I predicted last year that Rihanna will have 11-12 #1 singles by the end of 2011. She's right on track and the irony of having her very first single shut out at the top spot by a Mariah song lol. Why don't we wait until she officially has her 10th #1 song before we start talking about numbers 11 and 12.

No, you, don't, Beysus. :) That certain diva realized how ridiculous it was that she had that dream- she was like, "THIS is what I'm dreaming about." Back in 1996 (a few months after that dream story), she also claimed to not know that she had the most hits or whatever when Bryant Gumbel mentioned it (which I don't know if I believe), and that she thought Whitney had passed her. Gumbel said she was closing in fast and she's like, "Who cares, it's just a bunch of lists, what do they mean..." He also asked her if she cared if this female or that female passed her in hits, and she said no- that they can't do what she does (which I gather she meant in terms of performing and provocation in her work on a range of topics). In all likelihood, most mainstream acts do enjoy doing well. It's one thing to enjoy doing well, but it's another matter when doing well is what dictates one's music-making and bulk of career. Madonna stopped caring when she no longer was the top female on that list, or the moment she knew didn't have chance. So she then started twisting how she felt about the charts. To say that Madonna never cared or was hungry to top the charts is ridiculous.

She'll pass Mariah by 30. Or she'll suddenly stop having #1 songs long before that. Sometimes, there's little more to having #1 songs than just plain luck, and sometimes it just runs out. Happens to the best of them.

If/When Rihanna hits 10 #1 hits on the Hot 100 she will join a very small and elite community that also includes: Stevie Wonder The Beatles The Supremes Michael Jackson George Michael Madonna Whitney Houston Janet Jackson Mariah Carey *If you were to include pre-Hot 100 charts used by Billboard as well, Elvis Presley would also be on this list. Pretty sure you meant Michael Jackson, not George Michael. 20 The Beatles 18 Mariah Carey 17 Elvis Presley 13 Michael Jackson 12 The Supremes 12 Madonna 11 Whitney Houston 10 Stevie Wonder 10 Janet Jackson While it's a small list and all of these artists were obviously hugely successful, people are talking like Rihanna doesn't belong on the list when there are other artists on the list who have their detractors as well. Elvis didn't write most of his hits. The Supremes didn't write any of theirs. Whitney Houston wrote none of her's. Mariah, Whitney, and Janet aren't exactly critical darlings. Madonna only started receiving major critical success after she scored 11 of her 12 #1 hits. The major thing separating Rihanna from the rest of these artists is that they've all been around for over 20 years, and the last artist to join this list was Janet Jackson over 10 years ago. Who's to say Rihanna won't be? She's been around for about 6 years now. Mariah scored her 10th #1 only 5 years into her career. Critics were scoffing when Mariah passed Madonna's #1 total with "Honey". People were up in arms again when she tied Elvis with "Don't Forget About Us" and then passed him with "Touch My Body". Now people are saying Rihanna doesn't belong on this list alongside people like Mariah. It's not so much a matter of certain artists not belonging on the list as it is the feeling that not all artists who have 10 or more #1 songs are necessarily created equal, you know?

And completely didn't give a sh*t after she flopped with american Life. It's nice, but we know she doens't think about them. Madonna is untouchable. Those Top 10 hits are dare i say immaculate. lol.

I remember an MTV interview she did when she complained about Boyz II Men "always hogging the top position. Boyz II Men and that damn Bodyguard soundtrack!" And those were her exact words.

#1 doesn't mean anything.. Mariah didn't became a legend because she has 18 #1. Same with madonna, whitney, michael jackson. Their music, voice makes them legends and untouchable.
Anyway y'all talking about rihanna breaking mariah's record. What about Usher. Ever though about him breaking madonna, whitney or mariah record. He had 9 #1.

George Michael has (correction) 7 #1 hits in the US credited to him as a solo artist. I Knew You Were Waiting For Me Faith Father Figure One More Try Monkey Praying For Time Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me 3 of his #1 hits in the US were credited to Wham! Wake Me Up Before You Go Go Everything She Wants Careless Whisper Not sure how they got him with 10+ even if they were adding the solo and group songs together, although they didn't do that with Diana Ross and Paul McCartney so that makes it even more confusing.

