The iTunes thing about not reporting instant-grat sales indeed is true.

Is what the song sells next week a good representation of Taylor's pre-orders? Say, the song sells 300k, does that mean her pre-orders for 1989 will be in that range?

If its total does include pre-orders (not sure with all this rule change talk), they would only be a percentage of that hypothetical 300k total, as every purchase of the song wouldn't be from people who pre-ordered the album. So, if the song did sell 300k, only 150k (for example), could be from pre-orders.

So if 300k pre-ordered it, 300k have gotten the song, which would classify as a single sale...no? + whatever other sales from people who are purchasing it individually.

Yes.......what are you confused about? You asked if the song sold 300k next week would that be a good estimation of her pre-orders. I said the 300k wouldn't all be from pre-orders, so unless they separated the instant grat sales from people who just downloaded the individual track, not necessarily.

Like I said, instant-grat "sales" are no more. I confirmed with a Billboard contact.
Was there anything released last week that was tied to an album pre-order? If so and it was ranked well, we should see the impact of the non-reporting of such instant grats.

Yeah we are on the same page. In all honesty, I think 300k should be a good estimate. I believe 40% of her first week sales for Red were digital. She's more of a hard copy seller, especially with Target's support. So assuming Billboard's 750k estimate is accurate, and following her previous history, 40% of 750k is 300k, so say half of her digital sales come from pre-orders, that's 150k or so, plus 150k from separate purchases, 300k for this isn't wouldn't be such a stretch. That lead is insane though.

Regardless of whether all of OOTW's sales get counted towards the Billboard chart or not, I think it's a forgone conclusion that Shake It Off will be returning to the summit next week. All of this hype has increased her lead over AATB to about 60%. But I guess some of those will be pre-order tracks as well.

If so and it was ranked well, we should see the impact of the non-reporting of such instant grats. The only ones that I can think of/find: Kiesza - "The Love" (part of a preorder on iTunes; standalone on Amazon) Mary J. Blige - "Right Now" Nick Jonas - "Numb" TV On The Radio - "Careful You" Jessie J - "Masterpiece" and "Ain't Been Done" Florida Georgia Line - "Sippin' On Fire" Charli XCX - "London Queen" Little Big Town - "Quit Breaking Up With Me" T.I. - "Paperwork" The Swon Brothers - "Pretty Beautiful" OK, so there were more than I thought.

Wait but instant grat sales will still count towards a song's total sales to date right? Like for example with Animals, which started out as an instant grat but is now getting good, steady sales and could sell a few million...

Because if it stopped on 10/10, 99% if not 100% of the sales would have already occurred prior to that date. The only thing would be any album pre-orders taking place after that time. So SIO will see a small drop in sales, then.

^I believe it was supposed to be Oct. 3. Anything from this week's chart on out should reflect the non-reporting.

So with this new rule, "Out Of The Woods" could debut low on the Hot 100. Not like Taylor's another pre-order singles that reached top 10 on BBHot100 in the past.

It's worth pointing out, though, that the gap is still big right now. #2 is still 0.2231 as "Out of the Woods" starts its decline. That means that that, yes, while pre-orders definitely are fueling this, the gap isn't falling as hard as normal, which means a lot of these downloads are still downloads of the actual song itself.

Like for example with Animals, which started out as an instant grat but is now getting good, steady sales and could sell a few million... The song itself is still a track that you can purchase and count towards sales. The thing is that you'd have to go to the song itself and "Buy $1.29/whatever regional equivalent" instead of "Pre-Order $9.99/whatever regional equivalent". Of course, if you do the "Complete My Album" later, it still counts as negative sales for that week. Anyway, in "Animals"' case, "V" is already out, so all track sales on the iTunes pop chart are in fact purchases of the song at this point, and considering it didn't do nearly as hot as a grat single, it is on track for good lifetime reported sales.

So in other words total accumulated sales for a song do not count digital sales of the album that the song is on, correct?

lol Slipknot took over #1 from Taylor. Should be a quick rise, quick fall, like their other instant grat songs.

Does Slipknot have more album preorders than the Foo Fighters? That's really surprising

They also have had a single out to boost pre-orders.

Random side note: I just despise the band name Slipknot. It just reminds me of gooey, green snot being wiped all over someone's face. Gross.
Fits their music well, I guess.

Taylor's been back at #1 ("Out Of The Woods") and #2 ("Shake It Off") for nearly two hours.
