THIS WEEK’S DEBUT RIDES THE STRAIT AND NARROW
Lil Wayne to Repeat at #1, with George Strait Top Debut, Lindsey Buckingham's Indie Bow
September 7, 2011
It only seems like George Strait releases an album every few months. His latest MCA Nashville release, Here for a Good Time, is the 39th in his career, and first since 2009’s Twang.
Look for it to enter the HITS Album sales chart next week as the highest-ranking debut of the week, with sales estimated in the 75-85k range.
That’s based on one-day estimates from those physical and digital retailers who haven’t shut down from either hurricanes, earthquakes or hackers.
Cash Money/Universal Republic hip-hop star Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV will certainly remain #1 for at least another week after scoring close to a million in its debut on the charts.
Label principals Ronald “Slim” and Bryan “Baby” Williams, the New Orleans brothers who have worked with Weezy since he was a teenager at the label’s very beginning, were ecstatic at the news.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Lil Wayne and everyone here at Cash Money,” said Slim. “It’s a tribute to the hard work and commitment he’s always shown, since the beginning.”
"I consider him my son, part of the Cash Money family from the very start,” added Baby. “One thing I've learned. No record is safe from him.”
Mind Kit’s Lindsey Buckingham independently released solo album, Seeds We Sow, also hit retail this week.
Look for Capitol Nashville/EMI’s Lady Antebellum, Flip/Atlantic’s Staind, Roadrunner’s Dream Theater and Zuma Rock’s Bush up next at retail Sept. 13.
Album sales are up 29% vs. last week, up 27% vs. same week last year and up 3% year to date.
Track sales are flat vs. last week, up 15% vs. same week last year and up 11% year to date.
TEA (Track Equivalent Album) sales are up 20% vs. last week, up 24% vs. same week last year and up 5% year to date.

I know 75K isn't a horrible number but I'd be slightly disappointed for George. Guess it's just a sign of the times. Can't expect 150K+ debuts forever.

^It's Strait's 26th full-length album of all-new material- that's a heckuva lot of albums for someone who debuted in 1981. Then there's his compilations, holiday albums, live albums, Pure Country, etc.

George Strait Heading For Billboard 200's Top Debut
September 07, 2011 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
There won't be much of a surprise at the top of the Billboard 200 next week, as it is expected Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" will hold at No. 1 for a second week after its blockbuster 964,000 debut.
While it's too early to tell how much "Tha Carter IV" may sell in its second week, Billboard projects that it will probably see a second-week decline of at least 65-80%, resulting in a second week unit total noof perhaps 190,000 to 340,000. That sort of drop wouldn't be unexpected, especially for an album with such a monster opening frame.
While Weezy likely has next week's No. 1 locked up, look for country icon George Strait to be the top debut. The singer's new release, "Here For a Good Time," could start with over 80,000 by week's end on Sept. 11, according to industry prognosticators. Strait seems easily on course for his 17th top 10 on the Billboard 200 and his 24th No. 1 on the Country Albums chart. He already owns the most No. 1s on the Country chart in history.
The title track from Strait's album jumps 11-9 on the Country Songs chart this week, marking his 84th top 10 hit. The achievement brings him closer to the all-time top 10 record holder, Eddy Arnold, who collected 92 top 10's between 1945 and 1980.
Strait's "Here For a Good Time" is the only album looking to debut in the top 10. In other news, expect a significant gain and re-entry for the Beatles' greatest hits package, and former chart-topper "1" (released physically in 2000). The set was issued digitally for the first time, exclusively through the iTunes Store, and it's being heavily promoted both in iTunes and on Twitter.

That's a pretty sizable gap there Billboard- 65%-80%. I'd think it will lean more toward 75%-80%. A 65% drop wouldn't be that bad, for a title opening with 964K.

I was actually thinking Lil' Wayne's drop would be bigger, like 80%-85%. Billboard's prediction is very suprising. So if he falls by 70%, that would be around 290K, which would bring his total to over 1.25M in two weeks. Pretty impressive.

^But the gap, as mentioned, is pretty sizable. Because this was a holiday week, that could throw off the predictions somewhat. Billboard doesn't usually post 15% gaps in terms of predicted drops (at least that I recall).

^ Oh yeah, that's probably the reason. Well, regardless of that margin of error, I'm sure Wayne's drop will be closer to 80% than to 70%.

Lil Wayne will easily repeat at #1 next week despite a second week drop of around 75%. Although there is only one debut in this week's Top 15, there are, however, a few new entries. The Beatles 1 album re-enters the chart (and Top 5) thanks to becoming available digitally for the first time this week at iTunes. Maroon 5's Hands All Over benefits from a reissue with the new track, "Moves Like Jagger," and sale pricing at iTunes. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
Lil Wayne (Cash Money/Universal Republic) 230-250k Adele (XL/Columbia) 115-125k *George Strait (MCA Nashville) 80-90k Red Hot Chili Peppers (Warner Bros.) 70-75k Beatles 1 (Capitol/EMI) 60-65k Jay Z & Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/Roc Nation) 55-60k Maroon 5 (A&M/Octone) 35-40k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 30-35k Now 39 (Capitol/EMI) 27-30k David Guetta (Capitol/EMI) 24-27k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 24-27k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 24-27k Foster the People (Columbia) 24-27k Beyonce (Columbia) 24-27k Barbra Streisand (Columbia) 21-24k Lady Gaga (Interscope) 21-24k

Aware of that, Censor- I'm simply saying that Strait's released a lot of albums in his career. Is that OK with you? :)
Is Katy Perry's album on sale this week? Projected to return to the top 10.

^^She only sold around 18K last week, so that would be quite an increase. Typo perhaps?

Teenage Dream is $6.99 on iTunes this week... but that's still quite a significant increase.

Great surge for Maroon 5! This should push them to around 640k next week. It also looks like Katy will temporarily overtake Gaga in total sales again next week just as the latter passed her this week.

Katy Perry and her cheap sales tactics. First that last minute remix, then the reduction of the price of LFN, now this!! This is just pure chart manipulation.

With the big discount on Itunes she zoomed up the chart-that must be where a lot of her increase is coming from. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference though especially since her album always seems to be available for pretty cheap in stores. Maybe Itunes is the place to do major discounts-I think that is part of the reason M5 zoomed up too.

$6.99 must be the going rate for Pop albums. They should price them all that cheap. ;)

Select albums were on sale from the 5th to the 8th
Katy Perry is listed at 9.99, since the sale is over
It is #11 on itunes, so itunes isnot necessarily the driver
