You know the Christmas season does not benefit everyone, right? If you have a big name and a built in fanbase (at times prior hype from other outlets), you will sell during that season. What Alicia did without a hit during that season was good especially when there have other artists who think the holiday season would help them to sell more. In the end, she manages to do 1.5 million off any top 10 hits, that's impressive, imo. And what Beyonce did this season without a hit is probably even better. Like jackrock said, she still had a strong radio presence at the time with "Empire State Of Mind" which was enormous so it's not like it felt like her album was just tossed out there. I wouldn't say it is. We all know Beyonce has a built in fanbase but also she had major exposure prior the release as well. Radio is for longevity for a major artist but it doesn't determine an artist's opening. I never said her album felt it was thrown out there but I will not take another artist's hit as a valid argument in this case.

Exactly, she fed off Empire State Of Mind's success with all the plugs of the part 2 it in her album commercials too. Not shading her or saying it's a bad thing, just pointing out. How many artists could do that with a hit that is not their though? Her name and exposure drove the sales, just as Beyonce in this case. Not many but Alicia did, and it was a smart move.

I know how Beyonce's fans love to discredit other artists and she can't be compare to anyone else. However, she should hope if she sells as well as TEOF after her era is finished. No one is trying to discredit Alicia, they're just pointing out she had some things going for her that Beyonce doesn't this time around and it was only brought up because someone used TEOF to make it seems as if 4's numbers are low. No need to get pressed and make generalizations about entire fanbases.
