bringing on a Frontiers Records Music label update for 2021..
Chez Kane - 'CHEZ KANE' Female fronted hard rock. Sounds like Vixen and Lita Ford. Easily my favorite release of the month
Kreek - "KREEK' 80's Hair Metal mixed with Blues Rock with ballads like Bon Jovi and Poison.
The Nova Hawks - 'Redemption' Female fronted Hard Blues rock. Sounds like Pretty Reckless. tracks to check out. "Voodoo" and "Redemption"
for other new releases check out the Frontiers Records New music preview on youtube.
This is the compilation from December. Includes upcoming albums from Denis De Young, Hardline, Edge Of Paradise, L.A. Guns, Crazy Lixx........ready for it? Night Ranger. So I'm pretty much set with Rock for 2021.

I feel like this might be more disheartening to some of y’all than the whole Trapt situation. I was curious to learn about him...and ooooh boy, he’s one unstable mf...comes from a wealthy family, taken to court for millions in fraud, anti-gay, spousal abuser & misogynistic in general ... get him to a psych ward now!

Don’t forget the newly-surfaced sexual assault accusations as well. Yikes.

Pearl Charles released her second album "Magic Mirror" last Friday. It's excellent. If you like Weyes Blood, give it a try.

I really liked Matthew Sweet back in my middle/high school days. Girlfriend, Sick of Myself and Evangeline got a lot of radio play on Atlanta alt radio back then since he came out of the Athens music scenel. I'll be sure to look this one up to see if I still dig his power-pop sound.

So I've been doing these for a few weeks now, but I've been tracking the stream counts on Spotify for the songs on the three rock radio formats, and figured I'd share my findings with you guys. I may or may not make this a weekly thing. Future posts will be in the Mediabase thread. Numbers are by thousands. Criteria: 1) The song must be in the Mediabase top 50. Songs rising below the top 50 are also included but are subject to removal once they start losing spins. 2) Radio edits/remixes (usually I only include this if the remix has guest vocals or is a version promoted to radio) are accounted for. 3) No songs that have peaked ages ago are included, to be fresh. So no Take What You Want on Alt, Someone You Loved (AND numerous other alt/HAC crossovers below the top 50 that have peaked) on AAA, etc. For this week: Top gainers: The Kid LAROI - Without You 19969 Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am 14417 Ed Sheeran - Afterglow 11007 Glass Animals - Heat Waves 10570 Machine Gun Kelly & blackbear - My Ex's Best Friend 7107 Clairo - Sofia 5873 347aidan - Dancing in My Room 5133 carolesdaughter - Violent 4812 Wallows f/ Clairo - Are You Bored Yet? 4576 Fousheé - Deep End 4138 Top % gainers: Weezer - All My Favorite Songs 175.7314974 Dayglow - Close to You 55.08196721 Of Mice & Men - Obsolete 54.16149068 Hiss Golden Messenger - Sanctuary 52.36486486 MOD SUN f/ Avril Lavigne - Flames 48.30438379 Like a Storm - Empire of Ashes 42.10526316 Foo Fighters - Waiting on a War 39.89145183 Chevelle - Self Destructor 30.27888446 The Pretty Reckless f/ Tom Morello - And so It Went 28.55491329 carolesdaughter - Violent 27.66312159 Added: A Day to Remember - Everything We Need Black Pumas - Colors Chet Faker - Low Gus Dapperton - Medicine Inhaler - When It Breaks Jon Batiste - I Need You Kathleen Edwards - Glenfern Keith Wallen - Dream Away Kim Dracula - Paparazzi Ovtlier - Who We Are Parker Millsap - The Real Thing Passenger - Sword from the Stone Pearl Jam - Get It Back Sylvan Esso - Rooftop Dancing Tai Verdes - Drugs The Avalanches f/ MGMT & Johnny Marr - The Divine Chord The Neighbourhood - Stargazing Vajra - Maya Yung Gravy - Oops! Fun and interesting video from a producer breaking down 10 of the songs on the Spotify Rock This playlist. The comments section is full of grumpy people, hating on anything post-1990s (even though half the list involves 90s era bands or musicians), but I really like how he breaks down chord progressions and tries to find something he likes about all the songs.
Songs included (with a couple of interesting notes):
Weezer - "All My Favorite Songs" (makes an interesting comparison to the chord progression and how Radiohead often uses a similar one but Weezer stayed in a major key instead of shifting minor) kennyhoopla f/ Travis Barker - "Estella" (loves that there is live, non-digitized drumming) Aaron Jones - "Mercy" (compares to old school I Prevail - "Every Time You Leave" (points out an unusual writing choice of having the chorus start on the same chord as the last line of the verse, but also how it's more compressed to make it louder) grandson - "Dirty" (discusses some of the electronic influence - actually compares a little to early Killers) MOD SUN f/ Avril Lavinge - "Flames" (likes the rhythm, comments on the heavy pop overtones and high production value compared to other rock songs) Royal Blood - "Typhoons" (I laughed at him trying to play the riff not realizing that they play a modded up bass not a guitar - though he did nail it; he really liked this one) Foo Fighters - "Waiting on a War" (comments on how rare it is in modern music to hear chord modulations) Pretty Reckless f/ Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil - "Only Love Can Save Me Now" (geeks out over the 7/4 riff, Soundgarden-style riffs, big drum sound) Pretty Reckless f/ Tom Morello - "And So It Went" (more mixed meter, really praises Taylor's singing and of course geeks out on Morello's solo)