Anyway y'all talking about rihanna breaking mariah's record. What about Usher. Ever though about him breaking madonna, whitney or mariah record. He had 9 #1. Rihanna has racked up 9 #1 in the 6 years she's been around. Usher took about 10 years to amass that many #1s and was already in the business for almost a decade before he even had his first #1. He's also almost 10 years older than Rihanna. History would indicate that Rihanna would have more of a chance given her age and the frequency with which she hits #1. Usher's #1s were more spread out and many were confined to the Confessions album. The artists on this list racked up the majority of their #1s within a relatively small time period in their career. Here's a list with periods split into about 5 year sections and how many #1s each artist scored within that period. Elvis is not included because some of his pre-date the Hot 100 and some of his pre-Hot 100 #1s were double A-sides which makes things complicated. Child stars like Stevie, Michael, and Janet who originally debuted at a very young age peaked later in their careers when they matured. Michael's #1s are actually relatively spread out. Anyway, it is likely that Rihanna is at the peak of her career now and is not going to spend the next 10 years racking up 2-3 #1 hits a year. The Beatles (first #1 hit in 1962) 1962-1965: 11 1966-1970: 9 1971-present: 0 Mariah Carey (first #1 hit in 1990) 1990-1994: 8 1995-1999: 6 2000-2004: 1 2005-2009: 3 2010-present: 0 Michael Jackson (first #1 hit in 1972) 1971-1974: 1 1975-1979: 2 1980-1984: 2 1985-1989: 5 1990-1994: 1 1995-1999: 1 2000-2010: 0 The Supremes (first #1 hit in 1964) 1961-1964: 3 1965-1969: 9 1970-present: 0 Madonna (first #1 hit in 1984) 1983-1987: 6 1988-1992: 4 1993-1997: 1 1998-2002: 1 2003-present: 0 Whitney Houston (first #1 hit in 1985) 1985-1989: 7 1990-1994: 3 1995-1999: 1 2000-present: 0 Stevie Wonder (first #1 hit in 1963) 1962-1966: 1 1967-1971: 0 1972-1976: 4 1977-1981: 1 1982-1986: 4 1987-present: 0 Janet Jackson (first #1 hit in 1986) 1982-1986: 1 1987-1991: 4 1992-1996: 2 1997-2001: 3 2002-present: 0

George Michael had 8 #1 songs.
Careless Whisper - Wham! feat George Michael I Knew You Were Waiting For Me - Aretha Franklin & George Michael Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me - GM & Elton John
Because George and Wham! were interchangeable, unlike the Supremes (very high profile group members) they combined their #1 hits to get 10. BTW, Paul McCartney IS combined with Wings and gets 9 #1 songs.
The Beatles and all their members are separate

I've never seen George Michael listed with those other artists before. I don't think Wham! and George Michael are as interchangeable as say "The Supremes" and "Diana Ross & The Supremes". To me that would be like adding No Doubt's hits to Gwen Stefani's solo hits to come up with her total. She's the only vocalist in the group and most people can't even name a single other member of No Doubt, but No Doubt and Gwen Stefani are not looked at as interchangeable artists.

Yes- Madge did joke about Boyz II Men and The Bodyguard on that MTV special. She was laughing about it; all in good fun. As for when she "stopped caring" (which I don't think she's ever really done- she would not have collaborated with the Timbas if that were the case), she made those comments back in 1996, when she still had the most Hot 100 No. 1 hits. Bryant Gumbel didn't even say "No. 1 hits" when he brought it up to her, but just "hits."
As for when she racked up critical love, she steadily got more and more leading up to Like a Prayer, and from 1990-on, she's enjoyed a helluva lot- The Immaculate Collection really set things in motion, and things really hit their stride with Ray of Light. There's not a shortage of critical love to come for her or her music, that's for sure- she was not one of the few no-brainer first-year-eligible inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for nothing, after all.
RE George Michael- Joel Whitburn had combined the Wham! hits with his solo entries. Billboard does not lump them together, I believe.

BTW I DO have faith in Rihanna's career. That's why I expect her to pass Mariah in #1's in the first place.

Not following. Anyway, I hope "E.T." stays on top this week. Such a hot song to jam out to.

Billboard doesn't combine Wham! and George Michael (Whitburn may have done that arbitrarily). They also only don't normally combine Presley's pre-Hot 100 no. 1s (although they acknowledge them from time to time). Here's the list posted when Rihanna achieved her 9th no. 1: 20, the Beatles 18, Mariah Carey 13, Michael Jackson 12, Madonna 12, the Supremes 11, Whitney Houston 10, Janet Jackson 10, Stevie Wonder 9, Bee Gees 9, Elton John 9, Paul McCartney 9, Rihanna 9, Usher www.billboard.com/column/weekly-chart-notes-rihanna-gwyneth-paltrow-1004130545.story

As a big George Michael fan, I was always happy that Whitburn combines him with Wham!, but I agree it is arbitrary, and Billboard has never counted those two extra #1s.

