www.billboard.com/#/news/it-s-official-lady-gaga-s-born-this-way-1005208502.storyIt's Official: Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Sells 1.11 Lady Gaga .Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 1,108,000 million copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's only the 17th album to sell a million in a week since SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991, and the highest sales week since 2005. "Born This Way" also marks Gaga's first No. 1 album -- "The Fame" debut peaked at No. 2, while "The Fame Monster" EP reached No. 5 and dance effort "The Remix" hit No. 6. "Born This Way's" bow reaps the largest sales week of any album since 50 Cent's "The Massacre" did 1,141,000 in its first week, in March of 2005. The last time we had a million-plus frame was when Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" premiered at No. 1 with 1,006,000 in November of 2010. The SoundScan-era record week is held by NSYNC's "No Strings Attached," when it debuted at No. 1 with 2,416,000 in 2000. Additionally, Gaga is only the fifth woman to notch a million-plus week. The record frame for a woman is held by the bow of Britney Spears' "Oops! I Did It Again," which started with 1,319,000 upon its release in May of 2000. "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, driven mostly by Whitney Houston songs, was the first SoundScan-era album to shift a million, and it did so over the busy Christmas shopping week of 1992 (1,061,000). Later, Norah Jonas' "Feels Like Home" debuted with 1,022,000 in 2004, and then the aforementioned Swift sizzled just last year. While there wasn't any doubt as to whether Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" album would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 -- that's been an assumption for months -- its first-week number was always in question. A month ago, executives at Gaga's record company, Universal Music Group, were expecting a first week total of around 400,000. That number escalated to 650,000-700,000 by its release on Monday, May 23 -- the same day AmazonMP3 announced its controversial decision to sell the album for 99-cents for one day only. By last Wednesday (May 25), sources indicated that a million-unit week seemed quite plausible. Once Amazon opted to again sell the set for 99-cents on Thursday, May 26, "Born This Way's" million-unit week was all but guaranteed. It's estimated that AmazonMP3 sold upwards of 440,000 downloads of its 99-cent "Born This Way" album. Gaga's total downloads haul from all digital retailers was 662,000 -- the biggest week for a digital album in SoundScan history. It represents 60% of the set's overall first week. A full recap of the week's top 10 selling albums and digital songs will follow on Wednesday morning (June 1).

Wow! 60% of the total album sales came from digital albums. Is that the highest percentage we have thus far?

When I read this, I read that it wouldn't have reached a million without the sale. It's great that she did. Let the sales of the summer roll in.

When I read this, I read that it wouldn't have reached a million without the sale. It's great that she did. Ugh. Not necessarily. Enough of those 440,000 downloaders could have easily bought Born This Way elsewhere had that sale not happened, allowing it to still reach 1,000,000. Please play again.

Yes, we can't assume all 440,000 or even any would not have still bought it

The Fame Monster only peaking at #5 will go down in history looking very bizarre.

Even if we assume that only half of the 440,000 would've bought the album at full price, thats around 888,000. Still a great opening. If 75% of those 440,000 bought the album at regular price, it would've sold a million. Not sure how likely that is. Regardless, it's all irrelevant. The fact is that the album did sell a million.
And if the 330k estimate from the first 99 cent day was true, then the album would have still sold a million without the second day.

Obviously, if those people really wanted it, they would've have bought it anyhow at whatever price. But let's be realistic here, MOST LIKELY, Gaga would not have made the million mark had it not been for that $0.99 sale that went on for TWO days.

This is my last comment regarding the whole 99 cents thing...I disagree. that she would have sold 1 million without the sale.

It's estimated that AmazonMP3 sold upwards of 440,000 downloads of its 99-cent "Born This Way" album.
so 40% of the total 0.99$

Also how many out of the 440k total that Amazon sold were sold at 99 cents? The album was only sold for 2/7 days at 99 cents. Therefore I want to know what the Amazon breakdown was for it's digital album sales at 99 cents vs. the regular price?

Maybe there needs to be a distinction for the digital era. I think record companies in general should just stop shipping CDs to stores and just sell their music online...and get companies to sponsor albums rather than have all that risk on themselves.

Incredible sales.
Also interesting to note that the two biggest sales weeks of the past five years came in just the last 7 months or so. Great news for the industry.

We need to take a look at the larger implications of these sales.
Bottom line: People will purchase music if it's accessible and affordable. The days of selling albums for over $10? Kiss those days goodbye.

I think this 99c promotion is a good idea but I don't think Amazon is gonna do it again anytime soon.

We need to take a look at the larger implications of these sales. Bottom line: People will purchase music if it's accessible and affordable. The days of selling albums for over $10? Kiss those days goodbye. In addition to the loss leader* pricing from Amazon there was lots of innovative marketing involved in moving units - in particular digital downloads. You had things like the Farmville tie-in, tie-in's with the iPhone Grnder app, the Best Buy cellphone tie-in (some of those sales counted and some did not depending on how the sale was made), etc. As well Gaga did her best saturation level marketing that might even have put Beyonce to shame. Some of these innovations can be duplicated but some might be one-offs that even Gaga won't be able to do again. * Some people are acting as if loss-leader marketing is new. This is, however, the first true digital loss leader. In the past retailers might buy, for example, 50k in units and sell them at a big discount but their sales were physically limited by their stock. There is always an unlimited supply of digital stock. In the past, iTunes with its monopolistic dominance of the digital market never had to use such deep loss-leaders. Amazon, with deep pockets and a desire to make a big splash in the digital music marketplace is the first to use loss-leaders in such a big way. Whether they do so again is debatable since this promo cost them almost $4 million which is big money even to an Amazon.

I just think albums in general would sell at lot better if they weren't over $10. Maybe not $.99, but it can't possibly cost that much to "manufacture" a digital album.
I'd gladly pay $3 or $4 for an album from an artist I was vaguely interested in.

If only they were less than 10 dollars as well
