ADELE’S A DOUBLE MILLIONAIRE 21 Returns to #1, Will Top Million Next Week, as 19 Passes Platinum This Week
April 6, 2011
Adele’s a double winner this week.
The U.K. songstress, with the year’s top-selling album at the Q1 pole with XL/Columbia’s 21, will see the album go over a million this week as she’ll return to the #1 spot on the HITS sales chart. Her debut album, 19, which has returned to the charts, also hit platinum territory this week. She’s a shoe-in for multiple Grammy nominations, even with fewer categories next year. The only other candidate, the benefit album Songs For Japan, is hitting in physical format on Sony Music, but as the previously digital-only compilation is just now hitting retail, it’s still a little too early to gauge how well it will do.
The biggest debut of the week will be A&M/Octone’s shock-rockers Hollywood Undead, whose sophomore album, American Tragedy, was made after the departure of lead singer/bassist Deuce. The album should do between 60-65k after its 2008 debut, Swan Songs, sold a cumulative total of more than 500k.
Sumerian’s Asking Alexandria, a U.K. metalcore band with roots in Dubai, but currently based in Yorkshire, will see their sophomore album, Reckless and Relentless, the follow-up to 2009’s Stand Up and Scream, debut with between 25-30k.
429/Macro-Biotic Records artist Robbie Robertson, legendary member of The Band, returns with a critically well-received solo album, How to Become Clairvoyant, which should to 20-25k, thanks to an Amazon daily special. There’s also an exclusive Best Buy deluxe edition with demos of five of the album tracks.
Walt Disney’s Daft Punk soundtrack, Tron: Legacy Reconstructed, is on target for between 17-20k.
E1 rapper Jim Jones makes his label debut with Capo, which should do 15-18k, while veteran ‘80s Minneapolis R&B group (and Prince contemporaries) Mint Condition, also on the former Koch label, will debut with between 12-15k on their album, 7…
The market was up 2% vs. last week, and, for the first time in six weeks, down 3% vs. same week last year and still down 5% year to date. Keep in mind that last year at this time was Easter, usually a robust sales weekend, so down only 3% isn’t bad.
You may now go back to bench-pressing Kirstie Alley on Dancing with the Stars.

Hopefully Britney won't see a 70-something% decline this week, I expect around 80k though.

A 70% dip would be roughly 83,000 (going by SoundScan numbers).

I was hoping for a fairly reasonable drop second week (60%) but I am assuming that is pretty much shot since Adele will sell probably another 95-105K at #1. Looks like the drop will be closer to 65-75%.

Adele is monster!!! Top selling album of the year??? Or Gaga will take the crown? Interesting! :o I hope Britney will have a typical 65-66% second week drop.

Can you imagine if Adele gets another hit? She will seriously be top 10 through the end of the year if promo/airplay work out for her. Pretty amazing, really.

Depend if you mean billboard year than Taylor's got it. Calendar year either Taylor, if her sales pick up, nicki if she stays consistent, or adele at this point. I think beyond might be a bigger threat than Gaga. This year I think the top 5 year end could very well be all females.

She will get another hit, she is riding a huge momentum wave right now. "Set fire to the rain" or even "turning tables" could be a hit. For now rolling in the deep continues to explode so it will keep her album selling for a while. Then of course there will be AMAs and Grammys to keep this album selling. I think 2 Million + is a given at this point. Maybe more ?

I also think she will be a big holiday seller-seems like the type that usually is.

Looks like Britney is gonna have a steep second week drop. Blackout sold 86k in its second week I believe so I'm expecting around 80k for Femme Fatale.
Too bad this album wasn't released in the holiday season; it would've given the album a much better chance of getting to a million.

Another week at number one gives Adele four weeks so far this year, which ties her with Taylor Swift for the most weeks logged at number one. Big releases from Foo Fighters and Alison Krauss next week will likely push her from the top though.

Would a release in the holiday season matter all that much for an act like Spears, though, whose fanbase rabidly purchases her albums? perhaps less so than some others. Granted, Circus' release in December- one of the top sales months of the year- didn't hurt, but I'm not so sure debut sales would have been all THAT much higher, under the same circumstances leading up to this album's release.
Adele's momentum probably will continue pretty strongly, now that radio is starting to open its arms to her.

How is Adele going to #1 ??? Did we get some figures for next week? One day estimates, and their usually 95% right with their predictions for #1(although the amount is usually off). They do it every week ???

I hope "21" will cross 100k next week :) This album will definitely have legs. Glad to see that we will have a 1 million seller at this time of the year :)

Adele's momentum probably will continue pretty strongly, now that radio is starting to open its arms to her. Of course it matters. It wouldn't have been near Circus but it would still have higher sales, and, as someone already said, a chance for 1m. If the drops continue at the same rate than Blackout, it won't reach 1m.

I think Foo Fighters are likely to get to number one in two weeks. Unless Adele's sales respond sharply to increased radio spins or any scheduled TV appearances, Foo Fighters would have to sell comfortable over 100k to get to number one, which I think will happen. They'll have to hold off Adele and Alison, two very strong contenders, but I really think they'll do it.

Yea, and I think Rolling in the Deep hasn't even started to truly pay off for the album as it's still building (although already a bonafide hit!)

Adele is so phenomenal. I'm sure her sales have a lot to do with Starbucks, Borders, and Best Buy constantly playing her cd--and of course word of mouth.

^ Not to forget that RITD is smashing a lot now So happy for Adele I really hope the album manages to sell 3mil+ in the long run. I can see that happening too if her sales stay this consistant and she sells well over the holiday period later this year and wins a grammy or two next year (with a performance on the grammys too). When is the Adele episode of glee airing btw? I think that could have a really positive effect for her album (although glee will most likely slaughter her songs).

It would be nice to see the Foo Fighters finally get a number one album, after so many huge records and coming so close before.
Also, Mint Condition was a 90s group, not 80s...why reference a time period at all if you're not going to check it?

Foo Fighters has SNL scheduled for this week! I hope on the next week more Tv shows!
That can helps a lot, especially for rock bands!
