Yeah, "Thank God I Found You" was an absolutely airplay smash. And getting 98 Degrees on the track when they were at their height was genius.
"My All" was also up there with 1998's top radio hits.
Look, post Soundscan, this has happened all the time. No real news here.

So what? It's not like she released a solo version of 'Thank God I Found You' and then put 98 Degrees on a remix to get it to #1. And if people didn't like 'My All' they wouldn't have bought it. Some of this decade's #1s have been purely sales hits with little airplay. ???

98 Degrees added nothing to the song. They were tacked on to add commercial appeal, taking advantage of the teen pop boom of the late 90s. Do you think she would have used them for the song in 2004?
As for your comment on "My All", it is quite possible people DID buy the single if they didn't love that particular song. Columbia didn't release "Butterfly" or "Breakdown" as commercial singles noting that they would compromise Mariah's #1 Hot 100 streak, but conspicuously added them to the "My All" single with much promotional and marketing fanfare, so you were in essence, getting three hit songs on one 'cheap' single. There were plenty of articles in Billboard about this back in May 1998. Marketing.
As for sales vs airplay #1s, I was replying to the poster who said that most of Mariah's songs were #1 for weeks - well, not the ones that most people take issue with for getting to #1 'via desperate tactics'.

First of all there is absolutely no proof that 98 Degrees is the reason the song went to #1. In fact the Urban remix of the song (which didn't feature them) was the most popular version of the song because it was played a lot on Urban stations. And 98 Degrees weren't exactly on fire (in fact this was their first and only #1 hit and prior to it they had only had 1 major hit). I could say you might be right if she had featured Backstreet Boys or NSYNC as they were way more popular, but she didn't. Second, 'Butterfly' wasn't on the My All CD single. And as for 'Breakdown', the single was a double A-side with 'Breakdown' seeing a commercial release months after it had peaked in R&B airplay. Not to mention the cause for 'My All's sales could be attributed more to its resung remixes than to 'Breakdown' being on it.

The "My All" CD single that I have includes 2 versions of "My All," a "Breakdown" remix, a "The Roof" remix and a "Fly Away" remix.

I didn't say 98 degrees was the reason it got to #1. But she was hedging her bets on the boyband trend without going all the way (BSB and N Sync) with something that would have alienated her urban audience. To my earlier point, the group added nothing but name recognition. I was responding to darkness who said that Mariah never resorted to asking a pop star for help. Same with Westlife in the UK. She has. No big deal. ANd no need to get hyper.
Now, you are correct, "Butterfly" - although originally planned to be on the My All cassingle (see Hot 100 Spotlight, 5/98) was jettisoned last minute. Look, I know you were just 7 at the time, but a lot of us in the music business then were amused - nothing more - at Columbia's (and later Virgin & Island's) attempts to get Mariah to #1.

Pulse didn't exist, but Pulse grew out of the old Radio & Records music message-boards, and many of us were members of that and saw the Mariah Loverboy chart drama unfolding. It was one and a half weeks before her famous TRL meltdown. I couldn't remember if I was even on RROnline at that time. I think I joined later. Was I on EFG when all the drama unleashed? I don't even remember LOL. It was a long time ago. I do sometimes wish we or I had saved some of those threads though. I also didn't realize that tons of the people here were RRonline members. Most I remember stopped coming years ago or when we transferred to Pulse :'( :'( :'( :'( So, hello everyone old RR people!! I forget what name I even had on it ha ha.

Name the mariah's #1 songs via desperate tactics. A cheap remix featuring random rappers? Check Discount the single? Check But this song never topped the chart so those "desperate tactics" don't count, right? Oh, well.

Uhhhh... when being asked to name a song of Mariah's that got to number one because of 'desperate tactics', a single that didn't get to number one doesn't really count. ;)

Other than payola, does anyone recall or heard of 'desperate tactics' to get a song up the Billboard charts PRIOR to Soundscan? One hears about how people have "manipulated the charts" since they began, but I'm not sure I know of any examples from before 1991.
Before 1970's "American Top 40" took off, the Billboard charts weren't really broadcast to the general public, and thus the bragging rights associated with chart feats didn't have the same media punch.

FYI for clarifications: There WAS a So-So Def remix to "Shake it Off," and that's the one that was part of the "Win Dinner With Mimi" promotion that MariahCarey.com had running. To enter, one had to buy the remix on iTunes and send the receipt in. it didn't get the job done, though- hence, the earlier comment about not all marketing tactics working. Pre-"Loverboy," there were articles on Sony's deep discounts and even Mimi's soon-to-be biggest supporter Roger Friedman wrote an article on it (this was before Mimi got with Benny Medina, I believe).
To tie this in to the gimmicks happening today with "remixes" and such, RiRi's and Perry's labels are just as interested- perhaps more- in breaking records as Sony was in the 90s.

Can we all just agree that shit like this happens all the time because they charts are a game played by the record labels and just leave this God damn conversation to die in peace?
Thank you! :)

Hilarious Some people. How is mariah desperate???? Did she ever release a LAME remix or ask a pop star for help? Check mariah's #1 songs. lol Most of them were #1 for WEEKS. She doesn't need discounts, lame remix or feats to get a #1. LOL. You don't know Mariah very well, do you? Mariah started playing the #1 game way back in the 90s. She was still playing them in late 2005.

I really don't get this stupid argument that is still going on here. People can throw around comments and accusations calling this situation with Katy and her label pathetic and lame and yet it has been happening for years. I do remember the Loverboy situation and how much of a stir it cause the R&R board back in the day because the single was discounted. Think of this year's Born This Way debacle. That's how crazy it was. Back then, Mariah was known for having odd or "creative" tactics to get to #1. It just so happened that Loverboy didn't make it. But they tried! Why are there arguments and denials over that? Is it because some people throw out these negative comments but then when some are returned, they can't handle them? Stop with the stupid argument. Yes, these situations reek of cheapness and yes it's not really fair. But it's how they're doing it. Every song or itself.

Everybody here loves music, so we can talk about the good side of this. Forget the past, forget the marketing, just talk about music.

Is Nicki's single a promoted single, or just a "buzz" single, cuz it doesnt seem to be going anywhere, or is that normal for her?
