Note about "Sweetheart"- it did have a catalog number. Some copies were sold in some stores- but then Sony pulled the plug on a full-on single release. Why did Sony do that? Low airplay.

I remember seeing the Cd single at the Used CD store. I thought the song was terrible.

When someone looks at the Hot 100, is there a distinction between "real" and "fake" singles. Or official and not-official, I guess. These streaks that are being invented in this thread would seem to be valid if we were talking about a different chart, like a chart that excluded singles that didn't have a certain level of airplay perhaps. Actually the streaks aren't being invented. The streaks do exist. Secondly your point about qualifiers is a moot point because how many qualifiers can you logically and reasonably add other than promoted to radio or not promoted to radio. The "streaks" are being invented here. As I pointed out in an earlier post, even Paul Grein does not use the word "consecutive" when addressing the 11 top 10 hts for Gaga. Instead he says all were "promoted to radio" ALL OF THIS I AGREE WITHIt just so happens there were not 11 singles in a row that were promoted to radio. ('Hair' was a single, just not a "radio single") But...for the purposes of this thread, 'Hair' doesn't count and 11 consecutive singles made the top 10 - :o

If we are using this distinction, we have to accept that "The Edge of Glory" SINGLE peaked at #6. It's chart run: *3*-19-8-7-6-6-6-6-6-7-8-10-12-14-16-21 As a "song", it debuted at #3. Since it was determined to be a single a few weeks after its release, as a "single", its Hot 100 peak is #6. Not it's HOT 100 peak is #3. Billboard makes the distinction it does because otherwise there is no way to compare chart history. Plus other artists didn't have the advantage/disadvantage of songs being able to chart in the way digital singles charted now. Almost no artist would have a Top 10 streak past album release week. Unless of course they refused to release an album or an E.P. A song being released to radio doesn't change it's HOT 100 peak. LOL I see a contradiction here. If the case of 'Hair', this thread is excluding its entire chart run because it was never an "official single". Now in the case of this song, this started out as an itunes single before it became an "official single" If we are going to be consistent, we should exclude all chart runs of songs before they became "official singles" Otherwise we are counting chart runs for one, but not the other so we can justify our "streak"

From the Billboard article:
"Fellow VMA standout performer Lady Gaga likewise benefits from a buzzworthy appearance on the telecast. After she opened the festivities with "You and I," the song charges 16-6 on the Hot 100 - becoming her 11th top 10, her entire output of singles promoted to radio. The cut climbs 8-4 on Digital Songs (175,000, up 61%) and 37-23 on Radio Songs (41 million, up 32%). "
Note: Lady Gaga's 11th top 10 hit, her entire output of singles promoted to radio. (I agree with this too)
No mention of a streak of 11 top 10 hits in a row. (the non-radio singles make this accomplishment non-consecutive)

How annoying. Interscope should just payola 'Hair' to #1 and give it a to-be-scrapped adds date just to end this.

Wow, I didn't even realize E.T. was still on the chart at #47 with 30 weeks!

"On the Floor" persists for a 28th week, outlasting follow-up "I'm into You," which drops off this week.
Scotty McCreery's new track must be Bubbling Under at No. 1 or close to it- it scanned 24K, but I guess it didn't have much in the way of airplay.

LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem has now spent a total of 16 weeks in the top 10, and it's at #4 right now, so it might log a few more weeks there. Pretty impressive longevity.

Damita's top 10 streak for tracks that appeared on the Hot 100 actually was 21- in terms of radio-promoted singles that were eligible to chart on the Hot 100, "Everytime" broke that streak, so that indeed would make 18.
Madonna's top 10 streak for Hot-100-eligible singles was 17, while the top 5 streak was 16. Had Billboard charted the "Into the Groove" 12-inch single on the Hot 100 as it did on the R&B chart, that would have made it 18 top 10 (and 17 top 5).

Change that qualifier to just "radio-promoted singles" and it goes back up to 19, thanks to "State of The World." Wait, no..."Twenty Foreplay" knocks it back down to 16. This is all very confusing...

I don't understand that argument. Nowadays songs chart once a CD is released so the "singles" (that is, songs promoted to radio) streak would still exist. I understand what you mean about "Hair" but you could also say the same thing about "Video Phone", "Speechless", and "Marry the Night" since they all charted.

Now in the case of this song, this started out as an itunes single before it became an "official single" If we are going to be consistent, we should exclude all chart runs of songs before they became "official singles" Otherwise we are counting chart runs for one, but not the other so we can justify our "streak" Had hair been a single and peaked at #12 during it's pre-release release I would've said the same thing. You include the entire chart run if the song ends up being a regular radio release single. The best counter argument would be well you should exclude songs that were only released as radio only singles....and songs that radio chose to play with without the artist and label's consent. 11 radio releases have become 11 Top 10 HOT 100 Singles CONSECUTIVELY. Hair was not promoted to radio. Lady Gaga has never had a song that she promoted to radio miss the Top 10. In Billboard's case, it likes to compare apples to apples and the only way to do that for the purposes of the history books is to include the entire chart run of official radio releases.

