As much as I love Mariah and want her to keep the record for most #1's (female) - Rihanna's in too deep no to overtake the title from her. Will MC da MC ever get another #1? I think Maria will definitely get another #1 but that wouldn't solve the issue...rihanna will clearly have time to rack up more #1s even if mariah does score another #1...I can't see mimi keeping riri at bay and score 5 or 6 more. Riri might end up overtaking the Beatles if she is more strategic about her features.

COLDPLAY - Paradise: 14.527 (- 0.173)
Wow. Pop radio is not really touching this. And given the fact that WFL is rocketing right now, Princess of China will face a huge challenge as well.

Billy Preston is the ONLY other person to ever be credited on a Beatles' song, much less two of them. That's because at George Harrison's request, he was invited to come and play with them while they were rehearsing and recording the "Get Back" sessions in early 1969. The same sessions that more than a year later, would be re-produced by Phil Spector(yes, THAT Phil Spector) and made into Let It Be, the final released Beatles album. Billy Preston is the second one, Tony Sheridan is the first There is an entire album called 'The Early Tapes of the Beatles with Tony Sheridan" I knew someone would bring that up. While they were already using the name the Beatles at that time (1961), they were billed on those recordings as the "Beat Brothers," and they were backing Tony Sheridan up, not the other way around, so technically it's debatable whether those can be considered true "Beatles" recordings.

You never know...I think Adele's success this year, coupled with listener burn-out with synthy dance-pop, could end Rihanna's number one streak in the next few years. I don't mean that as hate towards Rihanna, I'm just saying her youth is no guarantee she'll rack up ten more #1 hits. Who would have thought when the Bee Gees collected their sixth consecutive chart-topper in 1979 that they would never see the top 5 again? Who foresaw the same thing happening to Boyz II Men after "4 Seasons Of Loneliness" topped in 1997? Rihanna and her team are very clever, but she's also very heavily tied into the current pop scene. Once that fades (and again, I think Adele's critical and commercial success this year will change the pop landscape of the next few years) will she have a second act? A lot of huge artists who are closely identified with an era of music find it hard to be successful once that era ends. For every Justin and Britney there are dozens of acts whose careers cooled once their music went out of style. Rihanna may be able to switch it up and dominate for a long time to come, but I don't think anyone can guarantee that with any certainty.

I actually think GaGa, still somewhat of a novelty act, was in danger of falling victim to the electro burnout more so than Rihanna, who ironically helped usher in this musical trend. That's why the former is very careful about the singles she releases now.
It's too early to tell if Adele is more than just an anomaly, but I do see Rihanna going a different direction for the album after this one. We may even get a hint of it later on during the era. Nevertheless, as long as she keeps the same top-notch team and work ethic I'm sure she'll be fine.

Rihanna is more of a legend than Mariah could ever hope to be. Mariah has not even earned the right to be in the same sentence as Rihanna.

Chart feats aside, how can anyone compare Rihanna and Mariah?

I agree with Adonis. Dance music is here to stay. Also, Rihanna has been versatile and is poking her head into different genres lately. I think she will find ways to reach audiences for years seeing how consistent her output has been for the last six.

I think Rihanna has learn to sell herself well to the public that why she is a success like she is. Her music doesn't come off generic (even if it can be) because her voice. She may not have the best voice but she has been learning to use it that makes her standout. I wouldn't think she would have a problem if the current music trend changes because she has been getting her feet wet in about everything out there.

Rihanna is more of a legend than Mariah could ever hope to be. Mariah has not even earned the right to be in the same sentence as Rihanna let alone being compared to an artist as unimaginative as Mariah. This is not April Fool

Mariah might score her 19th #1 with All I Want For Christmas is You with Justin - currently #59 on iTunes.

im not even a fan of Mariah but to compare Rihanna to Mariah is not right....It is much easier for artists to collect #1 after #1's thanks to digital sales then back in Mariahs day...This is like putting Taylor Swift in the same league as Shania...it shouldn't be compared...the years in the business and success they have all earned in their own way seperate all of these artists...why compare? The age difference alone should cancel out comparisons....I don't understand why people are always comparing artists to other artists...they are unique individuals...Not the same person....Rihanna has had great success over the years, but would she have had the same success in the 90's, Mariah has had success in the 90, 00 and prob will in the next album release as well....Just a thought, and FYI I prefer Rihanna LOL but facts are facts :)

People have to buy the record. Doesn't matter where and how they buy the record. People can download the records for free. That's something Mariah didn't have to deal with for almost all of her hits/singles/albums.

The proof is in the album sales - nuff said People don't buy albums like they did in the 90s. Bad comparison. Even albums that were barely hitting the Top 20 in album sales were going double platinum.

Interestingly enough Mariah's when Mariah was scoring #1 after #1 is was in a time when single sales were dominant which would be equal to the digital downloads in my opinion.
As for album sales, no artist in the past five years have sold what the top selling artists did in the 90s so to compare album sales is not sensible. As kylecburke said, different eras and different times. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
I do think Rihanna will be here for awhile evne if pop does change. Her single releases are testament to that. I can go all the way back to GGGB but just looking at Loud, all the singles released were from different genres and did not sound anything alike. She will be fine.

Exactly. Using digital sales as an excuse is such a cop out. At the end of the day, the demand has to be there.

I imagine Mimi's original will garner the bulk of airplay the song receives this season; I doubt AIWFCIY would be a No., 1 contender. I can't imagine Bieber's hot-mess vocals on a live performance impacting sales dramatically.

I can't see a burn-out on synth pop in the foreseeable future. The genre is becoming progressively more synth focused as we introduce heavier influences from house. Neither We Found Love or LMFAO's recent would have been in trend in 2009 or early 2010. If Rihanna is able to stick around beyond the life of the dance trend, she still has a background to fall on having an amount of success in Urban/R&B.

There will be a music video and some performances of both artists, probably not a #1 but a top 100/top 20 hit would be very great

To those will say Rihanna relies on current trends, or even dance pop, keep in mind Rated R had few dance influences and it's consistently rated as her best work. The closest thing to dance was "Rude Boy" & "Photographs" which means she would have no problem adapting to different musical climates.
