Billboard will put enough qualifiers on this "streak" to make it factual. They will use the term "radio single" or "discounting chart singles not promoted to radio" or something similar.

Which is what I have been saying to, with enough qualifiers, you can make a "streak" or a "record" out of anything.

If these singles "don't count" because we want to make "streaks" and "records" based on a chart that does count them - to me that doesn't make much sense. (without qualifiers)

^Record Research had its own odd rule about streaks (not sure if it still does)- duets didn't count against a streak if they broke a streak, but they counted toward streaks if they maintained them. OK then. :)

Ah, i remembered, how Mariah's Sweetheart, which peaked at #125 Bubbling Under Hot 100 in 1998 due to limited airplay. But Billboard didn't consider it as the end of Mariah's streak of top 20 hits, not until Can't Take That Away in 2000 which peaked at #28 Hot 100 and really ended the streak.

Nope. Even if "Hair" did debut in the Top 10, it's not an official single so it wouldn't count.

That #125 song was not a Hot 100 single, the #28 song was

Note about "Sweetheart"- it did have a catalog number. Some copies were sold in some stores- but then Sony pulled the plug on a full-on single release.

With streaks, there's always going to be some instance that requires an asterisk. Like with the recently discussed Whitney Houston's seven consecutive No. 1 hits- that was for singles that appeared on the Hot 100. She did, though, have a single promoted to R&B radio only during that time, which did not appear on the Hot 100.

Okay, GaGa has 11 consecutive Hot 100 Top 10 singles. Singles. Not songs. GaGa has released 11 songs as radio singles since The Fame, and all 11 of them have gone Top 10 on the Hot 100. The only other artist to beat that feat was apparently Mariah Carey, who had 12 of her singles consecutively hit Top 10 on the Hot 100. "Hair" was not an official single, so it would not count in that tally for GaGa unless it was to become a single.

When someone looks at the Hot 100, is there a distinction between "real" and "fake" singles. Or official and not-official, I guess.

These streaks that are being invented in this thread would seem to be valid if we were talking about a different chart, like a chart that excluded singles that didn't have a certain level of airplay perhaps.

No there's "singles" and then there's "songs". The only 2 singles that were official during the iTunes countdown were BTW and Judas. EOG was determined to be a single a few weeks after it's release. Hair was never a single, simply a "song" at the time of release (like EOG was).

"Radio singles" is a term used before to describe singles promoted to radio.

There are other types of singles. (itunes sells a bunch of them)

But that's how Billboard counts it, too. You notice they said all of Katy Perry's songs from TD that have been promoted to radio hit #1. NLTM and CTD also charted in the top 100, but they of course never went #1.

Also, notice Billboard also said all of Rihanna's songs between "Rude Boy" and "S&M" went #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart... well... what about "Rockstar 101"? Since it never charted on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, they don't include it in their tally. (However, they do seem to be counting it when it comes to the Hot 100 itself as "Rockstar 101" was a real single and charted, but failed to reach #1 on the Hot 100.)

No, Mariah also has 11 consecytie top 10s, her 12th single, Anytime You Need A Friend peaked at #12 and ended her streak. So, this week, Gaga ties Mariah's record.

I underlined the qualifier. This is a true statement. I don't disagree with that.

That is what I have been saying all along. You can manufacture any "streak" you want to if you add qualifiers. The qualifiers become necessary on this chart because you don't need radio promotion for a song before it charts. Other types of singles chart too.

There probably were. Prior to 1998, radio-singles were not allowed to chart. A song promoted to radio must also have been made available for purchase.

However, songs made available for purchase did not need to be specifically promoted to radio.

Adele's "Someone Like You" vaults from #19 to #1 in its ninth week on the Hot 100. That's the biggest leap into the top spot since "What's My Name?" by Rihanna featuring Drake vaulted from #60 to #1 in November. (I'm discounting a pair of subsequent songs that debuted at #1: Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way.")

