19. James Newton Howard - The Hanging Tree
So damn happy to see this here. I find it weird, though, that Jennifer Lawrence isn't credited on it at all when she is in the credits of the film. Her voice is so surprisingly raw and natural here. It sounds incredible when paired with that gorgeous orchestra.
For those that don't know, "The Hanging Tree" is a song sung by J.Law as Katniss in the new Mockingjay film. Somewhere in the film she sings it a capella (I haven't seen the film yet, but I happened to walk in on this scene while doing an aisle check at the theater I work at) and then it shows up in the credits (after Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat") with an awe inspiring orchestra behind her vocals. It's "Skyfall" type beauty. The song does not appear on the film's main soundtrack, but it does appear on the score soundtrack.

The scene where Jennifer Lawrence sings it is a pretty haunting and beautiful scene, especially when watching it in the film. I won't rave about the film in this thread, but I will say that the scene with this song, along with the event that follows it, is just an incredibly gripping ~10-15 minutes. I'd love to see "Hanging Tree" garner some real success. Hitting the top 5 on iTunes is already incredible. |

Look like the AMA and Mockingjay effect is quite strong if all those songs could dominate the top 20 right now, and many last week's top 10 pushed down. This week is going to be a pretty rave week for digital sales then.
