On another sad note, neither Rihanna, Minaj, or Spears' new singles are doing anything to help sell their albums. Katy Perry is showing consistency whenever a new single raises up. Katy's singles do better and the album is 7.99 every week at Best Buy at the least. Loud is currently 13.99 and I'm sure Femme Fatale and Pink Friday are similarly priced.

I'd still say it's ET that's impacting the album sales more than LFN at this point. When we get the video I'm sure we will see the effect it carries onto the album.

^ Yup. It was only on sale couple of weeks (the same weeks Loud was on sale I think), and it's priced at $12.99 this week.
People really shouldn't make things up.

Next week or in 2 weeks, Adele may overtake Gaga and back at #1! Interesting! And ironically, many people though that Adele's run at #1 would stop because of Gaga.

i'm sorry, but 13.99 is waaaaaaaaaay too much for a cd nowadays. I'd never pay that much anymore.

I know this because I remember her team taking advantage of the lower price a lot in the holiday season and thinking Rihanna's team should have jumped and did that with "Loud" too. "Loud" and "Femme Fatale" have only been discounted once or so and that recently.

Katy's cd has definitely been pretty heavily discounted a lot. It is something I noticed and thought a bit strange over the past few months. Her cd sales are still a bit baffling to me given plenty of discounts, promo, a busy holiday season where it was also discounted, and four of the biggest hits of the decade basically in a row. But, I guess maybe all that gets you for a pop cd is 1.5 million? They should re-release it just to make sure she gets over 2 million sold-she may anyway with another two singles though.
Gaga is going to take a heavy fall-after the flashy opening she really needs a hit or two to get the casual buyers interested. Must be nice to know you will have a decent total anyway though. Even if it does never get a real hit she will still sell probably 1.5 million which other pop stars have been called "massive" for reaching.

I am sure with 2 more singles (LFN and TOTGA), Teenage Dream can pass 2M by the end of this year.

It's not really surprising to me that TD is just at 1.5m even though it should be pulling utterly massive numbers. In today's industry, where you can get music for free effortlessly, artists need to do more than just have hits to attract album buyers. They have to make the public interested in them as an artist & persona, something Katy Perry will likely never be able to do.
As for Gaga, I think she'll hold up fine in the coming weeks thanks to EoG starting to really take off.

Maybe it's just that store? Because on their website it shows $12.99 (and $13.99 for Loud). I apologize if that isn't the case though. And I still think 1.5 million is absolutely nothing to sneeze at. She might be selling more singles, but she has sold a massive amount and continues to do so. And her tour is a sell-out so...she's doing fine.

I was referring to the post above yours. Damn our posting at the same time. Just now seeing this. Oops! Nvmd then, sorry if I came off snippy or anything. Oh, they debuted at the same time? My bad then. I know they both blew up in Europe first, but I was thinking that their worldwide releases corresponded with their US ones (BSB came out in 97, NSync in 98). Gaga's drop is less than I expected, but I think the third week drop will really tell the story. Ideally she will level out quickly and do six-figure numbers for the next several weeks so dropping to 180k wouldn't be so bad.

Besides Adele, what other acts are reaching 2m+ in sales with their album? Not many. We know album sales have been declining for years now, and Katy Perry is one of the acts who see consistently strong individual-track sales, while also seeing decent (in this climate) album sales.

Yep it's not like she's floppin or anything. She consistently is in the top 20(or just outside)and ahead of Minaj, Spears, RiRi the last few weeks(and they all dropped a few months after her). 1.5 Mill, plus so far every single she's released over 4 Mill, doing pretty darn good!

People see album sales, but ignore singles sales.
For instance in the all time high of album sales 99-01, single sales were almost nil.
I'm not saying that music sales nowadays equal what they used to be, but if one adds the singles sales of one artist to their album sales, the number goes up considerably.
For instance, take Katy Perry. She has sold around 1.5 million albums (or close), and around 15 million or so singles (if LFN ends up being the big hit it seems it will be, then her number will go up to like 18 million or so).
Industry people (like Billboard) does a very rough equation of 10 singles = 1 album.
That makes 1.5 million + 1.5 million (15/10) = 3 million total for her project.
NOT BAD AT ALL.
PS: They (Katy and her label) should try to get the album sales to go to 2 million and her singles sales to go to 20 million.
PS2: Or GaGa, taking her latest numbers available. Her TF/TFM project has sold in the vicinity of a grand total of 9 million (adding her singles using the above equation). That's almost what Christina Aguilera did with her debut album, or what Mariah Carey was doing in the mid 90's.

It's the stores (Best Buy/Wal-Mart/Target/etc) that determine pricing though, correct? The label gets the same wholesale amount from them for shipments, so it's not like Katy's label is losing out on any profit.
Either way, touring is clearly the best determinant of whether an artist is connecting with people and doing well. It's not like albums OR singles give them much profit. Katy is on a 100+ date sold out tour (Rihanna's tour is sold out or close to it as well), so I'm not sure why people constantly try and make it seem like she's not doing well.

^not that big a wow when most of the sales leading to 1million were the .99 sale.
Still think it will do half (at least) of Fame. Now watch it go to selling 20-40K a week in order to get there.
edit:
I'm not sure why Adele taking back #1 in a few weeks would be suprising...but okay. lol She'll prolly be top seller of the year. No biggie IMO

My bad then. I know they both blew up in Europe first, but I was thinking that their worldwide releases corresponded with their US ones (BSB came out in 97, NSync in 98). BSB came out a year earlier worldwide, but both would hit it big right from the start in Europe. BSB Debut in Europe: Singles "We've Got It Going On", "I'll Never Break Your Heart" in 1995 and "Get Down" in 1996, with their debut album "Backstreet Boys" in 1996. All 3 were big euro hits. Debut in US: They released their debut US singles in 1995 but to minor success. Their US debut album was "Backstreets Boys" which consisted of songs from "Backstreet Boys" and "Backstreet Back" (European albums) in 1997 with Quit Playing Games becoming the breakthrough hit for them in the US. N*SYNC Debut in Europe: Single "I Want You Back" in 1996 to huge success, followed by the self-titled album in 1997 with more singles "Tearin Up My Heart" and "Here We Go" Debut in US: Single "I Want You Back" in 1998 followed by the album the same year.

Went to the Best Buy by me about an hour ago. Katy's CD is selling for 12.99 and Rihanna's is selling for 13.99. I didn't take a pic because I don't know how to upload it to this site.
Oh yeah, Adele's is selling for 11.99.

even 11.99 is too much. Everything should now be 9.99 or less, imo.
