You gotta admit, there was a lot of redundancy.

That's true, but now that means less nominations and no one has a chance to sweep really anymore.

I'm all for the change. ONe problem with the Grammy's was there were so many categories. Now only the best will get slot's and they won't have to load certain categories with fillers because they are not able to fill them. Makes everything more competitive and interesting imo.

^But getting rid of the long standing genre categories? We might as well lump Best Actor & Actress together at the Oscars while we're at it.

Also I can see Britney Spears having an Album of the Year nominations. AOTY, Pop Vocal Album, Dance Recording. why on earth would u say that?

That's true, but now that means less nominations and no one has a chance to sweep really anymore. No its still possible for instance Beyonce could win. Rb Performance,Pop Performance,Rb Song, Rb Album, SOTY,and AOTY Which is almost what she did at the last award show. Grammy favorites will remain but less filler nominees. People like Rihanna, Katy, Britney, and Kesha will all be in the Dance categories if they want to win. In most categories the women will dominate except for Country... Where it will be Carrie or Miranda and all the usual country males.

I don't like separating the female and male categories for the vocal performances but woah this will be tough come nomination time and somehow exciting as well. The Solo Pop Performance will be intense!
Just noticed that they cut out SOLO ROCK performance too! :o

I wish they had a "Best Collaboration Performance" like, not in a specific genre, just general. So any genre could be nominated/win it.

^But getting rid of the long standing genre categories? We might as well lump Best Actor & Actress together at the Oscars while we're at it. Exactly. This totally ignores that fact that men and woman generally have technically different voices. Holding those vast, sonically different instruments to the same standard is just plain stupid. On a pop vocal album, a male who is a bass should not be equally compared to a woman singing as a sorprano or vice versa.

On a pop vocal album, a male who is a bass should not be equally compared to a woman singing as a sorprano or vice versa. The "Vocal" categories have not been about who sang the best for a while (not sure they ever were). It was really just a "best solo performance" category.

I don't really agree w/mashing the male & female categories together.
& whoever said Britney may actually get an AOTY nom, stop smoking whatever you taking. The Grammys is not here for her.

Rock Bands should Feel the most aggrieved by this cut. they now have to compete with grammy favs Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and John Mayer for "Rock Performance"

I have to agree with mostly everyone. Getting rid of the gender based categories is an awful idea. So disappointed they did that.

The most she could've received under the old format was 5 anyway (ROTY, SOTY, AOTY, Female Pop vocal, Pop Album). She'll still probably earn all five of those nominations. Right now I'd put her as the early favorite to take Pop Performance and Pop Album. Gaga will probably end up being biggest competition there, along with perhaps Beyonce in the performance category.

LOL I guess Justin Timberlake will never win again another Pop Vocal Performance award. He doesn't have any chance against the pop divas.

This is the best thing that could ever happen to the Grammys. Less filler, actual competition and suspense.

getting rid of the gender-based category was the worst decision ever, really bummed about that.

Well, they cut the number of awards women can win in half. Congratulations.

I can see Gaga submitting her best single & the album to dance this year...that way, Pop = Adele, Dance = Gaga
Can Tha Carter IV compete with MBDTF?
I still don't understand why Best Pop Song doesn't exist. Makes zero sense.

Fantasia, Swizz, and Bruno better be glad this change wasn't in effect last year.
However, I don't see them eliminating the gender-based categories forever.

Yeah - Taylor, Kanye & Adele seem like easy frontrunners. Gaga will most likely be as well. The 5th will be rock - Radiohead, Foo Fighters (early buzz is good, I think), Strokes...isn't Coldplay supposed to release something this year?

I feel like Taylor Swift wont get nominated. I have a weird feelings Rihanna or Britney Spears will take her spot. I called Katy Perry last year. It seems like Britney could own the charts this summer

It seems like Britney could own the charts this summer I still think she'll get a nod. She went 3x Platinum in what -- 2 months, including Platinum in its first 7 days, no? The Grammys will eat those sales up in exchange for some nominations, and potentially, wins. Anyways, now that they cut the categories in half, it changes everything. And, judging by how male-dominated Country music still is, the women will have to work their asses off a million times harder to get a nod.