I don't agree with his analysis of everything but he definitely knows his stuff and he knows how to make an entertaining YouTube vid for a Boomer.

I've definitely gone down the rabbit hole watching his series on "What Makes This Song Great." Rhink there are nearly 100 of them now. He gets the track files for rock hits from the 70s through 2000s and breaks them down - chord analysis, production decisions, isolating the different tracks so the lay person can hear how songs come together. I don't play guitar or piano, but I do have a background on music (high school and college band) so I geek out on the theory behind these hits.

One thing that seems to be commonplace on this forum is complaining about a certain company, and, moreover, a certain station, 92.3 whose call letters are WNYL. In terms of determining what charts, WNYL is perhaps the most influential station ever - even more than KROQ in its prime, because WNYL's playlist is mirrored on the other 12 Entercom Alts on the Billboard and Mediabase panels for 11 hours on each of those stations (thus falling one hour short of violating known BB and MB rules on block programming). The end result is that regardless of a formal add or not by these Entercom Alts, if WNYL plays it, they play it too. WNYL's influence on the chart, and the rest of the format, is massive considering their mediocre-at-best ratings in New York City. However, I should mention that mediocre ratings in NYC is a world away from much of the country. Kings of Leon's "The Bandit" being spun 50 times by KPNT (St. Louis) equates to 20 spins for "Estella//" by WNYL in terms of audience, for example. Imagine if WNYL was actually a popular station in NYC! But what would make WNYL a popular station in NYC? That's what I'm trying to do with this (lengthy) post. I do think Program Director Mike Kaplan has the right idea with how to program WNYL. The most successful Alternative station in NYC was none other than Z100 from 1993-96 which played a legendary mix of music from White Zombie and Rancid to Madonna and Del Amitri. New Yorkers, presumably, want their Alternative to be pop-friendly. No other Alternative in NYC has lasted as long with the format - WNYL only recently passed Z100's 3 year mark with the format. (Yes K-Rock was a thing but that was a Mainstream Rock station, and it had a spotty history of flipping back and forth format-wise). Kaplan is also phasing 90's music out along with all Alternative staple artists from before 2015 (the exception is Cage the Elephant with their current single "Skin & Bones", but that may be due to the Grammy win. Machine Gun Kelly and Porter Robinson also technically count but they weren't sent to Alternative until recently). If you're an older artist with no recent pop crossover, you will get blocked by WNYL, which by extension curtails your Entercom airplay, assuming Kaplan (who is also the format captain) even allows the other Entercoms to add you (which he largely isn't). He is also seemingly completely against the idea of crossover songs from Active and AAA, as any artist with too much of a presence on either of those formats struggles to get a toehold on WNYL's playlist (and even those that do, like Bakar, don't usually get to hang around for long or even achieve medium airplay). Crossover songs are usually from CHR (an inverse of the norm). The thing is that I think a lot of this is necessary to keep the Alternative format alive. My contention is that Kaplan's curation skills are nonexistent, and he's going overboard on his changes (and going too fast). I also think he is misunderstanding the Zoomer listener as well - from what I can tell Zoomers do not think older songs are as problematic as their Millennials forebearers, and many Zoomers I interact with express awareness or even are fans of many veteran Alternative artists. Hell, we even saw "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac charge back to a second peak of #12 on the Hot 100, and that song is older than dirt. That was done by Zoomers, as is the surprise popularity of "Dear Maria, Count Me In" by All Time Low and "Can You Feel My Heart" by Bring Me The Horizon. So I don't think older songs are a deal-breaker for Zoomers - what matters is whether they like the older songs. Below, I am sharing WNYL's top songs (circa yesterday). You will notice heavy airplay of recurrent tracks from the last couple of years. From my perspective, this list is a disaster. There are no staple artists to keep older listeners wanting to tune in, and very few artists on their second album cycle, while keeping recurrent tracks from 2018-20 cranked on medium or even heavy airplay. I feel like this playlist comes across as simultaneously stale and tryhard at the same time. Clearly WNYL is trying to become an FM Alt Nation, but doesn't provide enough current airplay to be a true music discovery outlet. Why listen to WNYL's CHR-lite when you have Z100? Why listen to WNYL for music discovery when there isn't that much of it? Why listen to WNYL if you are older and want to hear Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters, but get "Everlong" or "Sex On Fire" for the umpteenth time instead of new songs by those bands that you would like to hear? This feels like a station which is having an identity crisis. WNYL wants to segue from "Hot Girl Bummer" to "Helena" and not make it seem