IIRC, that's how it used to be. Songs never got purged. They just continued to fall and would eventually move to gold status 1.5-2 years later. I'm not sure exactly when purging became a thing, but it's "fairly" recent, as in, within the past 10-15 years.
Personally, I'd prefer nothing ever go recurrent/gold and we got an entire top 100 instead of a top 50, but I know we're never getting that. That being said, I enjoy the addition of purges just so we can see more tracks enter the chart faster, but it bugs me how there's very little consistency in purging rules. This resurgence of "Ex" is just another track in a long list of weird purging exceptions. I would absolutely understand its reappearance if it was climbing again like "Shallow" earlier this year, but that's clearly not the case.
Perhaps her label is about to push it to pop again for some reason, so Mediabase brought it back? But I would confused on that decision since there's no reason to repush something that just fell out of the top 40 with no hype to propel a second run. Plus, she just released a new track that has more radio appeal. I don't know, it's all very weird.
Of course there's also the possibility that this is just a glitch or error on Mediabase or AllAccess's part and it will disappear again tomorrow. Remember that time some random ass rock song from a band no one had heard of before debuted on nearly every format a few years back?

Purging is more recent than that. Probably even five years? At the very most it was this decade.

Purging is more recent than that. Probably even five years? At the very most it was this decade. I believe Katy Perry's "Thinking of You" was purged, and that would have been 2009. And Ke$ha's "Blah Blah Blah" in 2010.

Oh :O That's a surprise. I remember when the Top 100 used to be posted, songs were purged after falling out of the top 50. That happened for a while before songs started getting purged from under 40. I don't have a great sense of time over the past 10 years though. It could certainly be longer than I remember.

Don't worry, when I first started thinking of songs to check, I initially went for, like, "Hips Don't Lie" and "Promiscuous" era songs before I realized that those songs weren't from 10 years ago like I was wanting.

If you don’t like purging, then there’s American Top 40, though they’re pretty inconsistent: some songs stay on months past leaving the official Mediabase chart, while others get pulled off from relatively high positions while still on MB’s top 40.
As of last weekend’s show, “Girls Like You”, “Love Lies”, and “Youngblood”, for examples, were still on that countdown (and “Better Now” just dropped off.). Meanwhile, many songs that make the top 40 and even top 30 on MB never make AT40 at all due largely to these long past their peak songs refusing to leave.

That's why I prefer a fresher music charts, cause it would get monotonous for a song staying on the charts for far too damn long.

Hmm, seems like Narwhals hasn't posted a Kworb-like chart since two months ago. I know! Maybe I can fill the missing voids by making my own!-- Would that be for a different topic?

