Look for U.K. Diva to Score a Ninth Week at #1, Seether Tops Newcomers
May 18, 2011
It’s a week before Lady Gaga arrives, and Adele is still the world’s reigning pop diva when it comes to the HITS Album sales chart.
Look for the Grammy front-runner to score a ninth week at #1 with a sales total in six figures and climbing inexorably to 2 million U.S. for the XL/Columbia album 21.
Next week’s debuts will be topped with Wind-up South African post-grunge rockers Seether, whose sixth studio album, Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, is looking for a pretty impressive 55-65k debut. Their last album, Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces, debuted at #9 with 57k in Oct. 2007.
Epic’s America’s Got Talent season five winner Michael Grimm, who topped Jackie Evancho in the competition, will score between 20-25k for his self-titled major label debut.
Geffen’s Il Volo, the Italian pop operatic teen trio who will perform on American Idol this Thursday night (5/19), are on target to sell 18-22k of their self-titled debut. They also perform on CBS’ Early Show Saturday (5/21).
Capitol/EMI’s Rome, the collaboration between Danger Mouse and film composer Daniele Luppi, featuring Jack White and Norah Jones as guest vocalists, should do in the same 18-22k range.
Virgin/EMI veteran hybrid singer-songwriter-folk-rocker Ben Harper’s Give Till It’s Gone looks to be between 14-17k, the same total for Capitol/EMI British hip-hop star Tinie Tempah’s Disc-Overy and its hit single, “Written in the Stars,” which this week topped one million downloads in the U.S.
Mercury Charlottesville, VA, pop-rockers Parachute’s sophomore album, The Way It Was, is headed for a similar 14-17k total for the group being handled by Dave Matthews Band’s Red Light Management.
Finally, Warner Bros.’ New Boyz, the California hip-hop/jerkin’ duo of Earl “Ben J’ Benjamin and Dominic “Legacy” Thomas, who scored with the viral hit “You’re a Jerk,” return with their sophomore album, the aptly titled Too Cool To Care, which is looking in the 9-12k area.
The market was down 9% vs. last week, up 7% vs. same week last year and now down only 1% year to date. Black ink is on the horizon.
You may now go back to pondering, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, why a cigar is more than just a cigar.

Adele ties Usher and Santana for #2 on the longest-running #1 albums since 2000. Only Fearless has spent more weeks at #1.

Tinie is gonna flop hard. But I have high hopes in the future for that record. It could eventually sell 250-400K if promoted correctly.

They'll continue to sell singles though. "Break My Bank" sold 1 million, "Back Seat" is on it's way (if not already there), and "Better with the Lights Off" will do the same when sent to radio.

Yessss!!! Adele keep selling above 100k, and keep having the #1 song in America <3 Can't wait to see GaGa's numbers next week. I love seeing huge album sales(which I think GaGa will at the very least go over 600k).

Tinie has a similar kind of momentum going for him as BOB did last year, and BOB eventually went Gold. I think if the right singles are chosen off this album (which is better than BOB's imo), he can eventually sell over a quarter million.

I think if the right singles are chosen off this album (which is better than BOB's imo), he can eventually sell over a quarter million. i have to respectfully disagree with you on both points. first, i think b.o.b's album is far better than tinie's in every way (subject matter, rapping ability, catchiness, beat selection), unless you count "better" as being more club-friendly. second, tinie's momentum is not nearly as strong as b.o.b's was when his album was released ("nothin on you" was #1 on the hot 100, as well as top 10 hip-hop/r&b the week prior to the album's release) AND tinie has ZERO, NADA, NONE, NO urban following. bring his name up and you will get blank stares from most urban-consumers, let alone people who listen to rap in the US. I like tinie, and hope he does well, but he really can't be compared to b.o.b.

Wow @ Tinie. Even Katharine McPhee sold more of her sophomore album first week, and that was without any single on Top 40!

Adele hangs on to #1 next week before surely surrendering to Lady Gaga the following week. With album sales off just 1% now vs. last year, can this be the week we break even? Or do we need Gaga to ga-get over the mark? Either way, albums sales should go into June in the black. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
Adele 21 (XL/Columbia) 145-155k *Seether (Wind-up) 55-60k Now 38 (Capitol/EMI) 50-55k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 28-32k Christina Perri (Atlantic) 27-30k Lonely Island (Universal Republic) 25-28k Jennifer Lopez (Island/IDJ) 25-28k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 25-28k Beastie Boys (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k Fleet Foxes (Sub Pop) 21-24k Justin Bieber Never Say Never (Island/IDJ) 21-24k *Michael Grimm (Epic) 20-22k *Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi (Capitol/EMI) 20-22k *Il Volo (Geffen) 20-22k Adele 19 (XL/Columbia) 18-20k Lemonade Mouth (Walt Disney) 18-20k Foo Fighters (Roswell/RCA/RMG) 18-20k Bruno Mars (New Elektra) 18-20k

HITS overestimated Jenny Lo last week, but this week the album may be more in line with projections. Once Idol ends, we'll see how far it will drop.
Adele is the picture of consistency right now. if she had not released an album this year, it would be a VERY dire situation, indeed.

Go Adele! Both 21 & 19 making an appearance.
Wouldn't it be funny if she got a slot on Idol and blocked Gaga from the top spot. ;)

So happy for this :) Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 28-32k Yeah. This album has nice legs. Incredibly stable sales. Also good for Adele! :) I was surprised to find out today that "21" has lower score on Metacritic than "Speak Now". :o

Wouldn't it be funny if she got a slot on Idol and blocked Gaga from the top spot. ;) I doubt Adele can beat out Gaga, although I don't think Gaga will have those 700K sales people on here are expecting. But it WOULD be AMAZING if Adele had a slot on the Idol Finale. She doesn't need the promo, but it wouldn't hurt to see her perform somewhere.

That shit does not fly, really. It could have had bigger score as well. How do we know reviews with under 77 score were left out? We don`t. Just surprised Adele is not in the 80-90 range with the praise i have heard.

Just surprised Adele is not in the 80-90 range with the praise i have heard. I just wanted to say that I don't think that Taylor Swift's score would hold up just as well if it had 30-40 critics reviewing it because even if a website like Okayplayer had reviewed it, it wouldn't have been positive at all...
