Overall I think it is so silly to try and come up with reasons to try and discredit an album's sales. It's like someone saying "Oh, he was only voted class President b/c he had the best campaign and he's the most popular. The others didn't campaign as much as he did so it's not fair". Like, seriously? How ridiculous does that sound? i kinda get what you mean but i think the issue for me anyway is how hypocritical so much of them are.. like it would be okay if they just stuck with your reasoning but they have come up with so many excuses for this & its just too convenient since they always bash other artists for sales too.. they keep flip-flopping what their saying.. one minute her promotion has been horrible then the next she has the best campaign out of everyone so she can't be faulted for that... like, what? ??? that's not the only contradiction too, theres been a lot of others..

It is shocking to see people are happy with this debut. Is that how low expectations were? This is Beyonce we are talking about. I mean, if you compare her numbers to Christina's flop ablum, of course you'll be happy. But she's not a has-been, there should be higher expectations especially after her last album won 6 Grammys. She should be compared with the biggest sellers of today like Gaga and Taylor...both sold over 1M in their first weeks. This is really disappointing. I hope she'll take that break she was talking about and come back with some quality music. Well...there wasn't a 99 cent sale that I am aware of, that might have helped get the numbers up I don't think ANY sale could help these numbers. Now people are happy that at least Beyonce's album outperformed Bionic, a flop album from a has-been (no offense). What is the world coming to? Beyonce is supposed to be the "queen." Okay I'm done.

I hope she'll take that break she was talking about and come back with some quality music. You know what. I lied. I'm not too tired. - Yes, expectations were low. The general discourse around here and in the press was of 'moved dates', 'Destiny's Child reunions', 'Bionic numbers', and 'career killers'. The fact that she opened better than 90% of her contemporaries without a hit is impressive. That accounts for people being impressed.
- Beyonce is not the biggest pop star in the world with one of the biggest promotional and marketing campaigns in recent history. Not getting Gaga numbers is not a sign of failure. Or else everybody else in the world is a failure. This is what I'm talking about when I say 'moving the goal posts'. If anything but the exception is a loss, then there is no winning.
- What numbers were you expecting? Her last album opened with around 150k more in a better sales climate, with two hit singles, a massive domestic promotional blitz and a quarter for release. Did you expect her to match that without any of those things? Exceed it?

THE NUMBERS FOR BEYONCE ARE AVERAGE. NOT GREAT. NOT TERRIBLE. AVERAGE FOR A STAR OF HER CALIBER.
Sorry for the caps, but this is just getting ridiculous.

"rivals" debuting so low. Katy has been out longer than Gaga and is on the same album # as Gaga, yet Gaga debuted with more AND sold more overall despite the album coming out a year after Katy's. Hypocritical, I say. Plenty of artist have proven that how long you've been out is irrelevant to how successful you are. Beyonce debuted with more than Katy's, Britney's, Ke$ha's, Chris Brown's, and Rihanna's most recent efforts. And you will deal.

This album's debut is BETTER than IASF's when you consider it's been released in June instead of November. Three years later. With zero hits instead of two. And, despite what you may think, with much less promo. IASF's numbers were the ones a little bit disappointing. 4's numbers are great. The haters were sure she would have a bad debut. Now that they've been proved wrong, they start saying "nope, good is over 400k and I know better 'cause I'm a Merriam Webster redactor" or "nope, the true test will be 2nd week". So what will you say if she has a good second week? That the true test will be the 6th one? Please, deal, because you all ran out of wigs for Bey to snatch.

To the people saying this opening isn't good. PUHLEASE. Denial is such an ugly thing.
To the Yonka st.ans doing the non-stop bragging, calm down. Let's see how this does in the long run or there will be some serious crow eating further down the line.

I hope she'll take that break she was talking about and come back with some quality music. Pardon my French, but what the hell kind of crack are you smoking? In Soundscan's 30+ history there have been only 18 albums that have debuted over 1 million. I don't know where you got the idea that 1M debuts was EVER the norm even when sales were booming, let alone now, but that is just wrong. Also, she DID take that break that she was talking about, why would she take another one? Please remember that despite what the "stans" and "haters" here would have you believe, that there is a middle ground between happiness and disappointment. I'm not overjoyed with the fact that she doesn't have a big single (yet), as that certainly would have boosted her numbers. But in light of the fact that she doesn't have a hit just yet, these numbers are very solid. Now she will hopefully get the hit songs that will help her sustain these sales and hit platinum by Christmas.

Happy about Beyonce's numbers, hopefully she'll end up at around 1.5-2mil by the year's end. I wonder if Adele will remain above the 100k mark this week?

Columbia could score the top two titles on next week's HITS Album Chart as Beyonce debuts at #1. Big Sean, currently in third, could be a spoiler with an outside shot to challenge for #2. Blake Shelton re-enters the Top 15 as his Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton surges at iTunes after being sale priced as part of a promotion for The Voice judges. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*Beyonce (Columbia) 290-310k Adele (XL/Columbia) 90-95k *Big Sean (Def Jam/IDJ) 85-90k *Selena Gomez & the Scene (Hollywood) 75-80k Jill Scott (Blues Babe/Warner Bros.) 50-55k Jackie Evancho (Columbia) 50-55k Bad Meets Evil (Shady/Interscope) 40-45k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 40-45k *David Cook (19/RCA/RMG) 38-43k *Scotty McCreery (Interscope) 38-43k Lady Gaga (Interscope) 35-40k Justin Moore (Valory) 30-35k Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 30-35k *Limp Bizkit (Interscope) 30-35k *Taking Back Sunday (Warner Bros.) 28-32k Bon Iver (Jagjaguwar) 28-32k

I never expected her to do south of 250k so these numbers are not surprising. Having said that, the prediction is average at best and nothing to jump up and down about. She has had solid promo in the US.
The proof will come at the end of the era to see what her final numbers will be and i'm saying less than 2mil US without the aid of multiple re-releases, dvds and other gimmicks.

JIll Scott numbers didn't suffer a huge decline and as expected Beyonce's prediction increased. She most likely will do a little over 300k after the GMA performance tomorrow.

Good, predictions are higher now. With the MTV special and GMA, hopefully she'll be able to best DIL and do 320-325k.

Didn't Britney's recent open with similar numbers? That's around 500-600k these days right and out of the top 40 with hit singles? I think Beyonce's in a similar place these days in terms of hype outside the core fans, 1.5-2 million without a re-release seems like a stretch.

If it crosses 300k I'll call it a success. Anything else is average but terrific with no hit single.

Strong release schedule + another decline in sales = Gaga likely out of the top 10. :o She'll probably be back in the top 10 next week thanks to a weak release schedule as long as she doesn't suffer too high of a drop next week.
And, once again, impressive numbers for Beyonce. 300k looks like it's very much within reach now.