Meanwhile, many songs that make the top 40 and even top 30 on MB never make AT40 at all due largely to these long past their peak songs refusing to leave. The AT40 doesn't have recurrent rules. Their chart mimics fairly closely to Mediabase's top 40 with recurrents, but they're delayed by, like, 2 weeks or so and sometimes are a bit off by a position here or there due to the AT40 having a slightly different panel than Mediabase's chart. For example, this was this past weekend's AT 40: 1. Jonas Brothers - Sucker 2. Sam Smith - Dancing with a Stranger 3. Ava Max - Sweet but Psycho 4. Post Malone - Wow. 5. Ariana Grande - break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored 6. Lil Nas X - Old Town Road 7. Taylor Swift - ME! 8. Ariana Grande - 7 rings 9. The Chainsmokers - Who Do You Love 10. Halsey - Without Me
11. Khalid - Talk 12. benny blanco - Eastside 13. Mabel - Don't Call Me Up 14. Marshmello - Here with Me 15. Shawn Mendes - If I Can't Have You 16. Ed Sheeran - I Don't Care 17. Khalid - Better 18. Billie Eilish - when the party's over 19. Post Malone - Sunflower 20. Jonas Brothers - Cool
21. Ellie Goulding - Close to Me 22. Panic! At the Disco - Hey Look Ma, I Made It 23. Dean Lewis - Be Alright 24. Daddy Yankee - Con Calma 25. Panic! At the Disco - High Hopes 26. Lauv - i'm so tired... 27. Lady Gaga - Shallow 28. BTS - Boy with Luv 29. Ariana Grande - thank u, next 30. Billie Eilish - bad guy
31. Marshmello - Happier 32. Alessia Cara - Out of Love 33. Travis Scott - SICKO MODE 34. Bryce Vine - La La Land 35. 5 Seconds of Summer - Youngblood 36. NOTD - So Close 37. Khalid - Love Lies 38. AJ Mitchell - All My Friends 39. Lizzo - Juice 40. Maroon 5 - Girls Like You This was Mediabase's top 40 with recurrents for May 19, 2019: 1. Sam Smith - Dancing with a Stranger 2. Jonas Brothers - Sucker 3. Ava Max - Sweet but Psycho 4. Ariana Grande - break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored 5. Post Malone - Wow. 6. Lil Nas X - Old Town Road 7. Taylor Swift - ME! 8. Ariana Grande - 7 rings 9. Khalid - Talk 10. The Chainsmokers - Who Do You Love
11. Halsey - Without Me 12. benny blanco - Eastside 13. Ed Sheeran - I Don't Care 14. Marshmello - Here with Me 15. Shawn Mendes - If I Can't Have You 16. Post Malone - Sunflower 17. Mabel - Don't Call Me Up 18. Khalid - Better 19. Jonas Brothers - Cool 20. Billie Eilish - when the party's over
21. Ellie Goulding - Close to Me 22. Panic! At the Disco - High Hopes 23. Panic! At the Disco - Hey Look Ma, I Made It 24. Marshmelloe - Happier 25. Daddy Yankee - Con Calma 26. 5 Seconds of Summer - Youngblood 27. Lauv - i'm so tired... 28. BTS - Boy with Luv 29. Billie Eilish - bad guy 30. Post Malone - Better Now
31. Khalid - Love Lies 32. Maroon 5 - Girls Like You 33. Alessia Cara - Out of Love 34. Ariana Grande - thank u, next 35. [I'm not sure what was here. I want to say Travis Scott - SICKO MODE] 36. Bryce Vine - La La Land 37. Dua Lipa - New Rules 38. AJ Mitchell - All My Friends 39. Bazzi - Mine 40. Lizzo - Juice There's clearly differences, but only by a position or two here or there because AT40 uses a slightly smaller panel than Mediabase. Personally, I like the chart without recurrent rules since that more accurately depicts what pop radio is playing than the chart without recurrent rules. Believe me, I love seeing songs get kicked out to allow others to appear, but simply so I can see how they are performing. If I were able to see an entire top 100 with no recurrent rules, I'd be just as happy. Makes me reminisce on the days when we all had access to Mediabase's website through some UCLA class's password, lol. It appears that Ex and Power Is Power will be purged. 'Power Is Power' should be purged, yes, but 'Ex' was bulleted last week so it should not. I'm wondering if the reason Ex was added back was because it wasn't supposed to be purged in the first place. Mediabase just isn't very good with keeping up with its own purging rules, I think.

Based on what we knew, 'Ex' shouldn't have been purged. However; there may have been changes to the Pop panel that would have affected spins/positions, as we could see from 'Cross Me' debuting at #40 but as of this Sunday its LW position was #39, which means that Kiana may have been unbulleted after whatever correction/change to the chart was done, which would have technically made this past Sunday her second week unbulleted (and thus, a purge). But we don't know if that was the case, and this is just needless messiness.

Absolutely if Ex returned midweek only to be purged again this weekend. Especially since, per AllAccess, the published chart has not been changed to reflect Ex's return.

Tell me more That's really all I remember. I don't remember the band name or song title or even the exact year it happened, but it was quite awhile back. Far enough back that songs were still being released on Tuesdays, I believe. Basically what happened is that when the charts came through, almost every format had this brand new entry in the lower region from a band no one had heard of before and it baffled all of us. Turned out to be an error and the song shouldn't have been charting anywhere and was subsequently removed from the charts a day or two later.

Ok I don't know a ton about this BUT Kiana Lede just released a new EP tonight and even though "Ex" was featured in her 2018 EP Selfless, it became the closer for this new Myself EP, stylized as "EX" this time around. Maybe that's part of their effort to push "EX" into the Hot 100. Could be an indicator that this is all part of a plan.

Unless they're planning to re-send the song to pop radio, including it on a new EP isn't going to do anything for its current radio performance (it has actually been speeding up its descent since getting put back).

Once “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” falls out of the Top 10, it will be the first time Ariana Grande is not in the Top 10 on CHR since May 21, 2018 (when No Tears Left To Cry entered the Top 10). I wonder where this is in terms of a record?

