BEEN DOWN SO LONG, LOOKS LIKE UP TO US Adele Back at #1 as Industry Posts Fourth Straight Week Topping Last Year
March 16, 2011
There’s a ray of hope in the music industry this week.
For the first time since 2004, the record business has posted four straight sales weeks that have topped last year’s results.
The market was down 2% vs. last week and up 2% vs. same week last year and now down just 7% to date. After several years of double-digit losses, that qualifies as good news, folks.
Meanwhile, it’s back to the present. Adele has a shot at returning to #1 after being displaced by Lupe Fiasco last week, where she will face a formidable challenge from Geffen’s Rise Against, the Chicago punk-rockers whose new album, Endgame, their first since 2008’s Appeal to Reason, is looking at first-week sales in the 80-90k region. Appeal to Reason debuted at #3 in Oct. 2008, with 65k. Adele has topped the U.K. charts for seven consecutive weeks, and sold more than a million copies in Britain.
The only other album of note is Interscope’s Travis Barker with his solo debut, Give the Drummer Some, which is targeted in the 20-25k range.
Hitting stores next Tuesday (3/22) are a couple of albums which should do up to 200k, according to pundits, in Arista/RMG’s Jennifer Hudson and Jive/ZLG’s Chris Brown.

So it looks like Adele could make it to the six figures again next week

JHUD could hit 200k thatd be huge for her. and lets see if chris's album buying fanbase is back

Wow @ 200K for JHud (Possibly). That would be quite impressive.

I personally think people are overestimating Jenny, but we'll see...

Her last album opened with a little over 200k, so I'm not surprised.

But "Where You At" isn't bigger than "Spotlight" was when her debut was released. I say 140-150K at most.

Plus, she had lots of Oscar hype back then.

And this week last year the #1 album sold a few thousand copies short of 100k so looks like we have another chance in improving year-to-year sales next week

Stoked for Adele, this is very impressive. Potentially 750k+ in four weeks.

I hope Jennifer comes out on top. I all but forgot she had a music career.

It would be cool if RA had an outside chance at the top. Too bad their albums have become less interesting, and by that I mean the last two.

Jennifer may not have the hits this time around but she has some hype. She's been very visible (Oprah, Grammy's, Weight Watchers campaign which was a HUGE boost) so I wouldn't be surprised with that. Chris should do well too.

I just hope chris does above 150k. Anything higher than that will be a bonus.

Adele returns to the top next week with her distributor, Sony Music, having a shot at six titles in the Top 10. Geffen's Rise Against looks solid for a #2 debut with the Chicago punk-rockers' best ever sales week. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend: Adele (XL/Columbia) 95-105k *Rise Against (Geffen) 85-90k Lupe Fiasco (Atlantic) 50-55k Glee Cast Volume 5 (Columbia) 45-50k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 40-45k Avril Lavigne (RCA/RMG) 30-35k Justin Bieber Never Say Never (Island/IDJ) 30-35 Now 37 (Capitol/EMI) 28-32k Marsha Ambrosius (J/RMG) 28-32k Sara Evans (RCA Nashville) 24-27k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 24-27k *Travis Barker (Interscope) 24-27k Nicki Minaj (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 24-27k Pink (LaFace/JLG) 22-25k Justin Bieber My World 2.0 (Island/IDJ) 22-25k *Debuts (3/17p) www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi

Guess Avril is finished. Shame, the album has a few good tracks.

It would be great if Adele managed another week about 100K.

I think Adele is popular enough to appear on Oprah and American Idol. Her team needs to pull some strings to make this album sell more hugely.

Guess Avril is finished. Shame, the album has a few good tracks. She doesn't have a smash to save her sales for this week and probably next couple weeks. The fate of this era depends on how far WTH can go on airplay when it finishes and the second single. Not depends on next few updates. Wish You Were Here debuted at #99 on Hot without any promo for that song. I believe if she chooses it as the second single, it'll do fine. Otherwise, look like she'll be at #6 on Top 200 this week despite the low number. It's not that bad

After the low debut, her only chance was to get low decreases, but she's looking to get a pretty standard drop, so... I don't WYWH is as radio friendly as WTH.

Pretty standard second week drop for Avril (assuming she sticks to the projection). Obviously the current plan isn't working so either promote or send out a second single and promote that

Adele's album is performing so phenomenally! It's great to see an artist perform so well based entirely on her raw vocal and songwriting talents.
As for Avril's album, I'm surprised by how poorly WTH and her album performed. I didn't expect sales weeks that would rival her best, but the song is catchy and a Max Martin production with a well-known artist like Avril sounds like a recipe for success on paper. Perhaps it just sounds too much like music from The Best Damn Thing, but it's still surprising.

Avril's album has sold over 400k worldwide in two weeks. So yea she's so finished... hey buddy, do some research. The first week was Japan sales alone (135k). The second week is worldwide sales (242k). So, basically 400K is from a debut week (second in Japan). The album was released in Japan a week before the rest of the world On the other hand, mediatraffic doesn't count the rest of Asia besides Japan and South Korea where is ridicously huge. She sold more than 10K in Taiwan and also tops Hong Kong and Singapore markets !

But you're right, it was basically one sales week for the album spread on two calendar weeks.
