In recent years- with record clubs falling to the wayside- RIAA and SoundScan have been closer than in the past (that is, when labels even certify titles). And with digital album sales taken into account, that makes the two sources even more aligned. A hot-selling title like 21, though, will have plenty of copies in stock at outlets, so it could be eligible for 6 platinum before it approaches that mark via SoundScan.

Ah, now THERE is that big 250k+ week the Adele fans wanted to see! Also, nice drop for Amy. Not really a fan, but yes, finally a week over 200k! how many has Adele sold worldwide now? 12m? unbelievable. 13 million is the shipped number by her label.

13 million may be even outdated by now. It has sold around 11-12 and is still selling 500K a week worldwide (and no, that is not a typo). I wouldn't be surprised if updated shipped numbers through the holidays have her up at 15-17 million.

Adele could very well be pushing 40-50k a week in January and could snare another week or two at #1.

^She might be at 6xp now. She was just certified 5x platinum by RIAA Yes. I know. I'm the one who reported here. My 6xp comment is based on shipments to retailers. She just passed 5 million this week. ~280 next week. ~240 the next week. ~ 200 the following week. That's 5.720 million over the next 3 weeks. Add in January sales... She could be at 6xp shipped to retailers.

I think 21 is already the best selling album globally since Usher's Confession overall, and since Norah Jones' Come Away With Me among females, right?

Michael Buble's 'Christmas' Projected to Be 2011's Second-Biggest Selling Album
December 16, 2011
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
As we reported on Dec. 14, Michael Buble's "Christmas" album should hold at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for a fourth week, so say industry prognosticators.
The set could sell another 450,000 to 500,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Dec. 18. The chart's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
With 1.52 million copies sold in the U.S. (after only seven weeks on sale), "Christmas" is already the fourth biggest selling album of the year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. At the rate it is selling, it will end up 2011's second-biggest selling album -- behind only Adele's "21," which has shifted 5 million. Current projections from industry sources suggest "Christmas" will finish the year with around 2.4 million.
Just to recap, here are SoundScan's top 10 best selling albums of 2011, with three weeks left to go in the year: Adele's "21" (5 million), Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (2 million), Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" (1.8 million), Buble's "Christmas" (1.52 million), Jason Aldean's "My Kinda Party" (1.42 million), Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More" (1.34 million), Jay-Z & Kanye West's "Watch the Throne" (1.14 million), Beyonce's "4" (971,000), Drake's "Take Care" (968,000) and Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night" (959,000).
But let's get back to forecasting NEXT week's Billboard 200 chart, shall we?
On SoundScan's Building chart below -- a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (ending Sunday) as reported by six major merchants, Buble is -- wouldn't you know it -- at No. 1.
Adele's "21" is in the runner-up slot on the Building tally, followed by Justin Bieber's "Under the Mistletoe" and Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night." The latter seemingly is profiting from a performance stop on ABC's "Good Morning America" (Dec. 14).
Anthony Hamilton's new "Back to Love" might be the only debut in next week's Billboard 200 top 10 -- at least based on a glance at SoundScan's Building chart. Currently, it's perched at No. 5, which bodes well for its chances of a top 10 arrival on the Billboard 200. Sources say the set could sell around 50,000 in its opening frame.
Nickelback's "Here and Now" is at No. 6 on the Building list, while Drake's "Take Care" holds on at No. 7. "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery is No. 8 with "Clear As Day," the Black Keys' "El Camino" is No. 9 and the "Glee, the Music: The Christmas Album, Volume 2" is No. 10. The "Glee" set should benefit from the show's Christmas-themed episode, which aired on Dec. 13 and featured nine of the album's songs.
Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart
Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title
1 1 Michael Buble "Christmas" 2 3 Adele "21" 3 4 Justin Bieber "Under the Mistletoe" 4 15 Lady Antebellum "Own the Night" 5 NEW Anthony Hamilton "Back to Love" 6 8 Nickelback "Here and Now" 7 7 Drake "Take Care" 8 13 Scotty McCreery "Clear As Day" 9 2 The Black Keys "El Camino" 10 18 soundtrack "Glee, the Music: The Christmas Album, Volume 2"
The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

I think 21 is already the best selling album globally since Usher's Confession overall, and since Norah Jones' Come Away With Me among females, right? Yes, that is correct. Once it passes 16 million (and it will), it will be much easier to track its all-time ranking, as Mediatraffic has such a list for albums that have passed this mark.

21 might actually end up selling 21 million copies worldwide in the end. I'm thinking 25-28 is very doable. I do like Adele and I am happy for her success but I am verging on Adele overload. I'm sure she'll have a great Grammy night and a big spring but I'm really ready for this album to cool down. I'm really not in love with her current single and I did buy the album a few weeks ago and I've already put it away. I think it's a nice album but not the juggernaut that the sells and critical loving would suggest it is. A lot of jumping on the bandwagon as far as I'm concerned. Her voice it was standouts...not so much her songwriting. To clarify...beyond the first two singles. They are great and Rolling In The Deep is probably in my top 20 songs of all time. I also love the second single. Her voice also shines in this simple song....the rest of the album was just okay for me.

Buble set to sell close to what he sold last week? Color me :o I figured the album would drop, as it gained a lot on the back of his holiday special- plus, holiday sales usually peak a couple of weeks before Christmas. The power of Buble. It's the last full week before Christmas Eve, why wouldn't the sales be high, they will probably be just as high the week going into Xmas.

Based on past trends, holiday sales (on the whole) tend to lose some traction in the couple of weeks leading up to Christmas, which makes sense, as people would buy them before the couple of weeks leading up to the holiday, to listen to the music over a longer period of time. But, the biggest sellers (like a Buble) may not be impacted as much.

Buble is gonna take a big tumble the week after Christmas (especially with it being on a Sunday). He might just break the record for the biggest drop from #1

^What is the record?
Last year, Susan Boyle fell from #2 to #31:
Billboard.com:
On the chart reflecting the final Nielsen SoundScan tracking week of 2010, Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" holds at No. 1 for a fifth non-conscutive frame (77,000; down 72%). Last week's No. 2 album, Susan Boyle's Christmas-esque "The Gift," dives to No. 31 with 19,000 (down 92%). Its slide was expected, as most anything resembling a holiday album falls hard in the weeks after Dec. 25. (Half of the "The Gift's" tracklist is made up of Christmas tunes.)
With that in mind, it's also not a shock to see Jackie Evancho's "O Holy Night" slip from No. 4 last week to No. 39 (16,000; down 89%). Same goes for the "Glee" Christmas set, which plows from No. 3 to No. 108 (7,000; down 96%).

Biggest drops from number-one
* (1-37) Light Grenades – Incubus * (1-26) Mission Bell — Amos Lee * (1-25) Showroom of Compassion — Cake * (1-24) Blue Slide Park - Mac Miller * (1-21) The Golden Age of Grotesque – Marilyn Manson * (1-19) The Circle – Bon Jovi * (1-18) The Inspiration – Young Jeezy * (1-16) The Fragile – Nine Inch Nails * (1-15) Greatest Hits – The Notorious B.I.G. * (1-14) Born Again – The Notorious B.I.G.
Hmm, going past 37 might be a little far, but if he maintains #1 next week, no doubt he'll join this list.

Young Jeezy and Common are next week's "big" releases- could YJ threaten Buble's reign at No. 1?

^The New Release Schedule has 222k for YJ and 68k for Common.
222k is a tad high, methinks.