out of place. And yet, this station is what is attempting to steer the Alternative format right now, which is why the chart looks like it suffers from schizophrenia. Worst of all, the station isn't working - its listeners seem to be drawn to WNYL due to a lack of options for rock music in the city, and it isn't peeling off any of the pop listeners from Z100, even with hiring a Z100 DJ for mid-days. But what are the solutions here? I think WNYL needs to dial back on the pop a bit. Not completely, mind you. But I think there needs to be more indie and alt-rock in the mix - and that WNYL needs to truly offer itself as a place of music discovery instead of the bizarre half-measure it's currently in. WNYL needs to be a trend-setter, not chasing Alt Nation's coattails with a few cherry-picked songs from Alt Nation's playlist while playing Z100's sloppy seconds. I also think a complete phaseout of 80's/90's music is ill-advised - there needs to be a bridge between older and younger listeners. This is what I would be programming on WNYL if I ran it: Heavy (50+ spins): Cage The Elephant - Skin And Bones Glass Animals - Heat Waves MGK - my ex's best friend Clairo - Sofia grandson - Dirty Medium (25-35 spins)Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am (preparing to phase out) Royal Blood - Trouble's Coming (also preparing to phase out) Weezer - All My Favorite Songs Kings of Leon - The Bandit KennyHoopla f/Travis Barker - Estella// The Knocks f/Foster The People - All About You Bakar - 1st Time Foushee - Deep End Foo Fighters - Waiting On A War Benny Blanco - You Light (15-20 spins)Backseat Lovers - Kilby Girl (preparing to move up) Kid LAROI - Without You (also preparing to move up) Nothing, Nowhere - fake friend carolesdaughter - violent Phoebe Bridgers - Kyoto Black Pumas - Colors LILHUDDY - The Eulogy of You and Me (add) Porter Robinson - Look At The Sky MOD SUN f/Avril Lavigne - Flames bbno$ - help herself (add) Culture Wars - Leave Me Alone AJR - Way Less Sad (add) DREAMERS f/DeathByRomy - True Crime ONR f/Sarah Barathel - Must Stop Night/overnight Light (7-10 spins)JAWNY - Sabotage The Dirty Nil - Blunt Force Concussion (it made BB, so I'd give it an overnight add) Bad Suns - Baby Blue Shades The Happy Fits - Hold Me Down Goldpark - Beautiful Desperation (add) Run The Jewels f/Royal Blood - the ground below Frances Forever - Space Girl Sara Kay - Remember That Night? Weathers - C'est La Vie Manchester Orchestra - Bed Head (add) Chevelle - Self destructor (it would have made BB Alt last week because I wouldn't have pulled the jxdn "Driver's License" stunt, and I'd give it a night/overnight add in response) Basically I would concentrate on carrying between 35-45 currents, with the goal of keeping a constant flow of new music into the station to encourage new music discovery while also paying attention to streaming hits (Spotify and Apple Music streams give a pretty good indicator of what TikTok hits have actual staying power) and bringing them into the rotation. I would keep mixing in poppy fare with indie fare as my primary points of emphasis. If an edgier rock song makes the BB Alt chart I would give it a shot at night to see if it actually has staying power on the station, you never know. I'd also keep staple acts in the rotation if Zoomers still appreciate these acts, and use them as a bridge between the older and younger extremes of my audience. Days would feature more classic tracks from across the Alternative spectrum with most current airplay being my heavies and mediums with a light occasionally sneaking its way into a set. Nights would be more indie and new music focused with the full selection of current songs available. I would like to think this would help with enticing listeners as old as 50 or as young as 15 to tune in as they'll hear many of their favorite songs with fresh sounds. Sample Hour (11 AM): 1. Muse - Uprising 2. Panic! At The Disco - Miss Jackson 3. Benny Blanco - You (C) 4. Matt Maeson - Hallucinogenics (R) 5. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun 6. Cage The Elephant - Skin and Bones (C) *break* 7. Foals - Mountain At My Gates 8. Peach Tree Rascals - Mariposa (R) 9. The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm 10. Kings of Leon - The Bandit (C) 11. Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness 12. Clairo - Sofia (C) Sample Hour (9 PM): 1. nothing, nowhere - fake friend (C) 2. Green Day - When I Come Around 3. Phoebe Bridgers - Kyoto (C) 4. 24KGoldn & Iann Dior - Mood (R) 5. Frances Forever - Space Girl (C) 6. The Knocks f/Foster The People - All About You (C) *break* 7. Porter Robinson - Look At The Sky (C) 8. Linkin Park - Breaking The Habit 9. All Time Low f/blackbear - Monsters (C but being treated like an R) 10. Backseat Lovers - Kilby Girl (C) 11. Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks 12. Glass Animals - Heat Waves (C) Anyway, I think this WNYL would be like a Alt-heavy Z100 for a new generation, and strengthen the format as a whole for years to come, as opposed to coming close to killing it or turning it into something unrecognizable as what seems to be happening right now. Then again, I am not a radio professional and I could very well be talking out of my ass, and this giant post was an even bigger waste of time than I thought. But I hope a few of you out there see value in my word vomit.

