it's a great opportunity for her to move on to other ventures. Do you really want Katy to work with only Dr. Luke for the rest of her career? Absolutely not.

This will be Katy's first real test at establishing her longtime music career.

Agreed. Dr. Luke is a good avenue to build a foundation but any artist that wants to move beyond just a few years has to branch out and expand their sound. I'm curious as to what Katy's next move might be. Perhaps a more saucy pop/dance sound or something.

So Firework and Waking Up In Vegas were her only hit songs not produced by Dr. Luke? Damn, didn't know that.

Other Artists Dr. Luke Isn't Allowed to Work With: Jessie J. ("Price Tag", "Domino") Flo-Rida ("Right Round", "Who Dat Girl", "Good Feeling") Taio Cruz ("Dynamite", "Hangover")
Artists He Will Still Be Able To Work With Britney Spears ("Circus", "Hold It Against Me", "Til the World Ends") Ke$ha ("Tik Tok", "Take It Off", "We R Who We R", "Blow") Kelly Clarkson ("Since U Been Gone", "My Life Would Suck...")

It's the best thing that could ever happen to her as a recording artist. It would be too easy for someone as hits-oriented as she is to stay in a Dr. Luke bubble, and she would experience some serious diminishing returns. This way she's sort of forced to branch out. I hope I like what she has coming next, because outside of "Teenage Dream" and "ET," I've been over her for more than a year now.

He really put her on the map, kinda like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for Janet Jackson. It'll be interesting to see who she works with for her next album

She'll be fine. Every one of those songs has co-producers that she is still able to work with, and I think people are kidding themselves if they think Dr. Luke is solely responsible for the success of her songs.

^^ potentially. Think Timbaland/Danja.
I don't think there will be much of a difference to be honest. LFN and CG were Benny Blanco driven, much like most of Ke$ha's stuff is. He provides all those BLEEPS. Max Martin brings in the melodies, Shellback's sound seems pretty similar to Luke's, so... Her team will easily fill the rest of the gaps. He's not ubiquitous enough for it to be a problem.
Jessie J and Taio Cruz are stuffed though.

She'll be fine. He wasn't the only one who gave her hits.

Well damn, it was nice knowing you Katy xoxo :(
jk. Dr. Luke may have crafted majority of her career but it's not like he was giving her some kind of innovative type ish that NO other producer can. He gives her simple catchy pop songs and she can get that from people like Max Martin. It would be kinda funny if she all of a sudden started flopping tho lulz.

What happens if the Sony artists flop? I don't know why Dr. Luke would agree to this. It limits him.

The exclusivity is the price he has to pay for having the major-label backing for his own record label. It's a fair trade IMO. As for Katy, it will be interesting to see how well she does after this. Dr. Luke has producer and writer credits on all but three of her singles so I think whatever she does next could somewhat reveal how much of the writing is really her and how much is someone else. (FWIW I think she puts a good deal of input in her songs).

It is a great opportunity for her to branch out. The only problem is that she won't have a Dr. Luke song to rely on if her other songs fail/don't make #1, but she should still be fine.

Well there are some pretty capable producers out there other than Dr. Luke. I'd love to see her work with Stargate, Bloodshy, Darkchild, RedOne, etc; Maybe even go a little left field and work with Kanye West, No ID, Calvin Harris, Tricky Stewart...

Stargate actually produced Firework, and Tricky Stewart was involved with Circle the Drain, I believe. But yeah, it's not like Dr. Luke is the end all be all.

I love that the thread is just towards Katy Perry and not the hundred other artists he can no longer work with.
That said, LMAO. She's probably shitting bricks. Actually earn your next record, girl and not have it handed to you.

Actually earn your next record, girl and not have it handed to you. Well in fairness I can't think of any other non-Sony artist for whom Dr. Luke has had such a large hand in his/her success. That's why there is so much emphasis on her as opposed to artists like Taio (for whom most people can only name two songs by him), Jessie J (who has yet to really have a big hit here), or Rihanna (who is just now getting around to working with him). Sony's only getting the publishing side of EMI though. Universal is getting the recording side so Katy will be considered a Universal recording artist. There's a possibility that her publishing will end up going to Sony (I don't know who her publishing deal is with) but it would not be the first time an artist was signed under one umbrella and had a publishing deal under another one. I don't think having her publishing under Sony would be enough of a loophole to allow her to work with Dr. Luke, but I could be wrong about that.