Adele performed the stark ballad on MTV's Video Music Awards, which gave it the boost it needed to go all the way. The song jumps from #11 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs. It sold 275,000 copies this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the biggest weekly total by any song since Adele's previous hit, "Rolling In The Deep," sold 297K copies in May, when it was in its third week at #1. "Someone Like You" jumps from #42 to #19 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. It registered 46 million "all-format audience impressions," according to Nielsen BDS. That's up a whopping 59% over the previous week.

I wasn't at all sure that Adele would ever have another #1 hit. There's no question about her talent, of course, but hits as massive as "Rolling In The Deep" can be very hard to follow. (Leona Lewis has yet to return to the top 10 since the blockbuster success of "Bleeding Love," the best-selling song of 2008.) But Adele is back in the top spot less than three months after "Deep" wound up its seven-week run at #1.

"Rolling In The Deep" tops the 5 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the first song to sell 5 million digital copies in a calendar year. It streaked to 5 million in just 35 weeks, faster than any other song in digital history. The old record was held by the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," which topped the 5 million mark in its 36th week.

Lady Gaga, who opened the VMAs with "You And I," also makes news this week. "You And I" vaults from #16 to #6 in its fifth week. It's Gaga's 11th top 10 hit, which is all of her singles that have been promoted to radio. She landed her first top 10 hit, "Just Dance," less than three years ago. Gaga has now amassed as many top 10 hits as three other female artists, all of whom have been at it much longer: P!nk, who landed her first top 10 hit in 2000; Britney Spears, who landed her first in 1999; and Gloria Estefan, who landed her first, with Miami Sound Machine, in 1986.

"You And I" is Gaga's first out-and-out ballad to make the top 10. She's deeper into her career than Madonna was when she released her first ballad. Madonna had cracked the top 10 with four dance/pop hits ("Borderline," "Lucky Star," "Like A Virgin" and "Material Girl) before she turned heads with her fine rendition of the sensuous ballad "Crazy For You." In the same way, "You And I" is demonstrating Gaga's range.

This is the second time that a song titled "You And I" has made the top 10. A ballad by that title by country stars Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle reached #7 in 1983. Another song titled "You And I," by funk master Rick James, hit #13 in 1978.

Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" drops from #5 to #10. Billboard's Gary Trust notes that this is the 69th consecutive week that Perry has had at least one single in the top 10. Perry's record-setting streak stretches back to the debut of "California Gurls," the first single from Teenage Dream. That irresistible hit, a collabo with Snoop Dogg, debuted at #2 in May 2010.

Lil Wayne has a remarkable 12 songs on this week's Hot 100. Eight songs from Tha Carter IV enter the chart this week, joining two songs from the album ("How To Love" and "She Will," featuring Drake) that were already on the chart. In addition, the rapper is featured on two other currently charting hits: DJ Khaled's "I'm On One" and Kelly Rowland's "Motivation." To think that just a year ago, Weezy was in prison. I think you can safely say he's making the most of his freedom.

Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.

1. Adele, "Someone Like You." The song leaps from #19 to #1 in its ninth week on the chart. It's Adele's second #1 (and second top 10) hit. Digital sales rank: #1 (275K).

2. Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger." The former #1 song dips from #1 to #2 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (207K).

3. Foster The People, "Pumped Up Kicks." The song holds at #3 for the second week in its 19th week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (218K).

4. LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem." The former #1 song drops from #2 to #4 in its 24th week on the chart. This is its 16th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (141K).

5. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass." The song rebounds from #6 to #5 in its 19th week on the chart. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (107K).

6. Lady Gaga, "You And I." The song leaps from #16 to #6 in its fifth week on the chart. It's Gaga's 11th top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #4 (175K).

7. Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars, "Lighters." The song drops from #4 to #7 in its 12th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (100K).

8. Cobra Starship featuring Sabi, "You Make Me Feel..." The song jumps from #18 to #8 in its eighth week on the chart. The group performed the song on the VMAs pre-show. It's the group's second top 10 hit. "Good Girl Go Bad" (featuring Leighton Meester) reached #7 in August 2009. Digital sales rank: #5 (159K).

9. Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer, "Give Me Everything. The former #1 song holds at #9 for the second week in its 23rd week on the chart. This is its 17th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (86K).

10. Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." The former #1 song drops from #5 to #10 in its 15th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #17 (69K).

Three songs drop out of the top 10 this week. Lil Wayne's "How To Love" drops from #7 to #14, ending a 10-week run in the top 10. OneRepublic's "Good Life" drops from #8 to #15, ending a seven-week run in the top 10. "Stereo Hearts" by Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine drops from #10 to #12, after just one week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (140K).

Rihanna's "Cheers (Drinks To That)" holds at #11 for the second week. Digital sales rank: #7 (143K).

As noted above, eight songs from Lil Wayne's Tha Carter IV enter the Hot 100 this week. "Mirror" (featuring Bruno Mars) arrives at #16. Digital sales rank: #6 (149K). Weezy's other new entries are: "Blunt Blowin" at #33, "Megaman" at #52, "It's Good" (featuring Drake & Jadakiss) at #79, "How To Hate" at #84, "Nightmares Of The Bottom" at #90, "President Carter" at #94 and "So Special" at #95. Beyonce's "Love On Top," which she performed on the VMAs, enters the chart at #20. It's vying to become the first top 10 hit from B's 4 album. "Run The World (Girls)" stalled at #29. "Best Thing I Never Had" peaked at #16. Digital sales rank: #10 (113K)...Dev's "In The Dark" jumps from #37 to #28 in its fifth week...Alexandra Stan's dance hit "Mr. Saxobeat" jumps from #38 to #36 in its eighth week.

Two David Guetta songs debut in the top 40. "Turn Me On" (featuring Nicki Minaj) bows at #37. "Without You" (featuring Usher) opens at #39. Guetta has had two top 10 hits. "Sexy Chick" (featuring Akon) peaked at #5. Flo Rida's "Club Can't Handle Me," on which Guetta was featured, reached #9.

"Beautiful People" by Chris Brown featuring Benny Benassi bows at #43. It's vying to become the fourth top 30 hit from Brown's former #1 album, F.A.M.E.

Lady Antebellum's "Dancin' Away With My Heart" opens at #50. It's the third top 50 hit from Own The Night...Kreayshawn's "Gucci Gucci" jumps from #66 to #57 in its sixth week..."Fly" by Nicki Minaj featuring Rihanna bows at #64. The song, from Minaj's chart-topping album Pink Friday, had previously climbed as high as #76.

Young The Giant's "My Body" opens at #65. It's the first chart hit by the band, which was the only rock act to perform on the VMAs.

LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" debuts at #76. "Party Rock Anthem" is already the fourth best-selling song of 2011, and it's still going strong...Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" opens at #82. It's from Flo's upcoming album Only One Rida (Part 2), his whimsically-titled follow-up to Only One Flo (Part 1).

Rihanna's "S&M," which hit #1 in April, tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Rihanna's seventh song to sell 3 million or more copies, which is more than any other artist. Katy Perry is runner-up, with six 3-million sellers.

Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the 13th country song to reach this plateau, but the first by a male solo country artist...Carrie Underwood's 2008 hit "Just A Dream" tops the 1 million mark. It's Underwood's seventh million-seller, a total topped by only one country artist in digital history. Taylor Swift has amassed 13 digital million-sellers.

Yeah, well P!nk and Britney (in particular) did not have single/digital releases for their complete output during part of this period, so I'm certain their count would've been higher. P!nk probably one more (FP) and Brit (Sometimes, Lucky, IASFY, Everytime, and probably MATM).

Actually the streaks aren't being invented. The streaks do exist. Secondly your point about qualifiers is a moot point because how many qualifiers can you logically and reasonably add other than promoted to radio or not promoted to radio.

Not it's HOT 100 peak is #3. Billboard makes the distinction it does because otherwise there is no way to compare chart history. Plus other artists didn't have the advantage/disadvantage of songs being able to chart in the way digital singles charted now. Almost no artist would have a Top 10 streak past album release week. Unless of course they refused to release an album or an E.P.

A song being released to radio doesn't change it's HOT 100 peak.
