DRAKE SET TO TAKE THE CAKE YM/CM/Universal Republic Rapper’s Delayed Sophomore Album Will Bow with Close to 700k
November 16, 2011
Drake’s ready to Take Care of business.
The rapper, whose sophomore YM/CM/Universal Republic album, Take Care, is the follow-up to last year’s successful bow, Thank Me Later, will debut at #1 with a sales total between 675-725k.
That will make it the third-best bow of the year, after Lady Gaga’s 1.1 million selling Born This Way and his labelmate Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV, which also clocked in slightly over a million on HITS’ Album sales chart.
It’s also the second straight chart-topping bow by a Jewish rapper, following this week’s surprise #1 debut by Mac Miller. Can an M.O.T. reunion be far behind?
The next highest debut will be Columbia’s Glee Christmas, Vol. 2 album, which arrives to sales of around 65-70k, while Decca recording artist Andrea Bocelli’s Concerto: One Night in Central Park live CD should do in the 60-65k area.
Glassnote Records latest discovery, Community star Donald Glover’s hip-hop persona Childish Gambino’s debut album Camp will open with a very impressive 45-50k.
Finally, Trill/Fontana hip-hop artist Baton Rouge rapper Webbie’s third installment of the Savage Life series, is set to bow with 24-27k.
Album sales were up 4% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and up 3% year to date.
Track sales were up 9% vs. last week, up 7% vs. same week last year and up 1-% year to date.
TEA (Track Equivalent Album) sales were up 5% vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and up 5% year to date.
Take that, Spotify haters.

That's the amount I expected Drake to sell. If he holds up in his second week, he may a contender for the week after as well.

Wow! Even higher than I expected for Drake. Those numbers will give him the third-biggest opening week of the year so far.

He's a very strong contender for #1 the following week as well, considering how Thanksgiving week will likely keep the album from falling the typical 65-70%.

The projection actually is 675K-725K, but hopefully it tops 700K- looks better. :)

Well, these numbers are directly in line with what his label predicted...maybe even a little higher.
VERY surprised at Webbie selling that much. No radio play, no promotion, and still doing about 30k.

Yes! 700k is exactly what I predicted for him. I think in his case the leak even gave him more of an advantage because it got such good reviews. It will be cool if he trends upward as the week goes on. I'll LOL if Drake blocks all the new releases from #1 next week

Black Friday week should soften the second-week blow. So, if the album does 700K, a 50% drop would be 350K. Next week's race- with the new albums, Buble, etc.- should be interesting, to say the least.

Very expected numbers for Drake. His last album did 440k and he has gotten even way bigger now. There was no way he would do anything under 500k. I expected 650+. hoping he is indeed 700+!!

Rap sales are on fire. Wale, Mac, now Drake opening huge. Childish Gambino and Webbie looking great this week as well. And Yelawolf, Rick Ross, and Young Jeezy still on deck for the season!

Glee's sales are low, but its not too surprising. I dont think a second xmas album was neccisary though. It's an improvemnet over the sales of the movie soundtrack but it's safe to say glee sales arnt going to be what they used to be anymore.

Yelawolf will be lucky to hit 75k and that's generous Ross/Jeezy will probably do hteir typical 150-250 range. Depending if they can get their hits taking off and timing of holiday sales.

Isn't Rihanna coming out with her album next week? If she debuts at #2... I'ma have to sharpen my knives and cut a bish. ;)

No sophomore slump for Drake. Those numbers are fantastic. Typically rap albums have front-loaded sales but given the fact that next week includes Black Friday, there is a good chance that he'll have a better than normal decrease and perhaps even remain in the top spot.