I think its a good thought exercise. Essentially, programming like a CHR station in terms of focus on major focus on current, heavy rotation of top 10 or so songs and light recurrent/gold. But instead of CHR filling the classifications, building it on alt, with an indie pop/alt pop lean.
I don't theoretically hate the idea. Even in what I call the alt prime (93-97 or so), the music was focused on a young audience and kept very current. Which is why I loved it at the time.
Now that I'm the old fart, I appreciate the NPR and noncomm AAA approach, but I think a flagship alt station could be very successful programming with a CHR mentality towards spins and currents. But not ignoring the golds or heritage acts that can still deliver relevant currents.
Edit it add: I'm also seeing some noncomm AAA start to carve out an urban alt format. This could also be a trend to watch given the popularity of hip hop and urban on pop, but giving a more indie/alt spin. A place where SZA, Tyler the Creator, etc. Could also mix in with the underground urban sound that trap currently smothers.

I would also like to share my final thoughts and solution. It may not be what the modern alt listener exactly wants, but I know it’ll cater to somebody.
There are a few reasons alt is in decline right now (at least in my opinion). My biggest grievances besides the obvious: not enough currents and stale recurrents. Entercom is the obvious punching bag here but the other radio corporations are not innocent. One thing I noticed about Alt 105.7 (Atlanta) before it went defunct and 94.5 The Buzz (Houston), which are both iHeartRadio alts, is that they have seriously stale playlists, though 94.5 seems to be improving in the currents department. Besides a few exceptions, it seemed like they were blasting through a greatest hits playlist. I think a more varied recurrent playlist and relying mainly on a varied selection of current songs would encourage stable listenership and bring in more listeners.
Now onto currents. To preface this upcoming part, I’ve been told Entercom’s target demographic is 25-34, which is pretty baffling. This is if I’m not misremembering. I’m in the Gen-Z demographic, and I thought they were trying to target people MY age, not people a decade older than me. I absolutely hate their programming choices, and though I may be a minority in this case, I cannot see someone in their mid-twenties tuning in to one of those alts. They’re so obviously pandering to younger people with what they add, and it comes off as desperate. Anyway, some of these currents suck majorlu, and this pop shift was happening on a somewhat smaller scale as far back as the mid-2010s, even before Entercom. Seriously, AJR and X Ambassadors? Even later Imagine Dragons was pushing it. People have always been trying to make alt poppier, but never to this extent. Now even deeper into the rabbit hole we have Royal & the Serpent, Marshmello, benny blanco, and The Kid LAROI. Nice CHR playlist, terrible alt playlist. Basically, poppifying alt is a terrible idea.
I personally think alt should go more indie rock than pop, but I don’t see a reason to discard the alt-oriented indie pop. Basically, my dream alt is something like WEQX but slightly less AAA-leaning and slightly more rock-leaning. The recurrents can be more of a mixed bag though. I think this allows for discovery in both new and old music, with some favorites thrown in.
Sample Hour 1: 1. Culture Wars - Leave Me Alone (C) 2. Manchester Orchestra - Bed Head (C) 3. Wallows - Pleaser 4. Dayglow - Close to You (C) 5. Royal Blood - Typhoons (C) 6. Chevelle - Self destructor (C) 7. Snow Patrol - Hands Open 8. Vampire Weekend - Cousins 9. Kings of Leon - The Bandit (C) 10. The Happy Fits - Hold Me Down (C) 11. Cage the Elephant - Skin and Bones (C) 12. In the Valley Below - Peaches
