You guys stay crying! Is it just me or are newer artists dominating the charts right now? I'm looking at the airplay stats and most of these acts have made their debut in the last 3-4 years. That's the nature of the business. It's unusual to have an artist who can really hit the charts regularly after 4 years.

Especially if the act is 40+ they may have a one-off significant hit, but 40+ veterans are not likely to rack up hit after hit from one album.

congrats to Katy for a 7th week at #1 on mediabase. How close was the #2 song? 7M away. But this is probably her last week as Eminem is only 10M away now.

Well Eminem is the most famous artist on the song... Even though technically it's a Bad Meets Evil song.

Thanks Kworb.
Looking good for Maroontina, big lead, could get another few weeks at no1 (unless Adele is doing promo?).

Didn't MLJ just pass SLY in sales over the weekend? Perhaps there will be more of a sales gap? Nonetheless, with the airplay lead, MLJ should come out on top.

MLJ could be a 'stayer' at #1 for a few weeks . It's airplay updates are more or less matching SLY's. No promo lined up for Adele (she's currently postponing dates on her UK tour due to a chest infection). I suppose the big test will come if they ever get onto similar airplay levels. But MLJ is looking like a monster in the making.

Adele (she's currently postponing dates on her UK tour due to a chest infection) :( Hope it's not too serious. Regarding MLJ and SLY on the chart, I think MLJ will take it for a couple more weeks (like 2-3), but then SLY will return as its airplay catches up and MLJ's sales start to fall. There could be surprises though.

I guess MLJ may stay at #1 Hot 100 for weeks cos airplay get bigger and bigger and sales even remain consistent! Who predicted this song would be one the biggest hits of 2011? (US and worldwide)

Interested to see how much further PUK can get in airplay. I see it stalling around Top 5 on Pop, but HAC is loving it so it will be interesting.

MLJ really is pumping life back into M5 & Tina's flagging careers. They should tour together.

^I think further hits- along with hit albums- really would determine whether there's life "pumped" into their careers. MLJ is one hit single. Granted, further exposure on The Voice won't hurt their commercial potential, but, outside of one major U.S. hit single, Jennifer Lopez didn't benefit all that much from her Idol exposure. Lopez is older than those two acts, though.

Yes, seems like exposure on reality shows can help sell a single but albums are another matter altogether. SLY is now gaining on MLJ and if it continues will be back to #1 on iTunes. MLJ will certainly be #1 for the next week or 2 due to airplay advantage but after that I think SLY could take over for several weeks as airplay increases (it's only 9% down in sales to MLJ now but has only approx 55% of MLJs airplay). Once airplay isn't a major issue probably all it will need is for a decently talented contestant to sing SLY on US X Factor. Unless, of course, something suddenly comes in and shocks us all.

I don't really follow a lot of CHR/pop music (I'm more of a country fan), but I'll listen every now and then and I've always been a M5 fan. I was on a high school trip in Mexico back in 2007 when "Makes Me Wonder" was smashing, and I heard it all the time...airport in Omaha, Houston, on the plane, on people's iPods...and all over the fricken place in Mexico, even.
So I honestly thought that "Moves Like Jagger" would be quite the hit...because it just seemed so radio-friendly and catchy like "Makes Me Wonder" is. Their stuff in between has been pretty good as well, and while I do think the initial buzz for MLJ helped the song in the early run, its airplay increases of late is just the response to continued strong sales and fan support. People like the song, and the fact that it's a legit hit on its own actually isn't too surprising to me...I don't usually have a good feel for pop music and what will be a hit (because I really don't listen to pop radio much), but for some reason I just felt like MLJ would be big.