I just wish so many of Madonna's songs hadn't peaked at #2. Doesn't she hold the record on that list above? Yeah, it's really out of control. I also wish "Who's That Girl," and "This Used to Be My Playground weren't #1's and "Into the Groove" and "Erotica" were instead. Everyone knows "Frozen" was jipped the top spot but that Divine song right "Lately"? POS. And all 3 of the big songs from Like a Prayer could easily have been #1's.. In my opinion, Madonna should have AT LEAST all these songs #1. Due to single releases during the weeks, many of her songs were blocked. She should have just as many as Mariah LIKE A VIRGIN MATERIAL GIRL CRAZY FOR YOU INTO THE GROOVE LIVE TO TELL PAPA DON'T PREECH OPEN YOUR HEART LIKE A PRAYER EXPRESS YOURSELF CHERISH VOGUE JUSTIFY MY LOVE EROTICA SECRET TAKE A BOW FROZEN RAY OF LIGHT MUSIC DON'T TELL ME I also believe that THESE songs should be Mariah Carey's #1's: VISION OF LOVE LOVE TAKES TIME SOMEDAY I DON'T WANNA CRY EMOTIONS CAN'T LET GO I'LL BE THERE DREAMLOVER HERO WITHOUT YOU FANTASY ONE SWEET DAY ALWAYS BE MY BABY HONEY BUTTERFLY MY ALL HEARTBREAKER WE BELONG TOGETHER SHAKE IT OFF DON'T FORGET ABOUT US TOUCH MY BODY And what the hell, Janet's ideal #1's: What Have You Done For Me Lately? Nasty When I Think of You Let's Wait Awhile Miss You Much Rhythm Nation Escapade Come Back to Me Love Will Never Do (Without You) That's the Way Love Goes If Again Runaway Together Again I Get Lonely Doesn't Really Matter All for You Someone to Call My Lover The only reason I say anyhing is becasue WITH HOW EASY IT IS for certain artists to debut at #1 and score #1 hit after #1 hit... it's a little odd to see past Divas missing the top spot with some iconic singles.

"Frozen" was blocked by K-Ci and Jojo's "All My Life."
It actually would've been quite the feat for Frozen to peak at #1, considering its airplay peak was 7 and sales peak was 10.

Cher was 52 when she reached #1 with Believe. JLo is 41 and she has a decent chance to go #1 if she performs the song on Idol. I'd say anything can happen with the right song and marketing. Madonna got really close with '4 Minutes'. Cher was the exception not the rule, and where would Jlo or her song be without all the hype she's getting from Idol? Neither Madonna or Mariah have a weekly vehicle to promote themselves like she does now. And I didn't say it couldn't happen, I just don't think it's likely. the smartest ways for them to get a number one would be to have britney, taylor, gaga, or eminem on their track. id say kesha but i think neither of them would let kesha on their track. likley only madonna would alllowd gaga and britney. if mariah wanted contrversy shed have eminem. either way those 4 artists brings huge digital sales.

Number ones are number ones. Yes different chart eras are more conducive towards songs of a certain genre or artist, but there is no way to standardize number ones. We can be subjective and say, "Well 'this song' should've been number one or 'that song' should've never been number one, but what is special about these charts is that they rely entirely on objective data, which is most accurately reflective of popularity.
If "#1 doesn't mean anything," then why engage in a forum about the Billboard Hot 100. Number ones are equally important at the box office as they are on the New York Times Bestsellers' List and the Billboard charts. Very often what elevates any artist (movie or book) from the blurring mass of such is what has made them popular and successful. For Mariah, it may be her vocal theatrics, for Madonna, it may be her boundary-testing music, for Lady Gaga, her theatrical performances, and Rihanna, her genre-bending techniques. To diminish an artist and their contribution to mainstream music with nearly a dozen number ones would be to omit a substantial arc of music history and therefore compromise the legitimacy of these charts (and their roles in popular music).

Thanks for clarifying, I don't know where that poster got their data but Divine's lately hit #1 almost a year later lol. Not to take away anything from Madge but All My Life was a much bigger song.