Sample Hour 2: 1. July Talk - The News (C) 2. Bartees Strange - Boomer (C) 3. Crash Kings - Mountain Man 4. Placebo - Every You Every Me 5. Frances Forever - Space Girl (C) 6. K.Flay - Blood in the Cut 7. nothing, nowhere - Fake Friend (C) 8. The Dirty Nil - Blunt Force Concussion (C) 9. Black Lab - Wash It Away 10. Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister 11. Of Monsters and Men - Alligator 12. Foo Fighters - Waiting on a War (C)
This may also sound like ramblings but it made sense to me. I feel like a playlist somewhat like that would draw in all types of people, younger and older.

Honestly if I were running WNYL or any other Alternative in a coastal or super urban environment I'd start taking fliers out on the urban alt artists. A lot of them are showing up on AAAs - Bakar is simply the most mainstream of them all. I think rap and soul mix with the rock-leaning sound of Alternative fairly well and I think we could be seeing several crossovers of this vein happen, especially if we have a major breakout hit.

Not really related, but a random question that I have had, especially since 'Without You' happened: how did 'Hey There Delilah' become such a huge hit on Alternative? Songs like 'Rehab' or 'Young Folks' already feel a bit soft for the 2007 chart, but 'Hey There Delilah' was just acoustic guitar, soft vocals, strings, and the tiniest bit of emo tendencies. Y'know, I think Plain White T's came along at the right time. That emo-pop punk sound was really in, particularly on the Alt format, from 2004-2007 or so. You also had bands like The Almost (the Underoath singer's side project) scoring a top 15 (maybe top 10?) hit and then bands like The Starting Line scoring an unlikely hit and bands like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus really dominating briefly. 2006-2007 in particular that sound was in. Peter, Bjorn, and John I think were part of the indie craze...garage bands like Strokes, Hives, etc. led to The Kooks and artists like Rogue Wave (anyone remember them?) and Edward Sharpe/Magnetic Zeros scoring some top 25-ish/top 20-ish hits.

On a related note, this is random but I posted this on my personal Facebook page without many responses and I thought I'd share this here:
----------------------------
Speaking as a true rock fan, people have discussed the "death of rock" or how "rock music is dead" most, perhaps all, of my life.
I think what happened over my lifetime is "rock" became too insulated and dare I say it conformist. You have to sound a certain way, use certain instruments, certain melody, etc. If you deviate too much, you're ostracized. And if you keep trying to mimic or repeat the past, at some point you'll become stuck there.
I think what rock has failed to understand is that you need to evolve if you want to capture younger/modern audiences, who of course become older and older and bring their musical tastes with them. And because rock has generally failed to do this over my lifetime, other genres have filled the void. So it's a self-inflicted wound.
I *love* rock, by the way, and believe rock will continue to exist for our lifetimes. And there are many great bands, including some of you! And while music will always be relevant, I wish "rock" were more relevant than it has become today.

I do not know a lot about Virginia Wing, but they seem to offer some interesting indietronica ideas on their Private Life album. I really liked their previous album. Ecstatic Arrow. This one is different, more experimental, and I like it too.
