Has anyone heard about this bill that has been proposed in Congress? It would make actions such as uploading songs to YouTube, performing karaoke versions of songs on YouTube, and using copyrighted music in your YouTube videos a felony punishable with up to 5 years in prison. thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c112:S.978:

Karaoke versions a felony?! Those are the only videos the labels don't pull.

PRISON?! Really?! If you're going to make something like this punishable, why does the punishment need to be prison!? Perfectly fine people end up in prison and then their lives are ruined because of something that otherwise seems so trivial.

This is completely moronic. Do they know how many people buy music after hearing it streamed? Do they know how bad this makes them look?

I just don't understand what they hope to accomplish with this. They do think people are now going to automatically pay for official streaming services? So much for adapting for the future.

The prison systems of the U.S. are already severely overcrowded. This would only make things worse. It's absolutely ridiculous. This is the taxpayers' hard-earned money at work here folks.

Yet another reason to hate major record labels.....and the government. This is completely moronic. Do they know how many people buy music after hearing it streamed? Do they know how bad this makes them look? They are amazingly out of touch with this generation.

Wow. Can we please do something efficient in Congress instead of s**t like this? Unfortunately, Congress' definition of efficiency *is* saving massive corporations money, and putting as many non-violent criminals in jail as possible.

This is completely moronic. Do they know how many people buy music after hearing it streamed? Do they know how bad this makes them look? The question is do they care. This won't pass anyway i guess Congress forgot about the fair use law. The music industry (and congress for that matter) just keeps digging themselves into deeper holes. The consumer is constantly punished & screwed over again and again.

It really just seems like they're trying to find a legal way to shut down music on Youtube so they can force people into paid streaming, and then threw in the karaoke thing on top of it. The karaoke part is really what I find mind-bogglingly stupid and what I hope eventually kills this bill. I absolutely don't agree with any of it but when it comes to the karaoke covers in particular it violates the fair use law and it would require the copyright owner to prove there is monetary value in said karaoke versions. Needless to say, it's A FREAKIN KARAOKE COVER so there is no "value" unless they plan on suing Youtube for the ad revenue, because the people uploading covers sure as hell aren't seeing a dime from it. And don't the labels that allow their vids on YT already have some sort of agreement with them already anyway? Do they plan on allowing retroactive lawsuits? If so will they sue themselves for allowing Justin Bieber to be discovered this way?
And ultimately this isn't going to make more people buy into streaming services, and really won't even stop Youtube uploads. The loophole in clause A is obvious - this allows you to upload roughly 18 songs a year, or a song about every three weeks and still fly under the radar. If you want to upload more than that all you have to do is either delete a couple of vids when you're ready to add a new one, or create a new account once you've reached the 10 song/180 day limit.

The industry will die incredibly faster than it already is, because with this bill the industry will take YouTube and Internet radio down with it. Some of today's artists live and die by the response they get with what they, their record labels, or their FANS, promote on YouTube, especially with MTV and VH1 having become reality networks and no longer promote music like they used to. If the industry screws with YouTube, Internet radio and online streams, the people will rise up and screw them, big-time. Gold will become even harder to come by, let alone platinum.

Will Vevo still be allowed to put videos up on Youtube? They have deals with the various record companies to do all that so it's not like they just put up whatever they like.

Cool.

The Obama era is becoming the censorship era. They are even banning websites that they feel are sharing illegal material, like torrent sites. They are determined to end illegal downloads (movies, music, porn... everything). Obama, like his handlers, want EVERYTHING to be a crime.

The bill (not proposed by Obama, but by a group of both Democrat and Republican Senators) would target individuals who mass upload copyrighted content for commercial purposes and increase the penalty. People who bootlegged movies and CDs back before digital took over could be punished with jail time as well.

I have hopes that this will not pass. This would look bad for Congress, the idea of crime, and the music industry, a triple-threat.

He signed on to continue the war, he's against same-sex marriage equality, etc. Democrats need to think twice before electing this man again.
