It just looks pathetic when an artist is publicly pressed about getting number 1's. Keep a detached air of indifference, yo. I don't think its pathetic. Not many artists have 10#1's on the Hot 100. Rihanna is going for it. The marketing ploy isn't pathetic; this is a business, her management should be doing everything they can to maximize profits. Her personally be so extra about snatchin' number ones on twitter is pretty pathetic though.

We really can't speak on Rihanna's personal motivations, while her tweets are made to appear spontaneous, I'm sure her label considers having an audience like that a potential marketing assest. Ten #1's is a landmark occasion for any artist and I believe any label or artist that close would take similar measures. Due to the song's content, it's not as though she has had the opportunity to promote in a more typical fashion. If they feel posting a link a few times on twitter is gonna further ensure it's chances, who's it gonna hurt? The fans that are following her that want to see her at #1? The person that truly wasn't aware of the remix and has now purchased it?

Well, outside of a few singles, RiRi doesn't burn up the critical lists, so of course she'd be psyched for the charts. :) But, it looks like it's becoming a preoccupation- that has happened for some acts when they attain a level of chart success- it's like they live and breathe the charts, as evidenced by their comments. Not wasting any opportunities, I see ;) May I remind you of a certain dream a diva once had and publicly spoke about regarding chart positions? YAASSSS www.youtube.com/watch?v=amQuwVgq9MkLOL.

The only high profile female artists that probably care less about chart positions is Britney. I don't even think girl knows she has a single out

Like I said, slw, any mainstream act obviously likes to do well- they wouldn't make mainstream music if they didn't. And Madonna is no exception- like duh, a woman whose albums have sold more than 200 million copies and who's enjoyed huge singles success isn't going to enjoy that? But I don't think anyone can say that Madonna's interest in the charts approaches the level of some others. She's stated on more than one occasion that she likes merging art and commerce, which she's done quite nicely. I don't know if RiRi necessarily makes music with the charts in mind, as she doesn't have much of a role in crafting the music. But, some of her singles have been less mainstream than others, which isn't a bad thing. Zach, I'm guessing that "All I Have" was Lopez's last top 20 airplay hit?

In all likelihood, most mainstream acts do enjoy doing well. It's one thing to enjoy doing well, but it's another matter when doing well is what dictates one's music-making and bulk of career. If they do care about their success then rightfully so otherwise they would have never signed a record deal, I guess. It is good to have ambitions, you know. :) I never believe anyone that says they do it just for music and art, without seeking fame, success and money. Oh and my remark about the dream, was a joke. I wouldn't blame Madonna if she cared about her success and I'm pretty sure she does. Maybe not publicly. :)

^Maybe it's really not a widespread issue and Mimi Carey has the lock on it, I dunno. It's true, that she has no rivals in terms of enthusiasm for the charts/sales. And she's clearly stated that she makes music for the fans, based on what they want to/like to hear. Then again, few acts have the kind of relationship with the fans that Mimi does. So, putting that aside... In this day and age, with collaborations and such becoming as common as they are, some acts are racking up the hits like nobody's business- and RiRi is the best example of that. I mean, has there been a break since 2005 where there has not been a RiRi single at radio, whether her own or as a featured act? The girl and her label clearly are on some kind of mission.

Everyone envies Mariah's relationship with the fans, it's beautiful :) And no, no break for Rihanna. Maybe a few months between the 2nd album and 'Umbrella'. She has constantly been on radio from 'Russian Roulette' to 'S&M' though. :o

RS101 and WTC didn't appear on Radio Songs, and she isn't credited on AOTL.

And their chances of doing so decrease every year they get older.

I'd say anything can happen with the right song and marketing. Madonna got really close with '4 Minutes'.

Cher was the exception not the rule, and where would Jlo or her song be without all the hype she's getting from Idol? Neither Madonna or Mariah have a weekly vehicle to promote themselves like she does now. And I didn't say it couldn't happen, I just don't think it's likely.

I predicted last year that Rihanna will have 11-12 #1 singles by the end of 2011. She's right on track and the irony of having her very first single shut out at the top spot by a Mariah song lol.

If/When Rihanna hits 10 #1 hits on the Hot 100 she will join a very small and elite community that also includes: Stevie Wonder The Beatles The Supremes Michael Jackson George Michael Madonna Whitney Houston Janet Jackson Mariah Carey *If you were to include pre-Hot 100 charts used by Billboard as well, Elvis Presley would also be on this list. Pretty sure you meant Michael Jackson, not George Michael. 20 The Beatles 18 Mariah Carey 17 Elvis Presley 13 Michael Jackson 12 The Supremes 12 Madonna 11 Whitney Houston 10 Stevie Wonder 10 Janet Jackson While it's a small list and all of these artists were obviously hugely successful, people are talking like Rihanna doesn't belong on the list when there are other artists on the list who have their detractors as well. Elvis didn't write most of his hits. The Supremes didn't write any of theirs. Whitney Houston wrote none of her's. Mariah, Whitney, and Janet aren't exactly critical darlings. Madonna only started receiving major critical success after she scored 11 of her 12 #1 hits. The major thing separating Rihanna from the rest of these artists is that they've all been around for over 20 years, and the last artist to join this list was Janet Jackson over 10 years ago. Who's to say Rihanna won't be? She's been around for about 6 years now. Mariah scored her 10th #1 only 5 years into her career. Critics were scoffing when Mariah passed Madonna's #1 total with "Honey". People were up in arms again when she tied Elvis with "Don't Forget About Us" and then passed him with "Touch My Body". Now people are saying Rihanna doesn't belong on this list alongside people like Mariah.