For the purposes of the streak being manifested in this thread. "Lady Gaga has 11 consecutive top 10 singles". Period. However, There are two examples in this thread of unbiased professional articles that refer to Gaga's 11th top 10 hit as every song released to radio has hit the top 10. I have said every step of the way, I agree with that. That is not the same thing as 11 consecutive top 10 singles. My final thought on this topic: I doubt you will see any unbiased publication say that Gaga has 11 CONSECUTIVE top 10 singles, without the qualifier of "all songs that were promoted to radio" or "radio singles" or some other qualifier that references radio.

reinfeld- at the time, those singles weren't Hot-100-eligible, though. :) If just looking at the airplay chart, then there's stuff like "Where Are You Now." :)

Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" moves 92-80*, reaching a new peak. I felt like this JUST HAPPENED with SLY creeping up the charts when RITD was top 10.

reinfeld- at the time, those singles weren't Hot-100-eligible, though. :) If just looking at the airplay chart, then there's stuff like "Where Are You Now." :) That's why I said "radio-promoted singles," which removes the Hot 100 from the equation. That would also eliminate "Where Are You Now" and "Throb," as those songs received unsolicited airplay ("State Of The World" and "Twenty Foreplay" were both actively promoted to radio). In any event, I wasn't serious in my first post anyway. Just demonstrating what a slippery slope this whole debate becomes.

Interesting piece from GaGaDaily: In the mid 80's Madonna had a great run of consecutive hits: Holiday, Borderline, Lucky Star, Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Crazy For You and finally Angel. She halted that hit streak when her label released Into The Groove to radio, but not as a physical single. Ironically, Into The Groove is second only to Borderline on my area AC stations today when it comes to airplay of Madonna hits.

^I forget if I posted it in this thread, but "Into the Groove" WAS commercially released- albeit, as the B-side to the 12-inch "Angel" single. Billboard charted "Groove" on the Black singles chart (peaked at No. 19), but supposedly 12-inch-only singles weren't allowed to chart on the Hot 100 in 1985. So, it didn't appear. It did peak at No. 6 on Radio & Records, and it was a No.1-selling single on Variety's Singles Sales chart (certified gold).
"Into the Groove" usually is Madonna's most-played recurrent hit; "Borderline" isn't that far behind (along with "Holiday,' "Like a Prayer" and "Crazy For You").

As discussed earlier, "Someone Like You" is the biggest jump to No. 1 for a single not impacted by a single release. Billboard.com also has an article about ballads and the charts. www.billboard.com/#/news/adele-makes-billboard-hot-100-history-with-1005345742.storyAdele Makes Billboard Hot 100 History With 'Someone Like You'With Adele's leap from No. 19 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with "Someone Like You," the singer achieves the biggest jump to No. 1 in the chart's 53-year history that wasn't spurred by the release of a single. Every other larger vault to No. 1 in Hot 100 history came as a result of a single arriving to the market. That includes the chart's greatest jump, Kelly Clarkson's 97-1 leap in 2009 with "My Life Would Suck Without You" or what was the tally's biggest climb until 2002: the Beatles' 27-1 rise with "Can't Buy Me Love" in 1964. "Someone," on the other hand, zoomed to No. 1 thanks to buzz generated by Adele's MTV Video Music Awards performance on Aug. 28. The song, her second No. 1, was released to digital retailers on Feb. 22 as a track on her XL/Columbia "21" album, which arrived the same day. "Someone" sold 275,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, in the week ending Sept. 4 (up 191%). Its huge sales increase came courtesy of the song's water cooler-worthy performance on the most-watched VMAs in history. On the show, Adele sang the heartbreaking ballad on a darkened stage, accompanied by a sparse piano. "Adele's all about the music," Columbia senior VP of sales Steve Kennedy says. "She and her manager, Jonathan Dickins, wanted to get across in the VMA performance that the music was more important than anything else." "With all the bombastic theatrics going on that night," Kennedy continues, "we felt that her very simple set would completely stand out [against] everything else." MTV executive VP of music and talent Amy Doyle echoes Kennedy's thoughts. "Adele is one of those rare artists that can command a stage with just the power of her voice and subtle nuances of her vocals. 'Someone Like You' is timeless and we're proud that we could provide her with the world's largest stage to introduce the song to a global audience." The staging of Adele's VMA performance -- and its impact - recalls her BRIT Awards turn on Feb. 15. On the U.K.'s equivalent of the Grammy Awards, she sang "Someone" in a similar setting, and it immediately caused a huge surge on the official U.K. charts. The next week, "Someone" vaulted 47-1 on the singles tally while "Rolling in the Deep," the album's first single, moved 5-4 the same week. Meanwhile, on the U.K. albums chart that week, "21" held at No. 1 for a fourth frame and its predecessor, "19," climbed 6-4. With those stats, she became the first living act since the Beatles in January 1964 to have two titles simultaneously in the top five on both the U.K. singles and albums charts. The No. 1 Hot 100 triumph of "Someone" follows a seven-week run at the top by the lead single from "21," the multiformat smash "Rolling in the Deep." Earlier this year, when it debuted on the Latin Songs chart, it became the most widely crossed-over song of the past 25 years. The Latin tally was the record 12th Nielsen BDS-based Billboard airplay chart on which "Rolling" appeared. "Rolling in the Deep' broke down a lot of doors with regards to multiformat play," Kennedy says. "'Someone Like You' is about to crash through them all again." "Rolling" is currently the top-selling song of the year in the United States, with 5 million sold. Adele's "21" is also the year's biggest album, with 3.3 million. Columbia expects that "21" will continue to sell at a fast clip, projecting that the album could shift a total of 4.5 million by the end of the year and between 5 million and 6 million by March 2012. The latter sum would include whatever sales bump the singer will likely receive from the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards -- where Adele seems a lock to take home at least a few trophies.

Anyone know what used to be the biggest jump to #1 (not impacted by a single release)?
