ADELE is #7 now with 2,760,000.
Winehouse's tragic death will move her album into the all-time top 3.

Not according the Genius Book of World Records. They have Madonna as being the Top Female Recording Artist. Look it up. They also had Shania Twain's UP! as the biggest first week sales ever for a female artist in the US.I'm talking about on a purely global scale - outside of the U.S. Uhm, no. It's always been Britney since 2000 in Guiness

I'm talking about on a purely global scale - outside of the U.S. And Madonna has clearly outsold Celine outside of the US. And FYI, "global" includes the US. About this best sellers list, I wouldn't mind seeing Amy at #1 at some point, though Adele will probably prevent that from ever happening.

Not really interested in getting into a sales discussion from months ago, especially when I have a little bit more of an insight into that than you do.
But yes, 18 weeks at #1 for Adele. :)

The last one to do that was Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel (1970), 25 weeks.
Six albums have spent 21 weeks or more at number one. The record is held by Please Please Me (The Beatles), 30 weeks.

I believe that the Sound of Music soundtrack also spent 30 weeks at #1, correct? The King and I and South Pacific are up there as well.
PDC, bite me. Need Soundscan numbers?

My oh my, aren't we testy. You have no idea how much I know, or anyone else for that matter. I've been following global charts and sales, as well as global box office, religiously for over a decade. Don't assume that that's not the case just because I don't have the time to then also post lists and spreadsheets on an internet messageboard. What do SoundScan numbers have to do with the fact that you inaccurately claimed that Celine Dion is a bigger GLOBAL seller than Madonna? SoundScan is US only, with Canada and Japan (where it doesn't even cover all types of sales) being the only other markets where SoundScan tracks sales. ;) As stated previously in this thread somewhere amongst the mess, TC didn't outsell HC globally, and Madonna's last two studio albums hold the record for hitting #1 in the most markets ever, I'd say that's being as about as big of a global seller as possible.

That's sweet. Lots of people here have been following charts for years as well. Some know more than others, but that's besides the point.
When Celine was at her peak, I could argue that she penetrated more global markets than Madonna at her peak. She outpaced everyone. Madonna is OBVIOUSLY the biggest seller, but as far as a global presence, Celine hit that mark. So you can stop trying to communicate this foregone message, thanks. Publishing is all that I need.
No where did I say that Celine Dion had sold more albums than Madonna.

Soundscan wouldn't really be reliable here given it was founded eight years into Madonna's career & after her commercial peak.

Her UK singles sales are arguably even more ridiculous. She's the #4 UK Top Selling Singles Artist ever, with a wide margin between her and #5. Only Elvis, the Beatles, and Cliff Richard have sold more. And she's achieved that despite having no million-selling singles in the UK, longevity and consistency have taken her to #4.

For some reason the listing in the Virgin Book of Hit Albums included only artists albums but elsewhere in the book they mention soundtracks too. South Pacific spent 115 weeks at number one starting from 1958 but it's just ridiculous to compare Adele to that.

Are you crazy? Mariah is one of the biggest female artists worldwide, I guess Madonna is the only one that's bigger than her. She sure is bigger than Janet and Whitney. And in Uk she's among top 5 most successful female artists ever. So just because she has 1 album on tis list It doesn't mean she's not big. She is also the frst female artist in UK to debut at #1 on singles chart and she held record for the biggest debut for a female artist on albumschart. Nowdays, I feel it's easier for female to sell more albums in UK. Take a look at adele, rihanna, beyonce, there are a lot of albums from past years. No one's saying she's not big worldwide. We we're saying she's not THAT big as compared to her success in the states. As one poster said, Mariah is primarily bigger in the LA and Asian market. I believe she's the only international artist to be in the top 50 best selling artist in Japan's ORICON chart. Mariah is 'big' in Latin America ? I think besides Brazil she is not that 'big' at all here...specially because in Latin America (but Brazil) R&B/ hip hop songs are not popular at all ,and we all know that specially in the last 15 years most of Mariah's hits followed these sounds. It's not surprising that she never toured in Latin America

Yes- Madonna's worldwide albums total is 200 million+, which is a good 40m-50m more than other contemporaries. The "records" total would extend that, too, as her worldwide singles sales rate notably higher, as well. RE Mimi in Asia- her commercial success there dropped off significantly from the Sony days. Whether that has anything to do with Sony being a Japanese company and marketing her more aggressively there, who knows. Her music after leaving sony has changed Im in africa and mariah was HUGE here. Imo JJ is the one who was huge in the US but not worldwide I think it's unfair to say Janet was not huge worldwide. I believe that Janet was huge worldwide from 1998 - 2001. This was the time when Janet was poised to become a true global superstar until Virgin pulled the plug. Also, I don't think Pepsi would get her as their global endorser if she weren't successful internationally. Anyway, Janet may not have million sellers in the UK but the UK is not the rest of the world. Janet is reportedly the biggest selling international female artist in Brazil and South Africa. She sold out massive stadiums in South Africa. Also Janet is successful in Asia and Australia.

But at the same time Janet has sold less albums internationally than she has in the US. Nope. Janet has sold far more internationally than in the US. Her album sales in the US would be around 32 million while her international sales excluding US would be around 46-48 million. This brings her total to around 80 million.

As a simple matter of indisputable fact. I'd love to see a market-by-market breakdown that gives her 45 million+ sold internationally. I need a good laugh. Even her MTV ICON special confirmed 50 million albums sold globally, and AFY had already sold half of it's copies by then. Such a show would do do anything but low ball it, but that was actually an accurate estimate at the time believe it or not. Combined DJ, 20 Y.O., Discipline, Number Ones, and that other GH haven't even sold 10 million globally, let alone the 25 million+ needed to combine with AFY's later sales and her catalog sales since then to take her to 80 million. She has sold 60 millions album worldwide. That easily makes her US sales bigger than her international sales.

I remember thinking WTF when Damita Jo shot straight to #32 in the UK and was certified silver on the same day lol. It probably sold 5-10 % of that amount.
Good times. I love her.

Control - 6 m US - 14 m WW Rhythm Nation - 7 m US - 14m WW janet. - 7 m US - 16 m WW DOAD - 4 m US -9 m WW Velvet Rope - 3m US - 10 WW AFY - 3m US - 7 WW DJ - 1 m US - 3 WW So clearly from Control to Damita Jo, Janet has sold far more internationally than the US. And fyi, MTV ICON was shown BEFORE All For you was released. Press releases are just press releases. Janet's most recent press release for her worldwide sales is 100 million albums sold which is not true. It is just like Beyonce's dad's claims of over 140 million records sold for Beyonce. Now figures versus press releases, which are you going to believe?

Uhm for global stars it's not hard to sell more worldwide than in the US... But are you sure those US sales are not included in the WW figures?
In Janet's case, her worldwide sales are down relatively more than in the US.
