From All Access... Mediabase Institutes New Recurrent Rules
Effective this week, MEDIABASE has modified its recurrent rules. On the Top 40, Rhythmic, Urban, Active Rock, and Alternative charts, downtrending songs below #15 are now removed after 20 weeks. On the Hot AC and Triple A chart, downtrending songs below #10 are now removed after 26 weeks, while downtrending songs below #15 are still removed after 20 weeks.www.allaccess.com/Wow! :o This definitely changes things A LOT!

I like this change. The #11 - 20 range gets clogged with months-old hits on the way down a lot so hopefully this will alleviate some of that.

"Bad Romance" will go next week thanks to this rule. If we were still using the other rule, it might stay on the chart for another 2-3 weeks, which is spots that could be taken up by newer songs.

Well I'll be in the minority I don't like the changes because in the end they would be further from reflecting the reality of Pop Radio. It will disguise the staleness not reduce it. Songs will "artificially" be considered top 20 when they may not be as popular A 5 other songs in the chart. Bad Romance will probably still be more popular than Naturally but would be harder to find out. I know there is a ranking including recurrents but that's not the official. I'm more into the old school American Top 40 method. I would have preferred changes in the 20-40 range in that case, since those are less popular (Blah Blah Blah should have been purged instead of Sexy Bitch getting recurrency). Probably this is related to the thought that some radio stations only play a certain song if it enters the top 20. I suppose that would be the most desirable effect of this measure, tho...

Does going recurrent affect how much radios play a song? Will they play it less as it is no longer in top 20?

If a song is no longer relevant on the charts, meaning recurrent, then normally the PD's drop that song in their rotation. Either they play it less or they stop playing it altogether.
So for a song to leave the chart sooner than before now, it would seem to me that the music would be much more fresh cause there's more rotation going on in playlists. I don't know, I guess we'll have to find that one out.

I think Bad Romance might survive due to Bedrock dropping above it; however, YLIMD is closing in. It will be a close, exciting race! :)

I find it interesting how though Xtina just passed Gaga, the latter continues to have a bigger audience and bigger audience updates each day.
The biggest bullet currently belongs to Kesha.

Me neither. I think BR is going to reach recurrency this week even if Young Money drops below Gaga. YLIMD and "Say Aah" will both push it to #16 probably.

I actually don't like this new change. While it might make the newer songs climb up, the older songs won't have much longevity anymore.

That's the downside, but the charts have changed a lot over the years anyway, so it's always dicey to compare and contrast longetivity. It's worth it for getting more turnover in the top 20 & top 40.

Sadly it's all just for show. It's not like radio will stop whoring old songs just cause they've gone recurrent on Mediabase.

I don't like this for two reasons:
One: I feel like radio just keeps reacting to every recurrent rule change by stretching the new rule as far as it can go until it gets changed again - i.e. now songs will start lasting extra weeks in the 11-15 range instead of 16-20.
Two: I feel like this was really done in response to the Alternative chart and NOT anything from the Top 40 chart at all. Songs have been taking forever to leave that chart, and...YES!...spending weeks and weeks in the 16-20 range. So really, Mediabase should've only made the change to that chart and not this one. Granted, Alternative will definitely fall victim to songs lasting in the 11-15 range now, but that kind of happens now anyway, and I don't see that changing. Plus, why should the Pop chart have to suffer because of Alt's pitfalls?

Not as long as the song keeps its bullet. There's no time limit on a song's chart life as long as it stays bulleted, OR, if it loses the bullet but it's at its peak and stays there. (Case in point: "If You Only Knew" on Hot AC.)

The first thing I thought of was that now people have five extra positions to complain about when the AT40 chart gets posted every week.

Well, if you look at it in this way, then there should be no recurrent rule at all, because that would be the only accurate way of showing what all pop stations are spinning, but the thing is, is that the panel is not the whole country. When songs go recurrent, things go erratic. A lot of pop stations in the panel could still be spinning it after it goes recurrent, but stations not on the panel might not (and vise-versa). Currents is different, though. Also, a lot of times, stations put songs into recurrent rotation before it goes recurrent. Really, all the songs in the 11-20 range that were negative were already "recurrent" on many stations. They just weren't recurrent on the actual chart. The only downside is it hinders the longevity of songs. Really, though, longevity based on weeks is not a good representation. A song can spend only 20 weeks on the chart after peaking at #21, and another spent 25 weeks after peeking at #7. After both went recurrent, it is possible the 20 week song had LOTS of recurrent play, while the 25 week song had a quick burn rate and everyone got sick of it, so its recurrent play isn't very great. In the long run, the 20 week song will pass the 25 week song in terms of combined number of spins, which is what we should be judging longevity on, not weeks. There's so many pros to this as well. More songs will get better peaks. MANY, and I mean MANY, stations will not play songs if they are not in the top 40 or the top 20, which is why there were many cases of huge spin gaps between the 40-41 and 20-21 song. This will help more newer songs get more airplay. It could, potentially, help speed up radio a tad bit, which is a HUGE plus, as it is SO FREAKING SLOW lately.

Does anyone have a reliable website that has weekly Mediabase Pop top 50 with all the stats archive? For what I know, this site only goes back to mid-late 2008 and has a few gaps here and there. Thanks.

Rodze - As far as I know of, I need to pay for an expensive subscription for that. I mean free.
Or is there a free account?

Does anybody need to know where Tik Tok is as it falls between 15 and 20? Heck, I hardly care where it is now and I'm a Ke$ha$tan.

A song at #16 now could have 1500 more spins than a song at #20 but disappeared from the chart because of recurrency. I would say that the Top20 won't accurately represent the most popular 'current' songs in the country, though.
