So the label or artist has no say in that? Doesn't an artist get a percentage (points) per album. If the album is being sold for .99 vs. 15.99 what is the breakdown of profits. How this sale is occurring on Amazon's balance: +$0.99 (from consumer) -$7.00 (to Universal) ----------------------------------------- -$6.01 (balance for Amazon) +$7.00 balance for Universal Amazon is losing money, but this is promotion money. Instead of spending those $6.01 to put up ads to increase awareness, they are increasing awareness by making people go to their store to buy this ridiculously cheap product. While I haven't seen Amazon's contract with music labels, their contract for selling digital products on the Android store had a explicit clause saying they can price your item for however much they want, but they'll still pay you a minimum amount, even if the item is sold for less than that. I imagine the contract for the mp3 store is in the same line. Considering this is not the first album that is priced well below the regular price of a digital album, I also am lead to believe this was no exception to the original contract with Universal. This is Amazon's idea and all they did was call Universal to let them know about it -- the way I see it. THANK YOU. I think a lot of people are having trouble understanding that the price the label sells albums at wholesale is not the same as the price retailers sell it for. To the other poster who talked about price floors -- that is more common with expensive, high-end products, not things like CDs.

To the other poster who talked about price floors -- that is more common with expensive, high-end products, not things like CDs. That's exactly how it works. When you deal with Amazon, they set the prices of books, newspapers, etc in their store and guarantee you a certain amount for each item sold. Hence my earlier comments about this being a new avenue for record companies to sell their music. At the end of the day, if people don't want Gaga's album they won't buy it for even 99 cents.

THE COUNT: Amazon has yet to reveal the total number of Born This Way downloads it sold Monday at 99 cents (see items below), not even to the Wall Street Journal’s Ethan Smith. But Smith and co-writer John Kell turned to another form of measurement in their coverage this morning: the number of customer reviews posted. When they checked the iTunes Store Monday afternoon, the reporters counted “nearly 13,000 reviews of the album's two different configurations… Amazon users, by contrast, had posted fewer than 300 reviews, split roughly equally between favorable and unfavorable. Most of the negative reviews focused on complaints about the inability to download all 14 songs.” Meanwhile, our retail gnomes are snooping around in search of more revealing clues… (5/24a)

Hope this will mean people will stop comparing artists sales. Because clearly you cant compare a $1 album's sales to a $9 album.

No the poster is making it sound like the album is being sold as $0.99 regularly, not that the 99 cents was a one day promotion. The album price ranges from like $7-16 normally. I thought he was saying that it's unfair to compare artists whose albums are sold for $1 and $9 regularly, but the English wasn't that good so maybe I misread it. So The Story Of This is...Lady Gaga is cheating her way to get 1 Million sales. At least Taylor Swift sold Million albums legit. :) Put a asterisk* next to Lady Gaga's record. Forgetting that $3 promo code that Amazon was giving away FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK?

I'm 99% sure it sold more than 100k first day. Don't songs usually sell 40-50% of their first week on their first day? This will be especially frontloaded, because 1. Lots of people that wouldn't have bought it, bought it on Monday, and the ones that didn't have time won't buy it on another day. 2. People that would have bought it sometime during the week bought it on Monday instead. 3. There are a lot of lil' monsters that probably spent the 60$ they had buying 60 copies instead of the 5 they normally would have. Soo I vote for 500k Will we get the first day sales? Or do they never give that info out?

Speak Now is by far the better record between the two hands down.

Buying 60 digital downloads on Amazon counts for 1 download, not 60.

Buying 60 digital downloads on Amazon counts for 1 download, not 60. I doubt the majority knows that Can you gift them like on itunes? If you gift them to other people those count as seperate downloads, right?

Lady GaGa does NOT make her album pricing. You think she's going to have Amazon sell it for $.99 just so she can get huge sales? Not only was it for one day, it was only at one digital retailer, which isn't even that huge.
1. Her label would get the first say, and they're not going to sell it for anything less than wholesale price so it can actualy chart
2. Interscope can't force or make any retailer lower the price. That's just silly. You think they would be like, "So here's the deal.. You're going to sell the album for $0.99 and lose out on $6.01. Okay?". It doesnt work that way. Amazon would have to agree to it.
3. Why didn't other digital retailers do it? If Interscope was behind it, and not Amazon, I guarantee you iTunes would have pulled the album or some shit. But iTunes knows it was Amazon playing business, not Interscope.
4. Anyone who thinks one retailer discounting an album for one day is GaGa being desperate needs to seek professional help. Because theyre either.. A. Pressed, B. Delusional, C. Just plain ignorant or D. All of the above
5. This would still have sold a shit load regardless. Amazon will release the number at some point I'm sure, so let's until then to see how "desperate" she was for probably an extra 50k at most.

I don't know how it works with Amazon but multiple purchases of a unit, in most cases, all count as individual purchases just as long as the number isn't a ridiculous amount.
Can't wait to see her numbers. She still has the Idol finale too which is great promo.

LMAO I can't wait to see the comments on the Billboard article when/if it debuts at #50. The label can stop it from charting :)