I wonder where this is in terms of a record? I'd bet Katy Perry and Lady Gaga both have had a much longer run in their Teenage Dream and The Fame/Monster eras. Rihanna also had a while there where she was releasing albums so close together, it wouldn't surprise me if she had a long run too. Bruno Mars would be another one to look at. Lemme go take a look and see what I can find.

I think Kelly Clarkson holds the record for the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 on CHR.

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream California Gurls entered the top 10 on May 30, 2010. Teenage Dream entered the top 10 on August 22, 2010, two weeks before CG left. Firework entered the top 10 on November 21, 2010, one week before TD left. Aww, damn, there was a two week period between Firework and E.T., but there's still a long time between E.T. and the end of the era so let's keep looking. E.T. entered the top 10 on March 27, 2011. Last Friday Night entered the top 10 on July 3, 2011, two weeks before E.T. left. Oop. The One That Got Away hadn't entered the top 10 until 7 weeks after LFN left. Let's start again, I guess. The One That Got Away entered the top 10 on November 20, 2011. Aaand Part of Me entered the top 10 three weeks after TOTGA left. I'm giving up on the TD era, lol.
Katy Perry - Prism Roar - September 1, 2013-November 24, 2013 Unconditionally - November 17, 2013 and December 1-15, 2013 Dark Horse - breaks the chain, doesn't enter until January 19, 2014 Since there was only one more top 10, I'm doing looking for this one, lol.
Lady Gaga - The Fame/Monster Just Dance - December 7, 2008-March 8, 2009 and March 22, 2009 Poker Face - March 15, 2009-June 14, 2009 LoveGame - June 7, 2009-August 23, 2009 Paparazzi breaks the chain. Didn't enter top 10 until October 4, 2009, but let's keep looking, there's still 3 more singles to check. Paparazzi - October 4, 2009-December 13, 2009 Bad Romance - December 13, 2009-March 21, 2010 Telephone - February 7, 2010-May 2, 2010 Alejandro - May 9, 2010-July 11, 2010 Pretty epic, but doesn't reach Ariana's streak.
Rihanna Oop, she doesn't really have a streak worth mentioning.
Bruno Mars Also doesn't have a remarkable streak. Too much time between Grenade and The Lazy Song and WAAAY too much time between It Will Rain and Locked Out of Heaven for anything worth noting.
Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway Breakaway - October 1, 2004-January 21, 2005 Since U Been Gone - January 21, 2005-June 10, 2005 Behind These Hazel Eyes - May 20, 2005-September 23, 2005 Because of You - September 30, 2005-February 17, 2006 Walk Away - February 17, 2006-May 19, 2006 There it is! Kelly's streak is longer than Ariana's.
And finally, just to see...
Taylor Swift - 1989 Shake It Off - August 31, 2014-December 7, 2014 Blank Space - November 23, 2014-March 8, 2015 Style - February 8, 2015-April 26, 2015 Bad Blood - breaks the streak, enters May 31, 2015, leaves August 30, 2015 Wildest Dreams - doesn't enter until September 20, 2015
Crazy that none of these massive eras were able to compete against Breakaway until now and even now Ariana still missed breaking the record by, like, 6 months. Breakaway truly was an outstanding era on pop.

You throw a little observation out there, thinking you're a nerd for noticing, and find out that others case just as much as you.:) Austin, you are awesome for looking into this, thank you!

The most insane part of the Breakaway record is seeing how damn near perfectly the single runs lie next to each other (only SUBG and BTHE have more than one week of overlap). You can't buy that kind of timing.

The Chainsmokers appears to have a decent run in the Top 10 as well.
[Roses - 1/3/2016 to 3/20/2016 (peak #3)]
Streak begins here
Don't Let Me Down - 5/8/2016 to 9/4/2016 (peak #1 for 3 weeks) Closer - 9/4/2016 to 2/5/2017 (peak #1 for 10 non-consecutive weeks) Paris - 2/12/2017 to 5/14/2017 (peak #3 for 3 weeks) Something Just Like This - 4/9/2017 to 7/2/2017 (peak #1 for 1 week)
61 straight weeks inside the Top 10, and they have 2 songs inside the Top 10 in 7 of those weeks. Amazing that 6 of those weeks were shared by "Paris" and "Something Just Like This", considering SJLT was released "too soon" and there was some "fear" of it eating up spins for "Paris".

On the one hand I'm grateful to have not missed the update while I was out tonight. On the other hand, why is Mediabase so late?
