lena in Germany, Adele and Jessie J in the UK. BTW has sold pretty well there too. I do believe it will reach #1 position in both countries after the video is released.

What was the last album to have 4 #1's? Confessions?
What was the last album to have 4 #1's without a re-release?
What was the last album by a female to have 4 #1's?

Does anybody knows why B&Y is bleeding in airplay????
Good thing it was able to reach #1 2 weeks ago.
It was (just like OG) a ¨Last Chance Harvey¨type of situation .... lol

You are correct about "Confessions" being the last album to have 4 #1's regardless of a re-release. The last one to have 4 #1's in it's original form was also the last one to have 4 #1's by a female: Mariah's debut album.

Gaga will probably be back in the positive gains tomorrow for airplay.
I am stunned at how well Katy Perry is doing on sales with ET. I just don't get how it happened so suddenly without much airplay or a video. It's like they flipped a switch and everyone started buying it. That said, I love the song. It does feel a little weird if Katy actually manages 4 #1s -- such a rare feat from an album and she's far from a musical legend.
I certainly wouldn't mind if Cee-Lo snuck in a week at #1 but I think he may lose out by a hair once again, like he did with Crazy.

I don't really think Usher was either.

It's remarkable. And good point about Usher and Mariah...

I will be astonished if Katy actually manages to get 4 #1's from the same album. This era has been so huge for her! Her album sales need a lot of work though.

I was a bit skeptical about E.T reaching #1, but now that it's already #3 in iTunes I don't really know anymore. What was the last album to have 4 #1's? Confessions? What was the last album to have 4 #1's without a re-release? What was the last album by a female to have 4 #1's? You are correct about "Confessions" being the last album to have 4 #1's regardless of a re-release. The last one to have 4 #1's in it's original form was also the last one to have 4 #1's by a female: Mariah's debut album. I would also give a special mention to Janet Jackson. She was in the midst of 4 #1s from one album (Rhythm Nation) as Mariah began her streak. "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" gave her a fourth chart-topper from one album just a few months before Mariah did the same with "I Don't Wanna Cry."

I know that Crazy stalled at 2, but how close was it from the top in points? Did it get screwed like lady Antebellum did when Ruse Boy's airplay exploded? Or was there a huge gap in points that it wasn't even close?
