It would be like Britney covering songs from the Stones or Joan jett. Doesn't seem to work.

^Well, someone like Spears covering a legendary act like the Rolling Stones was a little different, but, I get what you mean. :) "American Pie" is regarded as a classic by some, but it's far from being at the level of reverence as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." Madge's cover of "I Want You" was far superior to her version of "American Pie."
Anyhow, the era of 1999-2004 or so is full of hit radio tracks that would have attained higher Hot 100 peaks with a CD single.

I'll have to add to the unnecessary shade for cover songs I remember many people wanting Madonna to stop music altogether because of how horrible she covered American Pie...do you all remember those pop up videos? I remember that was the last pop-up. LOL. Also, I saw a similar poll in a music magazine. That's why I thought it peaked early because I thought it was going to #1 how fast it was zooming up the charts and then all of the sudden...crash. Then I realized the whole "1st month curiosity play" thing.

Does anybody know if the top 100 or 200 soundcan album sales leaked for the 2010 year end? I have found either the top 100 or 200 for 2001 all the way to 2009 but can not seem to find 2010 for some reason. Seems weird it would be the only year of the decade not to leak. Is it out there somewhere? Please help

It was a little too lightweight for me.

^Yeah, pretty lightweight by Madonna standards. McLean earned some nice dough from her version of "American Pie"- though his comment came before all of the receipts came in. :)
"Music" came out just a handful of months after "American Pie" disappeared- so, any negativity over the track didn't have any negative impact on her musical endeavors. The Music album ended up a commercial and critical success (though it didn't fare as well on decade-end lists as it did in year-end lists).

This will be MLJ's 2nd week.
2/3 is a toss up between SLY & PUK.

^I was speaking of critics' lists, dtm, but yeah, no "Music" in the 2000s' top 100 (24 weeks on the chart was a decent run, though). On Billboard's top 50 countdown of Madonna's singles (which weighed pre-BDS/-SoundScan-era singles to compensate for the shorter chart stays), it appeared at No. 9.

Do you have a link to M's top 50 BB list? I'd never seen it.

br, Billboard didn't post the list online- but, it appeared in the year-end issue of 2009 (which also served as the decade-end issue and put a spotlight on the Sticky & Sweet Tour)). I PM'ed you the list. :)

Wow, 2 pages of Madonna discussion , in a topic that had nothing to do with Madonna
Note: not complaining, just making an observation
Carry on: HG ;)

^ I think the discussion started when some were talking about acts who have peaked in every position in the top 10, and then it just progressed from there. We have to wait at least five to six months before Madonna drops the lead single from the new album, so, in the meantime, we must keep her name going.

It was a little too lightweight for me. I thought we were referring to the US charts. Also, it is good that Mclean praised Madonna's version. Too bad the general public (in the US) didn't feel the same way which is what I was referring to. Not surprised that it hit #1 in other countries she has alot more success out of the US than in (especially towards the later 90s-present). ;)

I was kinda irked Music didn't make BB Top 100 songs of the decade. I know...music is probably the last successful single that I really loved. I liked Sorry, although she doesn't care too much for it, and Jump. Outside of that, I can't think of too many songs from her 00s catolog that I like.

BRITNEY SPEARS - I Wanna Go: 100.766 (- 0.293) Grr...lol. I guess that top 5 peak is not going to happen. 17. RIHANNA - Cheers (Drink To That): 56.816 (+ 0.460) Well, it is a 5th/6th single so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that it is slowly building. ADELE - Someone Like You: 35.443 (+ 2.671) KELLY CLARKSON - Mr. Know It All: 4.762 (+ 1.164) This isn't really taking off...sigh. :'( [Source]

^(@slw) What do you mean by "this isn't really taking off"? Consecutive 1M+ updates are good, especially since its official adds date isn't until the 13th. Or are you saying "sigh" as in, you are disappointed that it is taking off? I agree that it isn't her strongest single (in fact, probably the weakest of her entire career), but sonically it's a good fit for radio. I'm glad it's getting good reactions now, it will help set her up nicely for her album's opening numbers. The real barometer for public reaction though will be the digital sales.

slw- aside from "Music," there are a handful of tracks on that album that I REALLY like. A few off of American Life, and then I thoroughly enjoy the Confessions... album- the last two tracks on that album are not favorites of mine, though. With Hard Candy, I like a handful of tracks alright enough, but the album as a whole is not one of her best- didn't feel like her heart was in it like other albums (it was the last for WB).
"Someone Like You" now is starting to take off big- will it be a second No. 1 for Ms. Adkins?

Definitely en route to becoming another smash number one hit, although I think the probability was high for a while now.
How long has it been since a song with no beat like that and a simple piano accompaniment has hit number one, if that has happened?

All time chart record - just kidding :o
Ballads don't often hit #1 anymore in this era but....music styles that hit #1 tend to come and go in cycles. In chart history, many musical styles have been to #1 before(icluding ballads)

*goes back to the chart history books* I suppose "Hey There Delilah" qualifies as a track with no "beat"? That hit No. 1 in July 2007. Perhaps the last piano-driven, "beatless" No. 1 was "Candle in the Wind 1997"? The B-side had a "beat," though.

Well, Someone Like You is getting remixed airplay, so I'm sure that is helping just a tad. I would like to see this #1 over some other songs, just because I personally love this song.
