The acts with the most No. 2 hits on the Hot 100, without ever reaching No. 1, is Creedence Clearwater Revival, with five. I don't think thr lack of No. 1 hits has impacted CCR's standing too much. :)

In second place is Blood, Sweat and Tears, with three No. 2 hits and no No. 1 peaks.

En Vogue also had three #2 hits: "Hold On," "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)," and "Don't Let Go (Love)"

I remember being SO frustrated that "My Lovin'" didn't hit number one. That was my jam back in 92.

Clay Aiken's "This Is The Night" was the last song to debut at #1 and hold for more than a week. Two weeks in June and July 2003.

That said I think Gaga could possibly even hold at #1 for a third week.

Exactly. 3 days of sales last week. Full week of sales this week. If she didn't have bigger numbers that song would have been a sure bet for a big flop.

8. Justin Bieber featuring Jaden Smith, "Never Say Never." The song jumps from #25 to #8 in its ninth week. This is Bieber's second top 10 hit; Smith's first. Digital sales rank: #4 (199K).

9. Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E, "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)." The song drops from #6 to #9 in its 13th week. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #19 (92K).

10. Wiz Khalifa, "Black And Yellow." The former #1 song drops from #4 to #10 its 20th week. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (129K).

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold 509,000 copies in its first full week of release, a 14% increase over its initial, three-day total of 448,000. That gives it a 10-day total of 957K. Only one song in digital history has sold more copies in its first two weeks. Flo Rida's "Right Round" sold 1,096,000 in its first two weeks in February 2009.

The Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" is in third place for greatest sales after two weeks (804K). A pair of Eminem hits round out the top five: "Crack A Bottle" (a collabo with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent) (674K) and "Love The Way You Lie" (featuring Rihanna) (621K).

"Born This Way" is the first song to enter the Hot 100 at #1 and hold that position for a second week since Clay Aiken's "This Is The Night" in 2003. In the years since then, seven songs have debuted at #1, only to be bounced from the top spot in their second week: Fantasia's "I Believe," Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven," Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud" (all of which were American Idol coronation songs), Britney Spears' "3," Eminem's "Not Afraid," Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" and Spears' "Hold It Against Me."

Madonna's "Express Yourself," to which "Born This Way" bears more than a passing resemblance, didn't quite made #1. It spent two weeks at #2 in July 1989 (when Gaga was three years old).

Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" finally cracks the top five in its 26th week on the Hot 100. (It jumps from #7 to #2 in the wake of Green's Grammy performance with Gwyneth Paltrow.) It's the first song to take this long to break into the top five since Train's "Hey, Soul Sister," which also broke through in its 26th week, nearly a year ago. "F**k You (Forget You)" sold 412K copies this week. Only one other song that had been on the chart so long has ever sold as many copies. "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga featuring Colby O'Donis sold 419K in its 26th week.

And yes, by jumping to #2, "F**k You (Forget You)" ties P!nk's "F**kin' Perfect," which reached #2 three weeks ago, as the highest-charting hit ever with "the F word" in its title.

The Glee version of "Forget You," spotlighting Paltrow, re-enters the Hot 100 at #90. It peaked at #11 in November.

"Never Say Never" by Justin Bieber featuring Jaden Smith jumps from #25 to #8 in its ninth week. It's Bieber's second top 10 hit, following "Baby" (featuring Ludacris).

Another Bieber hit, "Born To Be Somebody," debuts at #74, while yet another, "U Smile," re-enters at #94. Two Glee renditions of Bieber oldies also chart this week: "Baby" bows at #47. "Somebody To Love" debuts at #62.

Jaden Smith is the second offspring of Will Smith and Jada Pickett Smith to land a top 15 hit in the past four months. Willow's "Whip My Hair" peaked at #11 in October. (That sassy single re-enters the Hot 100 at #100 this week.)

Shameless Plug: On Friday, I'll have a Chart Watch Extra in which I look at parents and children who have each had top 10 hits on Billboard's pop chart. Jaden Smith is just 12, which makes him the youngest of these "second-generation stars" to land a top 10 hit. Will Smith was 23 when he first cracked the top 10 in July 1991 with D.J. Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's "Summertime." He has since amassed four top 10 hits on his own: "Men In Black," "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," "Wild Wild West" and "Switch."

