"Figure it Out" - Royal Blood is the new Single of the Week. It has hit the top 20 of the US Mainstream Rock chart already, and is the 2nd British crossover SotW in a row after "Budapest". Definitely appreciating this and hope it becomes a trend!

HG's point that a random single from basically unpromoted project(s) doing this well is still impressive holds true, but felipe's point that Eminem has managed to do better in similar circumstances (e.g., "Crack a Bottle") is also true. It could be a sign that time has brought a slight reduction in Eminem's massive popularity, but it could also be a symptom of him releasing this song at one of the most competitive times for digital singles of the year to date. Probably both are playing a role, but, at this point, I think Eminem has cemented his legacy to the degree that, whenever he does eventually show the obvious signs of a career on the decline singles-wise, he'll still be considered a relatively good seller in other respects (albums and/or tours etc.) As to just where he stands with iTunes popularity, I think we'll get a good indication when his hits project drops and the completely unpromoted new tracks are made available; my guess is that the random new album tracks will all see at least some fleeting iTunes popularity. |