The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" dives from #9 to #36, ending a 10-week week in the top 10. The group's new song, "Just Can't Get Enough," debuts at #92. Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" dips from #10 to #11, ending a five-week run in the top 10.

Two songs by Mumford & Sons crack the top 50 this week in the wake of the band's game-changing performance on the Grammys. "The Cave" vaults from #68 to #27 in its third week. "Little Lion Man" re-enters the chart at #45. This is the latter song's 22nd week on the chart. "Little Lion Man" originally peaked at #61, which, until this week, was the highest position the band had ever reached on the Hot 100. Things are moving very fast for the band.

"E.T." by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, the fourth single from Teenage Dream, re-enters the chart at #28. The song originally debuted and peaked at #42 in August. The first three singles from the Grammy-nominated album all reached #1.


"Backseat" by New Boyz featuring Cataracs & Dev bows at #37. Cataracs & Dev backed Far*East Movement on its chart-topping "Like A G6."


Two more Glee renditions debut in the middle of the chart, which puts them far higher than the original recordings ever climbed. The Glee version of My Chemical Romance's "Sing" bows at #49. The original peaked at #92. The Glee take on the Rent song "Take Me Or Leave Me" bows at #51. The movie soundtrack version by Idina Menzel and Tracie Thoms bubbled under the chart at #125 in 2005.


Chris Young's "Tomorrow" bows at #86. The country singer was the winner on the fourth season of TV's Nashville Star in 2006.


Adele's "Someone Like You" vaults from #47 to #1 in the U.K. It's her first #1 in her home country. Adele's 2008 breakthrough hit, "Chasing Pavements," and her other current hit, "Rolling In The Deep," both reached #2 in the U.K. "Chasing Pavements" also became a top 30 hit on the Hot 100 and brought Adele a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Song Scorecard: "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" by Usher featuring Pitbull tops the 3 million mark in paid downloads this week. It's the second 3-million seller for both artists. Usher's "OMG" (featuring will.i.am) has sold 3,957,000 copies. Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It" (which features Pitbull) has sold 3,197,000.

Ke$ha's "Take It Off" tops the 2 million mark in paid downloads this week. It's her fifth 2 million-seller. It follows "TiK ToK" (5,633,000), "We R Who We R" (2,914,000), "Your Love Is My Drug" (2,756,000) and "Blah, Blah, Blah" (featuring 3OH!3) (2,074,000).


Allen Toussaint, Leon Russell, Garth Brooks, John Bettis and the team of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Toussaint was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He received a Grammy Trustees Award two years ago. Russell was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Both that honor and this one seem to be largely the result of Elton John's campaign to get some late-career recognition for his early idol.

The versatile Bettis has written top 10 hits for the Carpenters, the Pointer Sisters, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Whitney Houston. Steinberg & Kelly have written #1 hits for Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Heart, Whitney Houston and the Bangles.

The Big Apple: This year marked the second time that a New York anthem has lost the Grammy for Record of the Year. The Jay-Z/Alicia Keys smash "Empire State Of Mind" lost to Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now." Thirty years ago, Frank Sinatra's "Theme From New York, New York" lost to Christopher Cross' "Sailing." At least Jay-Z and Keys won a performance Grammy (Best Rap/Sung Collaboration). Sinatra lost in his performance category (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male), too.

Quiz Answer: Hillary Scott, who won five Grammys this year as part of Lady Antebellum, is the daughter of Linda Davis, who won a Grammy for "Does He Love You," her 1993 collabo with Reba McEntire. (It won for Best Country Vocal Collaboration.)

Idol helped several other acts put up big numbers, too, especially those acts that also performed their hits on the Grammy Awards.

Eh? Can you read? Where does it imply that? The point was that nobody should have been expecting sales less than last week. 4 additional days of sales compared to last week pretty much guaranteed that it would match or exceed last week.

Expect to see sales fall next week as it would then be 7 days vs 7 days.
